Aussie Modellers

Anyone know if the brand AOSHIMA is available here in Australia?
I bought one a few years ago and have never seen it since.
Great kit too,,,good detail and finish and the accuracy was excellent.

I have the Aerofax Convair B-58 Hustler book by Jay Miller.

It has a photo of a Convair promotional model of a natural metal B-58 in Australian markings, carrying 16 iron bombs. Apparently Convair tried to sell a stripped version of the Hustler to the RAAF around 1959-60, emphasising the aircrafts ability to carry bombs externally (rather than the nuclear weapon which this beasty was designed for).

Hello everyone,
My name is Steven and I have just joined the forums. I am from Warrnambool on the south-west Victorian coast. I have been modelling for 10 years and I like to build 1/72 WW2 aircraft of the major powers, 1/32 WW2 fighters and occassionally an AFV, submarine, figure or car. Current projects include a 1/48 RM P-61 Black Widow, Dragon 1/35 Panther command tank, 1/16 German Grenadier and a replica of my brother's car, a Tamiya 1/24 Nissan Skyline GTS25t. Basically I like to model a bit of everything, my only trouble is finding space for them all and my Aztek airbrush which constantly spits...:-)

Sushi, MM Gloss Coat is an excellent base and cover for your decals. I used both the Gloss & Dull Coats for ages without any probs. The Dull Coat is particularly nice in that it gives a dead flat finish. The only reason I use Pollyscale now is that it is water based acrylic that is less trouble to handle than the lacquer based Dull & Gloss coats.

John great idea , but at the moment I have zero time for another GB at the moment. If you wanted to make the dates say Nov 05 - Mar 06 then I would be a definite starter.

Rootsa, really sorry I forgot all about the pricing info I was going to get you. Here is the breakdown of my IWATA from DixieArt.

HPCS + extra bits : $ 142.99
Shipping : $ 35.40 (UPS)
Grand Total : $ 178.39

That equals about $254 AUS which from memory was about $100 cheaper than I could get it for in the shops here.

Has anyone got a recommendation for a 1/48 or 1/32 Camel? I've been discovering all sorts of interesting stuff about my grandfather who flew in 4Sq AFC & even found photos of him in various books, as well as his aircraft #. Next step is to model it although I've yet to see a colour illustration of a 4Sq Camel. That's him in the back row, 2nd from the left:

Speaking of Stanbridges in Perth. I was told that J&B Models, an Perth based Australia wide distributor are ceasing to import Aeromaster/Eagle Strike and 2Bobs decals. Apparently there is not enough range and not enough market anymore.

Seems to be an impact already as Stanbridges do not have much of the above left.

There has been some huge reshuffle in the distribution industry in Oz of late. If you search for 'sale' on the Snowy Mts site you get notices for a dozen lines they're no longer distributing. So much for the free trade agreement.

I imagine that Snowy gets most it it's lines from J&B asthey are Australia wide distributors. I got this from the horses mouth so to speak.

Well, it will be a mail/internet order now with the downside being that the shops will suffer.

Does anyone know if all RAAF aircraft in WWII wore squadron codes?
I want to model P40E A29-69 which crashed in '42. I have emailed the pilots grandson who I think has photos of the aircraft although I'm not sure that the email address I have for him is current.

I have so far been unable to find any information on what marking the aircraft would have had and where it wad them including what camoflage it wore.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Roosta, do you know where it went down. There were > 1,000 used by the RAAF. I think there were three basic schemes, the Africa trop camo, the new Guinea camo which is foliage-green & earth-brown (like the Boomerang below), and the all/almost all foliage greens which were later in the war. Additionally some were left as painted by the factory in the US, ie US schemes.

Flying Officer Montague David Ellerton (568), aged 23 years, was killed on 27th or 28th April 1942, when the wing tip of his Kittyhawk, A29-69, hit a sand dune and his Kittyhawk flipped over while attempting to land on a beach about 50 kms north west of Cooktown. It ended up on a beach south of Murdoch Point, near some rocky ledges.

Ellerton was attempting to give assistance to the pilot of a USAAF P-39 Airacobra #41-7210 flown by Lt. William McGovern of the 35th Fighter Squadron of the 8th Fighter Group, USAAF. This Airacobra was one of the eleven P-39 Airacobras which crashed on 26 April 1942. The wreck of Ellerton's Kittyhawk ended up about 400 yards from the crashed Airacobra.

Flying Officer Montague David Ellerton was on his way to Port Moresby in New Guinea and then Milne Bay to join 75 Squadron RAAF.

Ok, I'm going to have a bit of a rant here (so what else is new!)
And I know it isn't modelling related, but it is a close topic for me, and kinda curious on other peoples views.

On the eve of ANZAC DAY, one of the most important events in Australian history, where Australia and New Zealand landed on the beaches of Gallipoli (in the wrong place! Onya England), I have just had the misfortune to see on the tele what has been done to ANZAC Cove.


What kind of moronic government would condone someone slapping down a few 100 odd metres of black top on what has to be considered one of the most sacred sites in Australian history!!
I am nothing short of furious and disgusted

So far this year we have had to tolerate some Uni tossers from OUTSIDE of Australia vandalising our memorials, now John (follow like a lost puppy) Howard and his cohorts agree to ANZAC Cove being 'modernised'!!!

Then they have the aggets to release letters stating that the roads etc have been laid in the wrong place!!
They must think we're idiots.

Again I apologise guys, but this makes my blood boil.

Understand what you say and am just as horrified (I lost a great Uncle at Gallipoli), but the Turks did the design works and construction of the car park area. Remember that Gallipoli Cove is supposedly just as sacred to them as it is us. (86,000 Turkish dead).

Perhaps the only way would have been to allow an Australian Engineering firm to design and construct the road and carpark. Enviromental and cultural considerations are a required part of the design process. I know this as Civil Engineering is my profession.

As it stands, even if the Australian Government asked the Turkish Government to upgrade access, we have no right to demand to be part of the design process or get involved unless asked to be part of the process.

Perhaps if that offer had been made, things might have been different. Unfortunately it has not been and enviromental/cultural considerations have not been number one proirity. This appears to be a stark contrast to the French, even with their plans to extend an airport over a war graves cemetary.

I have to blame the Turkish Government on this issue, even if Anzac Cove is as important to them as it is to us. Bad engineering decisions caused this, not the Aust. Government.

Le's hope that the area can be made good and those disturbed given proper and dignified treatment.

I mainly model trains (Australian) but have also branched off into R/C tanks in 1/16 scale with the building of a Leopard AS1 and now also a Leopard 2A6 (Aussie yeah I know we won't ever have them)
