Just one more thing i forgot to add to my last post...
If the adhesive on masking tape seems a little too much i stick it to the kitchen bench and rip it off real quik,do this a few times and the tape loses alot of it's stick....

Snowy, I'm glad someone else is also behind the Eight Ball [8] for the GBWink [;)]
Time is a premium, between work, new baby, missuss, parents, volleyball, there just isn't enough time in the day, or night for that matter.

j.s., thanks for the advise on the Sabre. I kinda figured it would be a little on the Censored [censored] side of things, being a conversion and all.
Thankfully I have alot of styrene stock floating around to fill the gapsSmile [:)]

Didnt even think of the kitchen bench idea for the tape.Dunce [D)]
Thats why I went for the cheap stuff.
I figured that if it has trouble sticking to itself, then my painted model should be safe as housesSmile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Hi guys,

I know there is a message at the top of this page specificly say not to talk about this here but I think I will get more and more useful replies here.

Do you know where I an get a fine detail airbrush for under $100 if possible, what brands should I look at?

OK.

Firstly, I agree 100% on the 40mm Tamiya tape. It buggered up the invasion stripes on my P-47 recently, so off to my daughters craft box it goes. The guys on Painting and airbrushing forum seem to like either 3M fine line blue tape, so I might give that a whirl.

As for the GB, I only just picked up my Spitty Mk.VIII yesterday, So I am going to try and start this weekend, but I'm minding the kids whilst the wife is away so I don't like my chances. Sad [:(]

Cheers

G'day folk's,

The 40mm Tamiya tape is not designed to be used on plastic, it's Tamiya's tape for their Polycarb paint range for R/C car body shells, acrylic or enamel paints can bleed threw it and underneath.

Their 6/10/18mm masking tape is designed to work with plastic and either acrylic or enamel paints, If you want to make masks for models get some wax proof paper and 10mm masking tape, the paint wont penetrate the wax paper, most good supermarket have this on the shelf.

Ok all you fellas agree not to use the 40mm Tamiya tape so i'll give it a miss.
Darson mentioned blue tape in his last post and i have this blue flexible tape i bought from an Auto paint shop, spraypainters use it to mask pinstripes over the wheel arches and to mask around tail lights ect, basically the tape goes around corners without creasing in the middle,i use it for masking fueselage bands and around the wingroots if the fueselage colour is different to the wing colour, such as on many Luftwaffe A/C.
The tape does have it's flexing limitations, though cutting it down the middle can give a little more flex.
The bad thing is the $ amount i got the cheap one at $16 a roll..
BTW it has avery low tac so it never pulls paint off..

HI Guys,

Another Aussie joining the forum, have been trawling the ARC boards for a while getting used to this discussion thing! Now I seem to spend the time I had to build models checking the forums for the good gos.

I am in Canberra (northern suburbs), are the any other Canberrans other than Snowy out there? Wayne knows me from his time here in Canberra. My main interestes are airliners and airliners in military markings. Have posted some pictures of my work over in the Aussie GB. I also have a few fighters and the like in the stash, and since the Army is getting Abrams I have one of those too.

At the moment I have a few projects on the go and would like to get at least one of them finished before the end of the group build. Look forward to seeing you on the board!

Just noticed the discussion on the 40mm Tamiya tape. I use it all the time! Have a lot of surface area to cover when masking up airliners. Though what I do is to out line the area I am masking with the thinner stuff, 10 or 8mm and then fill the large areas with the 40mm stuff. Haven't had any bleed though problems this way.

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] Aussie 747!!

Good to see another Aussie here, as always.
Couple of footnotes to be wary of.

Don't mention cats around j.s., he has a 'thing' about them, probably started when he was at kindy, and one stole his lunch money.
He aint never been the same since.Tongue [:P]Smile [:)]Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

The blue tape is apparently painters tape by trade, used for interior painting to mask off cornices etc, and has a high tack adhesive.
The auto spray painters tape is roughly the same thing, but in a low tack form so as not to damage duco layers, and especially to be kind to pearl finishes.

