Wow Sean! I am glad to see it back on your bench! You have so much work in it already and it looks really cool! Stick a pilot in there aqnd you'd never see the rudder pedal! LOL!  You got back on that Corsair horse much faster than I had anticipated with all your other builds going!  Glad to see you aren't letting it get the best of you!  If you had tossed it I think Frank woulda been digging in the landfill with Charlene!  Party time! OT - Aaron , I pulled off from the back of the top shelf. Lots of small parts still in a zip ~lock baggie . Pilot is less one rudder pedal he will only be able to go in circles , or get real good using his flaps. You do know you were one of the first guys who spoke up and saved this from the trashX-2 The shadow helps hide the repair of re ~ attaching the wing Clown [:o)]

  Hey thanks again everyone.  Bill that was my issue as my pic on the nose was very distorted.

I guessed on it and probably got it wrong. If we are talking about the same seam on the nose ahead of the turret.  Also was questionable about the color as the door if it was even there looks to be the hull color. In the absence of a good pic of the bkue goose I just went with the kit instructions. ACK ! Easy fix if it shouldn't be there or the color is off.

 Looking to see yours finished soon too MKelly! and Sean!  I think the poor BVD has been hornswaggled!  Bondo did you take him watersking on a submarine again? Make a Toast [#toast]Pirate [oX)]

Thanks fellows! I looked back. Broke sprue on Jan 3rd. Ack! 2weeks 2days! Must be slowing down in my old age!  Guy will whip me for sure!  Twinkies are cream filled spong cakes! High calorie very bad for you stuff! Yummy! Looking at something Italian next!

 Div 6 aka  E---! Thanks  The main coats are simply rattle can Model Master intermediate blue and Light aircraft gray. These are highlighted and panel washed extc with various shades of acyrilic and enamels depending on what effect they give. I keep trying stuff until I think it looks ok. Here is a pic of the blue paints and the bench as it was getting reorganized for the next styrene monster!

That rattle can intermediate blue is good stuff! a little goes a long way as it covers great and drys fast and smooth!

 A couple things not in the picture you won't catch me without is the Dremel tool, modeling clay, silly putty, and masking tape. Add that to the stack there and you can tckle nearly anything!

The future is great protection for aggressive painting and weathering!  No issues with the Monogram decals once covered with it and no reactions to diff types of paints and thinners for weathering! Only downside is it can hide fine recessed details after only a couple coats but can be removed with simple windex.

Well I am all done and have it in the window letting a few last assemblys and paint touch-ups dry so I can get some pics up! I got my batteries charged and have a last few in progress pics to show while I wait.

Using the pics and links provided in this GB as a guide I weathered the bottom pretty moderately especially around the engines and fuel dumps. Did a lot of temporary attaching of things like the torpedoes just in case more info comes to light about the improvised rack/manueal drop system that Major Cram used. I figure has to be something  attaching to the current bomb hardpoints for simplicities sake.  Combat improvisation!

I am very happy with how the preshading and weathering on the lower hull turned out. Only thing I would do over in hindsite is remove the molded on anchor rope and replace it with real kite twine or thread to look more the part.

These things are loads of fun to mask and paint and clean up let me tell you!

Here it sits as I do the last few things. Adding all the antenna arrays, pitot tubes extc.

I tacked down all the clear parts with the clear part cement in the corners so when I finally get time to perfect my crew mold and cast I can add some life to it!

Anyway, I posted about building the PBY LG using the wheel well as a template. We all do what is comfortable for us. As long as it works, what the heck!

For anyone building 1/48th version, follow the directions for the main landing gear. I glued the wheel wells in without the gear, not a good idea! It was a bear to get everything in there and lined up the way it should be. I think that it will be OK but, I can say that I out-smarted myself with that little SNAFU. Life has been hectic, mother -in-law passed away last weekend, a lot of time at the funeral home. Our house has been the meeting place for everyone and it has been full of relatives. Sure makes it easier for everyone. I did get along great with my-in-law. Add in   -17 below last night and a frozen pipe this morning and I have not made much progress lately on the kit. I plan on working on the Cat on Saturday, tonight I am off for some ale and dinner with some friends. Smile [:)]

Any ways here is some scans of the old Pro Modeler after market decal instructions.  Snafu Snatcher's was a new option with these before the re-releases. I wanted to include the info sheet as it has some good info! Of intrest is the template for the flame dampening exhaust!

