Star Trek federation tribute build
Posted by Cpt.Sponder on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 1:22 PM

Hey all,

this will be a group build to pay tribute to you're favo startrek actor!

the rules:

1. federation ships only (canon or not)

2. any scale, any era.

3. Ships name should be tributed to you're own favorite startrek actor, so if you like cpt.picard, name the ship USS Steward, or for seven of nine, USS Ryan, etc. you get the idea.. Registry numbers should be based on the birthdays of the actor.

subsection 3.1: if for whatever reason you dont want to pay tribute to the cast, thats cool too :) **yup chris, this one is for you baby!!

4. have fun!!

Start: whenever you're ready!! ENGAGE!

End: 1/06/07

If you like the idea, and want to enter this build, please name the shipclass you want to build, and, it's name and registry number. (and maybe the reason you chose the actor/actress you did..)

Well, I figured I should be posting over here, so here is where I am at..

The phaser strips and the escape pods are done!..

I am not into building ships other than the Enterprise. So I am going to be boring on this one, and call this one the (wait for it)......................................Enterprise D..

Almost a week into it, and this is where I am at!

Saucer and secondary hull are all but complete.. I now have to do the deflector dish and then will begin with the decals.. The warp engines are being done seperately, and so I am still working on those aswell...

ps. I just noticed I missed one escape pod at the front.. I have since finished doing it, and I must say, that even though I will enjoy looking at the end result. This will definately be the last Enterprise D that I will ever build.. There are too many windows, too many escape pods.. But all in all it will make it stand out once done.. So I will just keep plugging along..

Dont mind me people!.. Happy to keep this thread going all by myself!! Although I would love to see some more participation find its way in and join in on this build.. I plan on doing a few builds. So dont hold back guys....

Here is another update, and the more I do on the this, the more I know I have a long way to go..

Anyways, I finished doing the aztec on the whole ship, and have done alot of detail work with windows and so forth. But I decided that I wanted to put it on a base to get an idea as to how she will turn out.. I will say that I placed the warp engines on it, but they have not been azteced or detailed so they look pretty plain at the momment..

I have also done the deflector.. I originally did it blue with red, but it looked a little strange, so I decided on a totally blue dish...

Some of the decalling for the saucer has been done, but I still have a few that have to go on, so it isnt finished either.

I didnt light this kit, but I wanted to try and make the deflector look like it was lit to give it some life.. It looks like I splashed paint all over it, but dont worry, its just the flash from the camera.

Next to my 1/32 WW II Australian Mustang.

Alot of detail has gone into the saucer, but I still have to detail the main shuttle hanger door, aswell as the smaller 2 doors on the back of the neck.

Side shot on the base that will be used to mount it on..

chris, did you do anything about the "roughness" on the bottom of the saucer by the neck? I've had a few of these and have noticed it kinda has that crackly spraypaint look. also on the deflector dish, I have found the E-D's to be the most difficult to replicate
I am a man, But I can change. If I have to....I guess...

Hi mate.. Do you mean where the saucer meets with the neck?.. If so, no I didnt get anything like that. mainly because I usually only paint with flat acrylics.. I just went back and had a look at that side shot that I took, I think its the last one, and the neck does look a bit rough.. But that is just all the windows. A little hard to see.. Its the one thing I hate about the E-D.. All the windows are huge on it, but the neck has a million tiny ones that look out of place with the rest of the ship..

As for the deflector. I masked everything off nice and tidy, and I originally did the blue dish with the red rings. Problem was, that it looked like crap. So I ended up using Tamiya Sky Blue and a very light mix of white and sky blue to give it the glowing effect on the other rings..  Not sure what you think, But I think it turned out fine as it wont be lit..

Against the better judgement of more knowlegdable people I decided to stick with minature christmas ligths for lighting my Intrepid. So here's the pic.

I know, it's a mess, I should have used a LED. But I'm doing this build cheap, the kit has cost me € 5 at the Nationals and the lights where € 1,-.....

Well, if and when it is finished, people start gathering around it and singing Xmas carrols. Then dont come running to us!!. he he he

Actually nothing wrong with your idea.. I would just check how much heat they radiate.. My first lighted kit when I was a kid was the original Millennium Falcon. And the light system for that thing was nothing more then what appeared to be xmas lights..  Look forward to seeing more!..

I have checked how mucht heat the lamps generate. I turned them on for an quarter of an hour and even after that period they where not to hot to touch. As an extra security, the alumium foil should proted againtst the little heat that the ligths make.

In have now closed the hull. The fit was reasonable but I stil needed a lot of tape to get it al to fit properly during drying. I also started on the nacelles.

I also thought of a name, the USS Crosby....

You sure can old mate.. What do have in mind?....

As for me, I am nearly finished my E-D and TOS-E's.. So I am going to add my AMT USS Reliant to this build, and while I am at it, I may just finish my PL Refit for this group aswell!

Remco.. Looks like you are getting somewhere with that Voyager.. Did you get a chance to take a look at my friends Voyager at that link I suggested?

Cpt. Sponder will have the final say, I guess, but I don't see a problem with a shuttle.  The rules only say "Federation Ship", after all.  What type were you thinking of building?

 Cpt.Sponder wrote:

And likely unprimered!  I can't find any primer over here.  Might have to check w/our Sheet Metal folks and see what I can come up with. Barring that, maybe I'll see if I can bug the vehicle maintenance folks...

Regardless, I'm building the Cozmo Heavy Industries TOS Federation-class Dreadnought in 1/2500 scale.  Possibly my PNT Models Avenger-class Heavy Frigate, as well.  It needs a little work, tho, as it's a "second" casting.