I also hadn't even thought of the spray painters tape.
I really gotta stop working such long hours. It's cutting into my hobby research time!

Glad to see another Aussie join us.

On the Tamiya 40mm tape, it wasn't bleed through that I had the problem with, it was paint lift off.

I like your idea with the Abrams; I have been toying with the idea to build an Aussie M1A1 myself since the announcement was made.

Cheers

Hi Roosta,

Just my My 2 cents [2c] worth but in answer to your question about airbrushes, take a look at

http://www.dixieart.com/Airbrushes.html

They are in the US but their prices are very good. I dealt with them myself to purchase my new Iwate ab and had no problems at all.

IMHO, brands you should look at are:
Iwata (I love mine)
Badger
Passche
Thayer and Chandler

There are models there to suit every budget, but have a look at the Iwata Revolution CR for about $60 USD (you have to add postage of course).

A kit that caught my eye at the LHS today was Hasegawa's "RAAF Mosquito". How good is Hasegawa's Mossy kit??? I think it was 1/48 (the kit was about $43) but to be honest I didn't check the scale just looked at the box art, it looked like a natural metal bird, Mark VI I think. Has anyone built this kit? I also noticed they have released a P51K in RAAF markings. I think the box says "United Nations Countries" or something to that effect with decals for Australia, South Africa, etc. I haven't built Hasegawa's P51 so I'm tempted, Ive heard they're good. Don't know anything about the Mossy kit, but it warms the heart to see some Aussie versions being offered OOB.

Cheers.......Snowy

I'm with you on the Aussie OOB thing Snowy, just isn't enough of them around, without having to look REALLY hard.
I received an email about the Hasegawa P51 just the other day, and am still deep in thought as to whether I will purchase it right now, or wait and see if any reviews come forward about this model.
Mostly curious whether it is a new tooling, or the same ol' P51 with RAAF etc decals stuffed in the box.

Not having a go at manufacturers, but there are other countries that flew in the wars other than Britain, USA, Germany and Japan.
So hows about some more offerings.
Or at the very least, after market decal kits and the like.

The Hasegawa RAAF Mosquito is 72 scale, the 72 Tamiya is a much better kit for a, 72 scale bird.

And the pics of the CA27 will go into the mail this week.

I just took a look on Hannants website at the 1/48 F-86 PE sets. Eduard do two for the F-86 D, and they also do two fully painted ones for the F-86 F, and two unpainted for the F, one each for the Hasegawa and Academy models. The one for the Hasegawa model is cat. no. EDFE 145, and is listed as half the price of the one for the Academy model, so I guess the Hasegawa must be a better kit to start with! Hope that helps Tweety

Hi all,

Eduard do a couple of photo etch sets for the Hasegawa F-86, a small set no 4145 (USD$5.47), a colour more extensive set no 4236 (USD$13.47) and a bigger set again also colour no 49236 (USD$22.47).

If you guys are looking for an F-86F-30 Cockpit Set, then take a look the resin one from True Details no 49010 (USD$8.96). I have used their stuff before and it is first class and as an added plus (for me anyway), you don't have to mess around trying to fold and glue sub-microscopic pieces of metal.

BTW, all the prices and item numbers were taken from www.squadron.com

Cheers

There you go Tweets Question [?]answered...........
I figured if i'm going to go to all the trouble of converting the Hasegawa F86 into a CAC Sabre i might as well go all the way and add as much detail as possible......
Unfortunatly this means i'll have to pull out of the Sabre GB cause theres no way i can finish such a big job in the GB time frameSigh [sigh]unless i buy a 72nd scale Sabre and do it in Luftwaffe markings or Canadian......J.S
BTW looking forward to the pics arriving, one can never have enough reference material.

Good replies people, but I still have my Sabre on backorder, and hope fully will be here in the next 2 weeks.
Hopefully!!!!!!!!!!

J.S., there are a couple of movie files showing the front wheel carriage, and one of the airbrakes, not the best quality, but didgital cameras are like that.
Also a picture of the training simulator used to train pilots to fly the CA27.

So old it's spooky, and thank God technology has come a long way since then!
