Hey everyone! I too got these emails. It turns out it was a glitch in Kalmbach's email service provider. Us at FSM weren't even aware of the issue until this morning and I'm glad to see it has been resolved.

Super sorry about the random emails, you can just ignore all of those.

No worries.  I ignore 90% of my email anyway.  Thanks for the follow up.

And thanks for this free service you're providing.  Model railroader forum too.

I think this is not a big deal. I got three total, I spam tagged them, I expect I'll never get more.

Sorry, for those who believe  (in my opion only) that that comments expressed here where "just about a couple of emails", unfortunately it is not.

I routinely receive, what I can describe as spam from this publisher with no obvious  means via my  account with said publisher to deactivate anything other than FSM communication, which has been setup like this for years.

I have had "other" events recently that took more time then needed to fix a problems with the publisher, which where eventually sorted.

If the purpose behind this type of marketing is an attempt to increase revenue, then pherhaps charge a low rate for use of this fourum on an annual basis.

My .0005 cents worth

I just got an email from Kalmbach admitting they had a glitch that caused the emails to go out and an apology. It's great they owned up to the error but when it comes to them and technology there seems to be a sense that it's the amateur hour.

"Thank you for registering" is 180 degrees from the "Thank you for subscribing" that I've been reading all the complaints about.

I'm confused, did the email in question state "subscribing" or "registering"? (I didn't get the email)

Registering with a link to subscribe. Yes, big differance.

Not really, in security terms.  Either one could have been a sign that an account was compromised.

It's good that it turned out to be an error.

But it wasn't "much ado about nothing", either.  When we receive emails suggesting that we did something that we know we didn't do, it is natural to suspect that there has been a hack, that our online identities have been compromised.

I just would have put it in the Ready Room, instead of General Modeling Discussion Wink

The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen.

My actual point was about being spammed, not recieving my digital subscriptions and the customer comes last.

My origial post;

"One would have thought in an age of continued contraction of the print media sector, let alone this hobby we all very much enjoy, customer satisfaction would be priority no. 1.

But alias, you have hit the nail on the head, the all mighty dollar wins out again.

And so, another paying subscriber I am, no longer."

And it is not 1 or 2 emails, but dozens.

My apologies, there was no mention in your post about "dozens" of emails.  However, all that indicates to me is that it was obviously a glitch of some kind.

I subscribe to FSM and Scale Auto. I also subscribe to a car magazine and three audio magazines. I enjoy reading print on paper much better than reading a digital magazine.

Your comments and questions are always welcome.

Couldn't have said it any better. Their subscription offers I get in the mail is ridiculous. $30 for 1 year? Hell, I can get Motor Trend or Car & Driver for $6 per year each....

Even Hot Rod & Car Craft magazine sibscription charges half of what FSM charges.

Only Time magazine charges $30... for 52 weeks, not per month.

Go look at how many magazines charges for their yearly subscriptions. Even their 2 year subscriptions are cheaper then FSM's yearly subscriptions. This shows how greedy FSM has become.

um..,they are a business.  Of course the almighty dollar wins.  They are in this business to make money.

it baffles me that people complain about the price of the magazine.  30 bucks for 6 issues.  5 bucks an issue.  Cost of a bottle of paint or 2.  if you haven't noticed, magazines aren’t exactly flourishing anymore.  You know why your other magazines are so cheap?  Because they are desparately trying to stay in business.

And if this magazine folds because everyone refuses to buy it because of a spamming glitch, then guess what?  this forum will fold.

My point is that this is a pretty niche hobby nowadays.  This magazine and the other few like it need our support.  Rather than nitpick and complain, how about we offer suggestions and support?  How about we stop freaking out about 1 or 2 spam emails?  Give your feedback, instead of making bold proclamations about stopping buying their magazine.

Everyone laments about this hobby possibly dying.  Let’s do our best to keep it alive by supporting the few dedicated magazines and companies that support this hobby and give us a nice break from the sometimes Ugly world around us.

Kalmbach sent me e-mails asking me if I wanted to subscribe to: Scale Auto, Trains and American Snowmobile. That's a strange combo of magazines.

Your comments and questions are always welcome.

Iwould be ok with just deleting the emails (I actually didn't, I archived them for date/time stamps).

It's the language of "thank you for registering" as if an action was taken without my permission and/or input.  I am very much not ok with that.

Bad part is that it's linked back to an old, pass-through, mail account I have, so, I don't have a way to determine if I have a subscription or not.  None of my linked accounts shows financial activity, so, that's generally good.

It's very annoying, and the lack of transparency does not help matters in the slightest.  Bad things happen in the dark; you need sunlight to see them.

Hopefully, Kalmbach will move to a more secure login system.

I'm just guessing,

Thats because FSM doesn't have the high profile or circulation of those other magazines. No high profile advertisers in FSM.Those other popular magazines are practically paid for by their advertisers.FSM is probably mostly supported by the subscribers.Just the way it is with a small limited interest magazine, there are not many modelers in the world, much less who subscribe to FSM.It's probably a miracle that they are still putting out a magazine.

I stopped subscribing a year ago, really enjoyed it,but for the price, there wasnt anything I couldnt research on the net for free.

And sad to say,I could always thumb thru it for as long as I wanted at Barnes and Noble

I believe Kalmbach was compromised. Just delete the emails, and if you get more, report it to Kalmbach tech support.

I fail to understand the logic behind not subscribing because of this. It won't rectify the issue. I got 2 emails, a simple click deleted them.

Ditto

Said the same thing at the top of the thread.

Same here then went to catch up with some wonderful WIPs.

Good luck and best wishes on St Patrick's day to all.