Lookin' good, thus far.  Glad to hear that the Christmas Lights aren't generating much heat.  I know that the older ones here in The States used to give off too much heat for such use, but the newer stuff they've released the last several years are more like LED's in regards to how much heat they generate.

Nice choice on the name, too.  I really like the movies and TV Shows I've seen her in.  What's the registry going to be?

I was thinking about the DS9 Runabout.

Does anyone know of a Good site that has unusual Star Trek kits ?

Thanks all

joey, great to see you joining in.. Will the E-C be the AMT one?.. Look forward to seeing how it comes along..

Bud.. I have a feeling you will be a very busy man.. As for the decals.. If you have the patients, atleast you will be able to mask off and spray on the red starfleet markings, but how you go about doing the registry numbers I dont know.. Maybe a stencil of some sort that you can spray through and touchup with a brush?

As for me.. Although I am still building the TOS and E-D. I have decided that I will keep my AMT Reliant, and keep it for this build.. But as I am still doing the other two.. Atleast some of you guys will get a bit of a head start on me!Blush [:I]

The registry? haven't thought of that, yet.

Here are some more progress pics:

Since the pieces where a bit warped I had to add some strip styrene to keep the whole together.

Another pic of a rather bad fitting piece...

I know but that's something I have to work for. See these kit are EASY to build and paint, the challenge will be in the decals Big Smile [:D]

Unfortunately, I can't view PhotoBucket from here at The Job.  I've got to wait 'til I get off and go over to our Cyber Cafe.  What are these?  Are they the little TOS ships from Starline 2200 that have been used for the StarFleet Battles game?  If so, I know where you might be able to get decals.  A fella I know named Jay Chladek used to make them and I think still does, tho I'm not for sure.  His website is: http://members.aol.com/JMChladek/index.html  Specifically, this page: http://members.aol.com/JMChladek/decal.html

Hope that helps.  I shot him a PM thru a forum that I know he frequents, so hopefully can get you a response that route if he fails to answer any email you send him.  Regardless, I've heard good things about the decals that he was producing for a while there.

Obviously, if they're not the little TOS ships, then disregard.

I don't see why not.

Update on my progress.  I've got the kit completly cleaned up and washed down.  Glued the nacelles together and started putting the gaps.  That's it, tho.  I'll try and get some pics taken so that I can at least post them at some point in the future.

Well Captain.. Another member made a point of telling me that in the last ST Group build they had 14 or something sign up, and well, it didnt go very far.. Not harping, but........................

I honestly do hope we get some more interest, but if it hasnt come yet...  And I know that I sound like the doom and gloom guy. But I only say it, because I think its a great idea and would also like to see more people join up.. But if they dont, then it does become a little dissapointing is all...

But I still have my Reliant waiting in the wings!

The number of participants shouldn't really set the tone of success or not, IMO.  Strong participation, however, should.  It seems we've got some fairly decent participation going on, thus far.  Especially with a couple of folks choosing multiple models to build for this particular GB.

And speaking of...  I'd like to enter two other 1/2500 scale models.  I have a kit of a modified version of a FASA Star Trek RPG design for the Andor I'm going to start cleaning up a bit later this morning and have a PNT Models Avenger-class heavy frigate (think Reliant) that I'm giong to start on after that.  I will do my best to have them both assembled and ready for primering and painting when I get back to Stateside along w/the Federation DN I'm already listed for.

and sure Dubau: a nice shuttle is ok too!! :) allthough the drawings / pics of the ships look great too!! you have any class names though?

I'm not Dubau, but I can sorta help, as I can see three of the four images right now.  The first is the Constitution-class heavy cruiser, the next is the Federation-class dreadnought, the third is most likely the Ptolemy-class transport/tug and the fourth is the Saladin/Hermes Destroyer/Scout (minor differences between the two).  All are from the Franz Joseph Designs "Star Fleet Technical Manual", first published in 1975 (I think it was).

also since this GB is to pay tribute to youre favo actors, you allready thought about the names? (means custum decals!!:D )

Do we have a firm closing date, yet?  Give us maybe four to six months, please?  That way I can prolly have a couple different models finished when I leave here, just requiring painting and decaling when I get home.   Please? Smile [:)]

Have a GREAT day

Forgot to post this yesterday, but I got a response back from Jay:

Well, I've somewhat gone away from doing those since I can't really guarantee the quality of them as much anymore with the amount of work needed. I like to offer as much as possible a turn key product and it seems like the current batches of ALPS cartridges don't do the fine stuff quite as well like they used to. I have ways around it by using the multi-pass black option, but then when I try to clearcoat with Micrscale decal film, the letters like to float off the sheet like alphabet soup. I still may go back to doing them one of these days, but since ALPS is stopping support on the printers, I would like to ration what I have for my own uses (as long as I can get cartridges anyway).

There have been a couple other producers of markings in this scale that have popped up to take up the slack and in some cases they are doing things that are better then what I had done. The future is never set though, so who knows what will happen in the not too distant future.

I inquired as to who he might know of whom is producing decals for that scale, but have not received a response back.

Does anyone know where I can get some Decals for the 1/3788 scale ships ? Someone gave me a web site before of a guy that use to make them. I have email him 2 or 3 times now and nothing. So if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Thanks all

If you're referring to the links above in this page of the thread, I think I might have given it to you previously, too.  That's the same guy to whom I have a request in for who else he might know to be producing these decals.

I'll LYK what I find out.
