Thanks Everyone.

Glad to see you back Joe, nice haul.

The DVII, Alaska and Cat are on me list,  especially the D version of the Cat

These were very high on my wishlist as well. Although it still cost a chunk of change, each one was decent deal and hard to pass up.

First and foremost, glad you are back to normal operating speed. Sorry to hear about your surgery and mom’s fall but things turned out ok. She sounds like a very strong lady at 92. My mom was like that too but sadly passed away a few years ago also in her 90’s.

That is quite a nice long list of goodies that just happened to land on you hands specially the Tamiya Tomcat. I have built several Revell/Monograms and Hasegawas but the Tamiya one is by far the easiest and best fitting of the cats I’ve built.

Just got Tamiya's F-14A Tomcat 1/48. Looks to be a great kit.

Good on ya! I just recently got my hands on one and, indeed, it is a gorgeous looking kit.

Hey Gang. Hard to believe that it has been since July that I've been able to get back here and get caught up. Life simply dropped some unexpected curve balls on me that have taken me away from keeping up on here. I had foot surgery back in early Sept. that had me laid up for a while and as soon as I was up and walking normal my mother broke her hip which required my attention for a good while. She is doing awesome now. Back up and running amock like normal. Not bad for a lady at 92 yrs. old. So, now I'm able to refocus on the forum and hopefully some building. Yet, I have still managed to add admirably to my stash.Big SmileBig Smile

Let me start by saying that I am immensely impressed with all the different kits everyone has accumulated. There are some really stunning acquisitions. i regret that I have not been able acknowledge each one individually.

So, let me start with by going back to my mom's hip injury. She had to go to Grand Junction, Co. for surgery a 100 miles away. I accompanied her and we were there for 3 days. As such, this gave me the opportunity to go to my favorite LHS and Hobby Lobby. not necessarily good on the wallet. Here is what I picked up at The Hobby Hut:

I also went to the hotel computer and printed off some Hobby Lobby 40% coupons and scored mightly:

Then there is the slew of kits I scored via ebay and FB auctions:

I have been dying to get this kit for quite some time. Got it from a China seller for $80.00:

Then I scored another wishlist kit through auction for $50.00:

Got these as a set at auction for $20.00! Also included a box of IJN bonus sprues.

Other additions picked for rather reasonable $$:

In closing, I am one happy camper! Thanks for having a look.

So..... I got this email from Culttvman and they had this flash sale on Iron Man kits from Dragon.  Now two of these kits look like they have options for lighting them up.  Does anyone know of any light kits or if Dragon sells them?  I looked on the Dragon web-site and didn't find anything.  I briefly googled it and really didn't find anything there either.  Any info would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Actually wiring up LEDs and fiber optic cables aren't all that hard to do. Look around the internet and you'll find a lot of advice on how to do it. I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't even some YouTube videos on it. Most of it will be on lighting Star Trek and Wars type ships but you should be able to apply the same techniques to a figure.

The biggest issue is you'll probably have to order everything. In the good old days you could just drop by Radio Shack to get the parts.

PS: You might check some LED Jack O'Lantern lighting kits after Halloween. Tear them apart and you'll have most of the parts you need.

Good ole Radio Shack!

I didn't try Youtube...and great advice on getting after Halloween stuff!  Thanks!

Hi,

Although I really shouldn't be spending money on new kits right now, the other day I saw this Airfix model of the Type 45 Destroyer for what looked like a pretty good price, so I picked it up ...

PF

Nice, i have been meaning to pick one of those up. Just got to find it for a decent price.

Hi,

I got mine for $29 (plus shipping) from Free Time Hobby's close out sale, but have since seen it on eBay for about $26 (plus shipping).

I have to admit that I am intrigued by theway Airfix has tooled this kit, with the main decking piece covering several decks but with the external vertical surfaces made to glue on separately.  It reminds me a little of some of the old Renwal kits that were molded similarly (like the USS Farragut).  Though on those kits the bottom of the hull was molded separately with tabs and slots arranged so that you could glue all the pieces together from the inside (to hide and glue lines or marks) and then seal the model up later.

12

Anyway, for this Airfix kit, it looks like it might give me the ability to prepaint at least part of the superstructure side pieces, before attaching them to the deck section, so that I can get a clean delineation between the two.  Though, I will probably still have to paint (or at least clean up) the seems where two vertical pieces come together after attaching them, so that I can do a little sanding and filling if necessary.

Overall though it looks like it will be a fun and interesting build. Big Smile

PF

PS.  This is actually only me 4th 1/350 scale ship to buy.  I have a Kniaz Suvarov Pre-Dreadnought, a Chinese Type 054A frigate, and just recently bouth a Type 23 frigate, though I haven't started any of them yet, because I was n't sure if I was ready yet to try and tackle them because they seem so detailed.  However, the tooling of this Type 45 Airfix kit has got me thinking that (once I finish a couple group builds that I am in) this might be the 1st of my 1/350 scale ships that I start Stick out tongue

Thats a good price, i think the best i have seen it on e-bay is £30, but that was a while ago. None of the shops seem to have it. I keep checking e-bay and the next time i find one at a good price i plan to grab it.

My Trafalgar is my first 350 kit and the only other one i have is the Bismarck. But the daring looks like a nice kit for novice ship buildiers. I have seen one built up and i will be looking forwrad to seeing your build.

PF, when you get around to start it, jump in on the Ships of the British Flag GB I'm running. It runs until 2020 and it looks like a great entry.

P.S. I have that one on my wishlist as well.

I recently picked up at a hobby shop 2 interesting kits. the first is a rare-planes 1/72 vacuform XFM Airacuda (expect a new WIP thread on here sometime, I have never built a vac kit, and will be asking questions), and a M News (never heard of this company, must have been a small company in the 90s that didn't last too long) 1/72 P-51H, that appears to be a short run kit. picked both up in a buy one, get one free sale for $15... score!

JohnnyK: Looking forward to seeing how that P-38 comes together. I like the Hasegawa kit but that does look it the alignment will work a great deal better.

SP: Love that M48, nice to see it getting a lot of love recently with new kits from Dragon and others.

Anyway, I decided to take the plunge, my first two Meng Toons kits. They've got a M5 Stuart on the way too!

Not here yet, next week.....  Ordered out the Tamiya F4F-4 and the Squadron F6F-5 for our club's next group build----1/48 WWII radial engine single seat fighter.  Also picked up the Eduard PE set for the Wildcat along with a set of Starfighter decals.  Now to decide if I want to do it as Thatch's bird or a VF-6 off Enterprise.  The entire decal set is for Midway.

Also the club is hosting a swap meet tomorrow, so will see what I can pick up there, much to my lady's displeasure.

That is supposed to be a nice kit Johnny! It has a few areas to be addressed, but easily done. And the biggest gripe on P-38 kits, the alignment, is covered.

Well, it pays off to squirrel away cash in your wallet for a rainy day... the other day a LHS got a new release in stock and had it priced most attractively and time wise fortuitously! (Shout out to Brookhurst Hobbies!!!)

So I went and picked this beauty up!

I just picked up an easy to assemble P-38L from HobbyBoss.

The two sides of the fuselage are nicely packaged in a plastic bag. Check out the  foam padding. Unlike most P-38 models, this one has the booms and tail wing and main wing all attached to the center fuselage tub. This should prevent the alaignment problem with the booms on other manufacturer's kits. This kit has recessed panel lines and no raised rivets like on the Revell kit. And yes, I intend to finish this in Bare Metal Foil.

Your comments and questions are always welcome.
