Gentleman, thank you so much for the support and the words of encouragement to continue to move forward.  As you can see, I have heeded your advice and you can see some of the progress here.

I went really heavy with the weathering, it was due to several cracks that needed to be sanded and CA.  But at least it looks exceptable compared to what it looked like last week.  Once again, thank you gentleman.

Toshi, So very, very sorry to hear this! Your attitude is admirable and a positive one regarding the aftermath. I too have put aside defunct projects and used them for paint practice. I have a box called "Paint Mules" where all discarded models get a second lease on life. Happy to see you're continuing on with it and it's looking nice so far.

Mighty nice recovery, it's looking like a 109 that did hard work and keeps on trucking. Good work, buddy, how about a photo when you get it hung up?

No matter the hard landing, you can't keep Toshi down.

Sorry to hear about the nose dive Toshi. Now, if it had been a Stuka, it would have pulled out of that Wink

Glad to see your not ditching it and are going to finish this build.

This is looking really good, Toshi! I applaud your decision to proceed. I nearly trashed my Tamiya P-51 after screwing up the paint job a few times in a row. I suspect that your experience was more heart-breaking though, lol!

Very convincing work. I particularly like the pit and engine work. Forge on!

Perfect Toshi, that will look sweet hanging down from the ceiling or on a stand.

Thank you ScottRC.  I didn't know they make a generic stand for aircraft.  I'm going to look into it.  Any recommendations?

Toshi, if you don't drop, snag, spill, step on, or have chewed on a model thats a work in process, then your not enjoying the full experience of scale modeling.

I was about to say the same thing, Toshi. Its part of the whole deal?

You know what can be worse?  Dropping a fully completed kit. Ive had an FA-18 drop to the floor after someone bumped me during contest egress in the late 90s.  And I was lucky enough to have won an award for that kit.  A month later I gathered up the courage to rebuild it.  It wasnt perfect anymore but I got Humpty back together again.

So just keep going my friend!

Toshi, if you don't drop, snag, spill, step on, or have chewed on a model thats a work in process, then your not enjoying the full experience of scale modeling.

EVERY one of my builds ends up a partial rebuild because of my butter fingers.  I'm captain Klutz of the modeling world.  And whats funny, I build sailing ships, which is why it takes me three years to complete the rigging.  There is nothing like the feeling of spending 30 hours setting all the rigging on a mast and then catching a spar with a shirt sleave and ripping it all into a tangled ball of thread and plastic.  The most common experience I have is knocking a fully rigged bowsprit off a sailing ship with either an arm or when moving it.  I'll try to post a picture sometime of my CSS Alabama with the top main mast sheard off when I was taking it out of the case.  Oh what fun!

The first feeling is to throw the model in the trash and walk away, never to see it again.  The best thing is to do the latter and just walk away from the project for a little while.  Let the dust settle a bit, then go back and start fixing the damage.  Its all part of the hobby.

Keep up the good work Toshi! Scott

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with me.  I've never gone through something this bad as far as Model kits are concerned.  But I feel really good as I started the camoflauge process on the 109 and it's looking really good to me (In my humble opinion).  Once again thank you sir!

That hurts! But very glad to hear you're continuing the project.

I know the feeling... when the roll of tape fell on my D.XXI I almost couldn't bear to assess the damage. In the end it set me back a week's worth (at 1.5 hours per night at most) of filling and sanding, but in the end it will be no worse for wear. Every build is a learning build... get after it!

I so agree, especially with this build; "Every build is a learning build..."  I will continue on and forge ahead!  Thank you for your support and the wise words of advice.  Thank you again suomi39!

Toshi

I'm glad to read that you'll carry on with the 109, even with some damage it's a perfect object to play around with,  to get a handle on some German camo schemes. Baby girl Daughter is quite right, finish it and hang it up, you'll be the only observer to know the poor thing got hurt.

Press on, I'm looking forward to seeing how you manage this "hangar rash."

Hey Toshi, sorry to hear about the crash.  I was looking forward to this build as I have the same kit in my stash.  You were off to a great start on this one.

Mike

My daughter recommended that I continue as is.  The 109 should be built as if it's in it's flight position and hung up from the ceiling.  so says my daughter.  I thought to myself; "How much worse can this be"?  Even after everything happened I still have the Eduard canopy mask on it's way, ETA Thursday or Friday.

With all this excitement LOL, I've yet to stop any build thus far.  So I will forge ahead and finish this model no matter what!  Please continue to follow along, I will do my best to complete this wonderful, detailed kit.  Thank you so much for your support.  This makes me want to finish this project!

To my fellow forum members,

Here's what happened to the drama of the 109.  I dropped the 109 three times, broke the engine off in two, warped the front cowling, cockpit is loose and moving around, oil cooler flaps won't go on correctly hence a huge amount of putty was used, and the landing gear's shattered.  I was at the cusp of AB the whole 109 and very excited!

Here's what I've achieved so far.  I finally got to see what a beauty a 109 is and hence it's popularity, I have that much more experience gathered in my repetoir, and I had such a fun time building the 109.  It has so many different features from other WWII aircraft, it's just mind boggling to me and finally it just looked so cool!

I was going to throw it away.  But I still can save it and learn how to AB a German aircraft.  I've never did the whole mottle thing and there's so many paint color variations that I can learn from this kit, it makes it worth the time and money.

So that's it for this thread.  This is my first busted model beyond repair, yet I feel ok about it.  One can only learn from experience!  The best part about this?  In six months or more, I can purchase another exact kit and build another 109 better than this one.

Toshi

Thanks BrandonK and infofrog.  I'm glad you both like it.  It took me 2 months to purchase and scrounge around for the building tools.  That was 10 months ago when I started to build my very first model.

Toshi

Hi Toshi, nice digs!

Many of us cannot stress the importance in buying good quality tools and brushes.  I have been building for almost 40 years and pretty much all the tools, and many of the brushes I use, are what I got in my first year of building.  Funny, I also still have paint that is good thats over 40 years old.  Keeping everything dry, constant temperature, and organized is the way to go.  You look to have many enjoyable years ahead of you in this hobby Toshi.

I too like the shelf, is that an entertainment center?  Scott

Wow, forty years of experience!  I can't imagine, then again I've seen your quality of work and it speaks of your time and passion for this hobby.

Upon my first kit I could only afford inexpensive tools.  But I treated them as if it were gold.  You sir are so correct, my motto in life is take care of your tools of trade and they will take care of you.

Yes, it is.  I even remember the day my nephew purchased the entertainment shelf some twenty years ago and it's still in good condition.  With flat screen TVs the entertainment center became obsolete for my nephew.  Now it's a really nice display stand for my model kits.

ScottRC, thank you so much for your continued support, I so enjoy your visits and our conversations.  You don't know how much it means to me.

M. Brindos

I think you have the angle on those top wing radiator flaps way too high, Toshi. I've never seen them open that far. Actaually I've never seen them in an upward position ever. I usually see them modelled slightly down.

Someone please correct me here as I only know how those function by seeing them modeled in the past and I don't know what limitations in function they actually have. I just know that they look wrong on Toshi's build. Is he representing them correctly??

Good eye Brindos!  You would be correct about the top flap.

The top flap is deflected downward with the bottom portion of the flap defected a bit further downward.   There will be a gap between the upper & lower portions

Toshi, keep on building my good man.   Yes  This is coming along nicely!

Dave

Yes, M.Brindis caught that one in the nick of time for me.  I really appreciated that.  Great forum, greater forum members.

I will, and thank you, also thank you for the read and reply!
