That looks great Check. I would be proud to display that in my hobby room.

Thanks very much, mach!

Finished photos:

Thanks for hosting the GB, Beans.  I was very happy to participate in it.  I'll be looking in on the progress of all the other Trekkers here--if the Prophets are willing.

Peldar joy!

Thats looking great!

The decals look good dispite the issues you had with them.

R2 decals are always difficult to deal with.

I also don't remember the green panels under the saucer.

I'm looking forward to seeing the build completed.

Thanks, mc, Gamera and mach71.

Great project, mach.  I remember seeing that episode when it first aired.  It was the talk of the school bus the next day.  And that’s a tiny, little Enterprise!

And back to the refit Enterprise

First decal on the upper saucer

The Aztec decals were too long to fit the rear of the saucer, and ran into the bridge structure.  Unfortunately, they were also too short for the front of the saucer, and don’t quite reach the bridge structure.  When you trim the over-long decals, be sure to use a sharp knife.

A view of the under saucer; directions were to paint those green panels with a bright Testors color.  Too bright, I thought, so I used Colourcoats RAF Sky Type S.  Come to think of it, I don’t remember there being any green on the film Enterprise, so I don’t know that this is even correct.

And now, we pause for a brief rant about the kit’s decals.

From earlier posts in the GB, I learned some builders have had issues with the decals in various Polar Lights Star Trek kits—and I don’t doubt it for a minute.

On the one hand, the aztec decals are thick and uncooperative.  I used MicroSet; MicroSol and finally the quantum torpedo:  Walther’s Solvaset (which is known to dissolve decals with all the corrosive enthusiasm of a Horta).  No way those decals were going to settle and snuggle into the engraved panel lines (which have all the petite finesse of a Western Front trench anyway).  I soaked them repeatedly, and ended up using a full one-third of a whole bottle of Solvaset.  Rather than “melting” the decal film, the Solvaset beaded up and just sat there on top of the decal, in little bunches like nesting tribbles.

I resorted to drawing a slit with a sharp knife along each panel line, and only then did those Aztec decals remotely behave themselves.  And these tough decals actually dulled the blade!  I changed blades three times before I was done with the top and bottom of the saucer—whenever the blade started to pull at the decal, rather than slicing through it.

The warp engine decals were not much better, but the insignia decals went on more satisfactorily.

Also, were I to build this kit again, I would remove all the bumps:  like the phaser turrets and the protrusions located in four places around the circumference of the saucer.  Decals are provided for them, but the moldings are excessively large, and the decals won’t settle over them without wrinkling and distorting.  I followed the directions and used a q-tip to press the decals, but that only made the little bumps break through the decals and leave a nice white spot staring back.  I used some acrylic craft paints to touch up those spots.

But in addition to being tough and Solvaset-resistent, the decals are also prone to cracking and splitting.

So:  rant over, and I really must learn to govern my passions; they will be my undoing.

All I have left to do now is take some photos of the finished model.  And when everything is said and done, at least from a normal viewing distance, Polar Lights’ Enterprise does look pretty good and impressive, resting on its display stand.

I would have thought the Enterprise was much larger than a 104 Wink

It's nothing new at all. R2 just took the 1/2500 Enterprise and paired it with the old Lindberg 1/48 F-104 kit. They update the decals with the markings from 2 F-104s seen

episode "Tomorrow is Yesterday".

Painting the "wee bairns" was a little involving and time-consuming with masking.  I painted everything white, then had to mask it to apply duck-egg blue to the fins and front ends.

I had to use some blu-tack to mask around some of the sharp curves.

If I had it to do over, I might have done those areas first, then painted the white.

Finally got things painted, so here are the major components.

Live long and prosper.

Done.

I think the Bird of Prey decal is worth showing off.

You sir, have earned your badge. Bravo.

Thanks for the kind words, It was a long journy with thios one.

As for the photo. The last one is the classic look but the 1st one shows off the graphics better.

Either of those, your choice.

Thanks!