 Ah I said almost done. The kit is complete except for eventually adding a crew when I get them right. Also I am adding some Torpedos with adapted mounts to Replicate the Blue Goose which was used to attack  Jap Transports off Guadalcanal.

Here is the story which is unbelievable. A Pilot on his first ever combat torpedo run with rigged up releases attacking a Jap task force in daylight, scoring a hit and living to tell about it? Well I can't do anything else but believe it I suppose! WOW!

Here is the History in his own words pretty cool.  I'll have pics up tomorrow if work cooperates if not I may have to wait until Sunday. Charging the batteries tonight. Confused [%-)]

Jack Cram's report

 

PBY Mission: Torpedo The Transports

Major Jack Cram, USMC, was General Geiger's junior aide and flew the General's private PBY - always. Never did the General fly without Major Cram at the yoke and rarely was there a pilot occupying the co-pilot's seat, except General Geiger. But the size of the PBY, and it subject to the constant bombardment of the General's area, prompted Geiger to order Major Cram to limit his activities to transporting supplies and personnel.

On the afternoon of the 14th of October, Major Cram landed his PBY between the bomb craters on Henderson Field with a torpedo attached under each wing, having picked them up at Noumea, New Caledonia for Torpedo Squadron Eight. But the TBF squadron had been bombed and shot out of service before the Major's arrival at the field and there seemed no apparent use for the torpedoes. However, the Major came up with a hair-raising idea that contributed to the defense of the United States' position on Guadalcanal and caused the General to write out a citation leading to the award of the Navy Cross to this brave man.

Jack Cram is currently in business in the San Francisco bay area of California, having long since retired from the Marine Corps but his dedication to the Corps and to his country carried him to the rank of General.

"I dodged shrapnel and bombs, most of the time from a foxhole, all night of the 14th of October. Our Operations Officer, Joe Renner, spent much of the time with me and painted a picture so critical of our chances that nothing short of a miracle could save us. But I was getting the hint of an idea and, as soon as there was a let-up in the bombardment, I approached General Geiger's aide, Toby Munn, with a request to let me rig a manual release for the two torpedoes still on my PBY and attack the Jap troop transports. As crazy as the plan was, Colonel Munn agreed there was little else left for any of us and immediately took me to the General. He gave his blessing and ordered us to find as much protection as we could from the remaining flyable aircraft.

"Jap troop transports were already landing reinforcements at Tassafaronga and they were all but unopposed. Only an occasional F4F or P - 39 broke through the fierce anti-aircraft screen put up by the Jap destroyers. But the unbelievable ground crews began performing one small miracle after another as they, somehow, pieced together over a half-dozen bedraggled F4Fs and P-39s to give me fighter coverage for my run; about a dozen SBD dive bombers staged a simultaneous attack.

"By 1000 hours we were ready. I had just received a crash course in the art of aircraft torpedo bombing - from a PBY - with a makeshift manual release for the torpedoes, speed recommendations and proper drop altitude.

"My entire crew climbed aboard the Cat with me and we took off, heading out toward Savo Island where I took her up to about 6000 feet before pushing over into a long dive. I lined up between two of the transports and was concentrating so much on what I was supposed to do next that I forgot about my airspeed. When the plane began to shake, and the wings looked as if they were on a sea gull in flight, I chanced a look at the airspeed indicator. I thought, at that moment, I was dead for sure. The plane was ripping through the air at 240 knots - at least 60 knots beyond safe air speed for a PBY.

"Even though I eased up, we were still going so fast we passed over the destroyer screen before they saw us, and suddenly, there were my targets. I released one torpedo, waited a couple of seconds, then pulled the release on the other and started to get the hell out of there. I pulled the Cat up into a left turn and headed for Henderson Field. Back behind, one of our torpedoes scored a direct hit on a transport while the other one missed.

"But our troubles were just beginning. All at once there were Zeros all around us and we were taking a terrific pounding with some distance to go to the field. Duke Davis and his F4F fighter cover were doing everything they could to get the Japs off our tail and barely succeeded. One persistant Zero kept closing on us as we passed over Henderson but he was blasted out of the sky by a crippled Grumman, flown by Roger Haberman of Fighting 121. He was trying to negotiate a landing and already had his wheels down when he spotted our predicament. He poured on the gas and got the Jap, just before he got us. It turned out to be his first-ever kill.

I can now get back to work on my 1/72 PBY as my order from Squadron showed today with the Mask's and Vac-form canopy I wanted to see before I joined the fuse halfs.
