Etiher way .... you'll end up finding a better way to attach it and it will be stronger in the end. I know that you plan for this one to go on the shelf, but eventually you NEED to get this one to a show ... and when you do, you don't want to worry about someone's sleeve grabbing it.

Guys, maybe this is a subject of an entire new thread here--but--you just made me think of this : Maybe it's the extent(or zenith) of our expertise in a  given field (in this case modelbuilding), that on the basis of what we have learned and achieved, we now have infuence over others (and one another) so that at times, our modeling is done solely through the efforts of the modeling of the other. In other words, the idea is such a precious commodity, that though common, is still above value of everything else, and at times , and because of our connection here, we can exact results by simply suggesting ideas.   In that way models can be built without any further effort on our part.          Wind 'em up,set 'rm down, watch 'em go !    Just a thought.

I like making mixes of real dirt and dust w/ som pastels .... applying w/ an old make-up brush. (but, shhh .... the wifey is still looking for it!)

Will did a bang-up job w/ his pigments though ....

My biggest question has always been how to seal up pastels/ pigments w/o changing the look of the weathering. Maybe a light, LIGHT misting of a dull coat, but you're still putting something wet on top of something ... well, something that's supposed to look dusty!?!

Good to see you Scott- although I guess it's only been a few days Laugh [(-D]

I understand the issue with the dullcoat spray. I don't know how much of that dry, dusty look it would get rid of, I'm never sure what to do or how much of a coat to give it. One idea you might want to try Tom, would be an artistic pastel fixative (I don't know if it's that much different than a dullcoat, so maybe just check out the can and see what it's made up of) but it'd be clear and designed to fix pastels to paper/canvas/etc. Again, don't know if it's specially formulated or if it's the same thing that makes up a clear coat spray with a different name...

As far as how to get the look prior to the fixative, good luck!! hahah I think you should ask Will, he's had better results than I- I like the make up brush idea, but I think that would give it an equal, even coat of fine dust- I liked the look Will got with small clumps, fine dust- some cleaner and dirtier areas. He probably just used a small to medium sized paint brush. But that's just a guess.

Looking forward to seeing you revitalize this one Tom!

Tom, A technique I have I used to make mud spatter on fenders and wheel wells, was to take a stiff brush and run your finger over it to flick the mud on...the mud I have always used was paint or wash....I have never used pastels but love the look...I think you have a pretty good handle on it..good luck!

If the "caked on" mud look is what you're going for ... google or search for "making a mud wash".  A lot of guys use it when weathering armor tracks. And Steve is right on ... use a stiff brush to flick the mud on rather than paint it....

The only difference between scale wet mud and scale dry mud is color....a good paint job could be very convincing! my beloved sheetrock mud has a great texture..(hell, its called mud!) and has served me well for both...How thick is your caked on mud going to be and where?

Glad to see your back.

I watched this video first and then tried out on the hummer just by winging most of it, but it's a good video. I don't remember who posted it but it's good.

As far as a clear coat/ whatever, I didn't use anything. I "smash" the pigments in by using a stiff brush and a stabbing motion. they don't move when you blow them, so thats good enough for me! Thumbs Up [tup]

Hope that helped, check out mine Wink [;)]

Hahaha. No problem, I hope it helped.

Are you going to grind up pastels and mix in some real dirt? That should look good.

Plus the glue mixture for the wheel wells, I havn't tried that out yet. I'll tell you how that goes unless you get to it first. Big Smile [:D]

(Maybe you should try out "my" idea for the dio base? Whistling [:-^] LOL)

I said caked mud b/c that's what you would find on a truck in Iraq. Sure there's not much rain, but you drive through so much crap-water, then dirt .... wash, rinse, repeat ... and the truck never get washed off, that it just gets caked on ... But, that's just how I'm going to end up doing mine.

I think that the build looks awesome, but the only thing that grabs me as "wrong" (and its not really wrong ... and it'll be fixed w/ the weathering) is that the truck and the road are pretty dark, and the building is pretty light for the most part .... so, you kinda end up w/ that ying-yang thing going on. But like I said, weathering the truck and then the final weathering of everything will lighten up the truck and the road.

Git-R-don!