Outstanding work mach71!

You're the first in this group build to bring a model across the finish line. Kudos for that.

Which photo do you wish to be posted on the Wall of Fame?

Very sharp, sleek and sinister looking, mach71.  Nice work!  Particularly I like what you did with the warp engines.

Today I just snapped the pieces into place on Enterprise.  Really doesn't look too bad from a distance--maybe a couple of light-years away.

I've still got to put on the final flat coat, and put up the last construction photos.

I'm calling this done!

I abandoned the metalic color, I just could not get a smooth finish.

The grey covered well.

The base is just gloss black. I'm toying with painting some stars on it.

The kit itself is a really nice build. It's snap construction but I used glue.

The decals are a bit better than R2 has had in the past, but they still broke

in a few places. I was able to fix most of the breaks.

I'm working on the "Tomorrow is Yesterday" F-104/Enterprise kit now. Can I enter that as a 2nd build instead of the Tholian Enterprise?

Greetings, Mach71, Gamera and iSteve; and anyone else out here in the Delta Quadrant.

Thanks, Gamera.  I airbrushed parts of mine tonight with a flat coat.  Should be able to finish construction and do the final clear coat later this week.

Results, I think, were rather disappointing overall with this kit--but more on that later in the building sequence below.

Called in Dr. McCoy to assist with sprue-parts detachment.

And others of the crew to show the results of his surgery.

Here's where the first construction gremlins showed up:  the warp engines.

They look fine in the photo above, but the "snap-fit" feature of the warp engines was completely unhelpful.  The rear of the engines would not snap together tightly, so I ended up having to use glue and then clamp them together to get them near to a decent fit. Even then, huge gaps were left that require lots of filling and sanding around those little fins.

I'd also advise painting the pieces for the front of the warp engines, and then fit the engines around it.  I glued the engine halves together first, then tried to fit that front piece in--and it was a near impossible chore.

I didn't take any photos, but when I joined the upper and lower saucer sections, the "snap-fit" feature left them off-center.  One side was over the other, and one side was under the other.

I've come to the conclusion that it might work best to cut off all the "snap" features, and just align and use glue to hold the parts together.  I ended up doing that with the "neck" structure, and it seemed to work out lots better.  The problem witht the "snap" technology is that you can't test-fit the pieces.  That's because once you do snap them together, you can't get them unsnapped again without breakage.

Still to forewarn you all--nothing was as mean and hateful as all those decals; but, again, more about those later.

Live long and prosper.

Gamera

Thanks Steve, did you see the guy over on the SF forum that put lights and motors in his kit! Now that's amazing! Indifferent I feel like a cop-out the way I just painted mine.

Yes, I saw that and no, your work is great without the lights. Lights are just advertising.

CMK02: Great to see you making some progress there!

While airbrushing some other stuff over the weekend my Enterprise kept staring at me- why are you ignoring me???

Coming along very well, Beans.  Will be great to see the painting.

Like Gamera, I've been clearing some other stuff out of the way, but have been working on Enterprise.  Even got some white paint on, and finished cleaning up the last of the parts last night.

Have some pictures, too; just haven't gotten around to posting them yet.

For a snap-kit, I'm finding this a little fiddly.

Nice work there Beans on the K-7, D-7, and X-Wing (is that enough alphabet soup)?

Sorry for my lack of progress, I'd hoped getting back from vacation I'd right back at it. Then I ended up whacked by a couple of things I want to get done by the end of the year, Christmas stuff, family stuff, gee you guys know the drill...

I'm so glad we set this group build for a year. I was planning on having much more completed by this time, life does get in the way. c'est la vie, we build on when we can...

....

A couple of other projects I'm trying to complete at the same time...

Haven't posted in a while. Been working on a couple other model projects I have going. Back to my Enterprise for a while. I decided to use a scrap kit of the cutaway model and am cutting out some of the saucer rim windows and fitting them into this kit. It's working pretty well Pics later. They aren't really the correct configuration but I am able to modify everything well enough
