Steve, I reckon it was so that they could fit it in their standard box. I't a pain, because you end up eradicating the deck detail, and you have to reinstate itt, or get rid of all of it.

I don't have a P/E set for this kit. Somewhere I have an ancient Gold Medal Models railing set, but I think it was etched from stainless steel, it's much harder to user than brass. If I can find it I might at least add the railings...maybe.

I will never understand you manufactures split decks. Some, thankfully, do it where you can't see it, others, right there in the open.

I could tell that was the Sharn/Gneis just looking at the deck. Pretty pathetic huh  Like my father use to say of himself. My brain is full of uselss information taking up space for more important things.

It's the WW2 one. I think Tamiya depicted it after it's late pre-war refit. I've made a start whilst away on vacation last week.

I'll spend some time blending in the multi part deck and hull, then get on with the superstructure itself.

I figure that I'd better steam in with the old 1/700 Tamiya Gneisenau. I can't pronounce it but at least I can spell it, and maybe even build it :)

Thanks mates . I'm having a little issue with that seam although it's nothing to worrry about, I've dealt with worse. I'm out of Vallejo putty at the moment and am using Tamiya putty. The diffrene it the Tamiya is lacquer based and Vallejo, Acrylic. I'm sure someone will correct me but you know what I mean. Tamiya is more difficult to remove than Vallejo....but it holds better. I filled the little areas that needed it and started on the deck. I sprayed Tamiya deck tan first and cut masking tape strips to cover random planks. My next coat will be a slightly darker deck tan, rinse and repeat. Eventually I should end up with planks with a tonal variation. Then mask off all the wood and spray the grey.

The Bismarck was new and the turrets were repainted four, mayby five times. The weathering will be more on the streaking side caused by the salt spray with no rust.
At the point I'm portraying it, it will have been running the Denmark strait and had not yet engaged the Norfolk.

yeah same problem here! I've seen a couple of these and they end up looking really sharp. I need to stop cutting heads off the hydra tho haha

Will be watching this, keen to see how you paint. Thanks for the tips, i had seen that amount ataching the PE. And ye, rifling would have been nice.

Continuing on with this beast, after getting rid of the seams I sprayed the primer coat on the seams and the deck. I sprayed the deck tan and will start varrying the shade probably tonight.

I started on the Bruno Turret this weekend. It'll go together quick but I do have soem sugestions for those who want to built this.

First off, don't attach any PE until you have the seams filled ans sanded.

Second. There are two side pieces that attach to the side of the barbette. Once on, there's a wicked seam that's at the deck. I filled the seam with Milliput and it looks like it'll work out just fine.

Noe I need to work on the barrel seams, apply a black base to the deck, paint the deck and then add the rest of the parts. I'm hoping to show this at our local IPMS show this Oct and see if it's Nats worthy.

I really do wish Takom added some riffleing.

Ok. Nothing special, just a photo to let you all know that I am still in the game. I've tried some extra detailing which has given me headaches. But I'm nearly done.

Thanks guys. Still working on the oiul canning doing a few sections each night while i am also doing a couple of aircraft. Almost got one side done. Once i finish my 2 wingy things i plan on spending a week getting it all done and then fitting out the rest of the hull before priming. I'm hoping it comes out alright.

Bish -That sounds like an excellent strategy. Those monotonous jobs go a lot better when you break them up I would agree. I'm anxious to check out the oil caning under primer. That probably adds the most realism to a sub of any technique. Gonna look outstanding.

That is some mighty fine work Bish and Dodgy! Hopefully I’ll be getting back to the bench this week, but not sure if I can do any fine motor skill work, but I’ll give it the ole‘ college try.

You and me both. I did spend a few days on HMS Trafalgar once, but we were not out in the mid Atlantic and not being depth charged. The guys in these U-Boats really ha it tough.

Nice work Bish! Those big boats take time but the efforts wil pay off BIG TIME, Yea, the oil canning takes quite a bit of time. It took three weeks to do the same thing to my type IV. It always amazed me that while those kits are big they're the same scale as a 1/72 aircraft or tank....and that Yamato and Bruno turret I have.

Thanks dodgy. I'll be useing colourcoats enamels for the main colours. Not sure if they do any that suit WW1 boats.
