I have built several P-40's in my modeling career. I'm almost certain this kit was one of them. I recognize the box art mainly, but I built almost exclusively Revell kits when I was a kit, and I know I did a flying tiger. Seams were easy as I didn't care about how well they lined up at that point in time. Actually, I didn't even know there was a putty specifically for models until many years later. Caring about quality is such a curse. Lol.

Hey Toshi, your P-40 is looking good. It is not a bad kit at all, just that the older kits requrie more modeling than the more recent shake-and-bake high priced kits.

I notice you have attached the pitot tube. Because it is so breakable, I might suggest that you leave such items off until the end of the build.

Looking great Toshi! I think old ill fitting kits like this build character and skill. You're beating this one into shape for sure ,keep up the great work.

Your very kind sir!  It's definately a beating except it's beating me up.  LOL!  This kit is worst than a toothpick!  LOL!  While lightly sanding the wings, seams were coming apart.  That's my fault but very frustrating, I ended up using thin CA to button everything up so as to not cause any more separation.

Then the wings jarred loose.  Oh boy!  More CA and even more putty was needed to ensure the wings didn't take off of the fueselage.  I cleaned everything up and now comes the AB!  Thank you for the read and reply!

As you can see, the wings needed some serious adjustments and some Tamiya putty.  Next up is to clean up a few things then my favorite thing to do.  Paint or AB in this case.

Another plane on my want to do list, lol.  It's just something about the teeth I think.  I'll be following along!

Yes, any aircraft with teeth is most menacing! LOL!  Thank you for   following my build(s).  I am honored that you do!

Some of the alignment/mounting pins were either too large or misaligned.  I cut them all off.

I think I know what's wrong with your pilot. He doesn't have any eyebrows lol. Otherwise I think he'll do nicely.  :)

Also, don't forget that the panels behind the cockpit under the glass should be O.D. and NOT the pit color. The same mistake we all seem to make with this kit lol. I did it too!

Otherwise you seem to have this putty monster well in hand. :)

Will do!  Thank you for the tip!  I'll take care of this right now!

Toshi - You could have just bought a one gallon pail of putty, let it set up and then carve out a P-40 in 48th scale. You're a brave modeler tackling this one, but we know you to be fearless.

Like Sting's song words, "I'll be watching you." Good luck with your build.

Mike and Toshi, the OD behind the plexi panels is used only for USAAC/AAF birds.  For the AVG/RAF birds, it is the RAF colors used as shown in color photos of R.T. Smith's aircraft.  Mama Monogram isn't always right as the B models never had the plumbing for drop tanks also.

Minicraft 1/72 B-24D as LB-30, AL-613, "Tough Boy", 28th Composite Group

Yeah I know. That's why we all make that mistake lol. If you look at mine I painted it pit color as well. Just one of the many reasons this kit needs an update lol.

The directions do show do show "D" zinc chromate for that area. Mom told me to follow instructions! LOL.

Nice start Toshi. Good luck, I understand this one is brutal, but I'm sure you'll do it justice..

Thank you lawgdog114!  I need all the luck I can get!  LOL!  Brutal is an understatement.  To the best of my abilities, meager at best.  I'll do what I can to decently complete this very classic old school kit.

As my good friend has pointed out, there were going to be one issue that needed TLC!  And that it pertained to what else?  lets see!  Putty, putty, putty, putty oh yes, let's not forget putty, more putty, and the most important facet of thi build is the putty.

Since you gave away your last one, I say Tigers as well. I think, at this point, you just have to have a Tigers P-40-B in the collection.  Smile

You know, after careful consideration, you're right.  I definately need a Tigershark Hells Angels on this one!  LOL!

Well, at the very least, my figure painting went from the walking dead to the living dead.  I dont know what that means, you have to ask my daughter about that one.  But at the very least we had fun and we laughed.  Especially Mrs. Toshi.

She was at a lost for words, all she wanted today was to go "Panda Express" for lunch.  It was good for what it is, now Mrs. Toshi wants to go again on Monday with my niece.  If I can get out of it, I'll be working on my Tigershark!  LOL!  LOL!

Looking forward to the second time around, Toshi. I hope you have your putty ready to go!  Wink

Which scheme are you going with, this time?

LOL!  I have my share of putty for this kit.  LOL!  I don't know what scheme to go with this yet.  I mean I can go the traditional way and do the Flying Tigers/Hells Angels.  But we shall see.  Any ideas?

Here is my very first AB.  I actually AB a part of the bottom half of the P-40.  I also figured out how to operate it and I actually AB the Revell 1/48 B-24 Liberator of which came out ok.  My only issue were the canned AB propellant.

Even if it sat in a pot of luke warm water, it would still occasionally freeze.  Oh well.  Eventually Mrs. Toshi hooked me up with a Harbor Frieght Tools compressor and siphon AB.  We then went to Hobby Lobby the same day and Mrs. Toshi purchased the NEO by Iwata gravity feed brush.  So that's how I got started in this hobby and everything went from there!
