Bish

White Primer is good but regular model paint will also do. I shot MM flat white enamel. The white color cuts down on the amount of multiple coats yellow or red need to get an even tone.

Well, after the struggle with the yellow, i finally got it sorted, with a good lesson learned in the process, and got some paint on this bird. But first of all the canopy. I got the main piece put together, its not all that neat as its very thin PE which i found awkward to bend, especially on the inside pieces. Overall, while these PE canopy's are nice, i am not sure they are worth the effort given how thin and well detaile dthe kit one is and any shortcomings are dealt with by the Eduard PE set. But i do have the one for the G, so maybe i might change my mind after that.

The white and yellow markings were applied, the white went down fine, but the yellow took me 3 attempts to get right.

Once dried i got those areas masked up and the underside painted. I did that yesterday and today its touch dry, but i will leave it until tomorrow before masking and painting the top. But it does mean i can un mask the wheel wells and fit her legs on.

I alsogbot the figure put together and primed. I know, black figure on a black base, not the best way to take a pic.

And finally a pic of the tail wheel. The decals include a white one for the sides of the wheel. But one pic i saw showed the white well worn, which i gues would not take long in the desert. So i painted the wheel NATO Black. Then i did the white useing Tamiya flat white but not properly mixed. Finally i used the NATO black again, this time with out stiring, and went over the white.

I still have to paint the strut of it RLM 02.

And thats all for now folks.

Bish, tip of the hat for persevering on that PE canopy. I have a very strong dislike for working with acetate or whatever the thin clear material is called. I pretty much can't wait to see what you are able to do with it with your skillsets! But I get ahead of myself.....nice job on the PE. I can't quite imagine what it took but it surely looks good, buddy.

Random thought on the yellow.....

I'd been using MM acrylic gelb for the color gelb, (duh), until I got fed up with it. Moved to Tamiya flat yellow, much better. Then it occurred to me I had read on FSM somewhere a tip to add a bit of red to yellow. I tried that on my yellow-nosed Stuka. Ended up being about 30-35 drops Tamiya flat yellow to 1 drop red. Matched the kit yellow decals almost spot on, and I really like the color.

Just a thought, because I know you are going through a yellow-nose thing. Smile

Ye, going to be interesting to see how those clear sections work out, those will be done right towards the end. I have a lot of experience with PE, but these were a pain. certainly not for a PE novice. Now that's a thought. I use enamels mostly, but I can usually spray other colours no problem, even the white was ok and that was on the same grey primer. I have sprayed this yellow before on fuselage bands and wing tips, so maybe I was having a bad couple of sessions. Bt I will look into that mix. thanks.

That's ok Greg. I also have a full range of Tamiya as I use those a lot for uniforms and small detailed painting.

Great job on that frame Bish and can imagine being a PITA attaching the acetate to it. The yellow looks good so you licked the problem there. I use MM enamel RLM04 and never had a problem spraying it.

I also made a little progress and would have been almost done with the painting and mottling except I had my neighbor across the street come to me this morning for help after her truck died in her driveway. We got it straightened out but lost a few hours in the process.

I shot the RLM74 and taped the areas for the splinter pattern on the wings and tail feathers. The fuselage was done freehand with my Badger Renegade.

Then shot the RLM75. I still have to go back and re spray some small areas to correct them. The RLM74 and 75 mottling will be next in line.

Thanks PJ. Nice work on the camo there, and there's that foam again. That defiantly looks better than stuffing the pit with tissue.

Bish: Man that canopy looks great!!! Coming along nicely!!

Ernie: I hear you on the "good neighbor act". My neighbor across the street needs me to put a starter in their Nissan truck. Your 109 is looking great bud.

Looking good, Ernie.

Can you say again where you have scrounged that soft foam, please? I know I've seen and handled it, just drawing a blank.

Thanks boys for the compliments.

Greg

That foam came as packing material in one of the packages we received here at the house so I decided to keep the small pieces just for this use. It's just like the soft pliable foam in a pillow or a cushion only just a tad firmer. I remember seeing this kind if packing in computer boxes we got at work some years back before I retired.

This is the same thing:

Greg

Ernie, thanks! And also for the link.

You are very welcome Greg. I just cut the chunks to whatever size I need.

If you rip a small piece and grab it with your tweezers, then dunk it into some aluminum paint, it becomes a great chipping tool when lightly dabbed on the desired area. Blot it on some paper towel first to remove the excess Paint then chip away,

Now there's a clever idea. Thanks again, Ernie.

Fellas, I'm not the kind of guy to tell stories out of school, but if you are into larger scales, I just noticed Sprue Bros has their 1/32 Weekend Edition 109Es on sale for 22.49 USD. Thats only 2 bucks more than the 1/48 kit. Wow. Almost makes this dedicated quarter scale man want to size up.

Finally got the mottling done and several coats of Aqua Gloss were applied to prepare the surface for decals and Flory washes. (when they get here from the other side of the pond)

Yes there is that funny lookng foam again, this time in the supercharger intake

I used a 3200 grit pad to lightly rub down the finish before and after spraying the gloss.

AJ, thanks for the heads up re Squardron's Eduard price.

PJ, mottle and the rest looks excellent as usual. I'm kind of excited for you to try the Flory wash. Hope you like it. I sure do.

Lookin' good, Bish and PJ. You're on the home stretch! It'll great to see them done.

You're gonna like that flory, PJ. It's so easy to work with.

I'm a little late to the discussion about RLM 04 yellow. I've had good luck just using RLM65 as a base coat for it. It makes it realy convenient. The key, at least for me, is to just build it up very slowly. The tendency is to hurry and keep pushing paint until you 'see' the yellow tone you want, which makes it too thick. This, without drying between the many very thin coats you need.
