Ok where am I at?

Seeing PBY's in my dreams at this rate!  I don't know if you fellows notice how I pre paint almost everything. Especially on larger models. The real benefit to this is to simplify masking. Stuck on the Canopy but painted the blisters separately just because they look a little tricky to position. You can see other than the canopy and blisters that masking is a simple quick thing now. Lightly brushed Zinc chromate green on the canopy in very light coats. This seals the mask and reduces the chance of bleeding under when it drys. Then it's a simple matter of a quick spray of the blue gray!

Wow that seam is looking much more better. ( Texas Talk) Ye Haw!

Stuck my wheels where I can see them! I call it Frank the Impaler style modeling! Laugh [(-D]

Thanks Ritchie and Sean! I thought I was actually accomplishing something today then Frank zips in and out working on 4 complicated builds at one time! Jeeze how to you keep up with that?

I got all my masking done! Wish now I had put my name in Nam's hat for those mask. That is a lot of masking and I never seem to have any Tamiya tape? Always mean to get some but always slips my mind!

Found the wheels when I took the photo's! I had painted them dark german gray and laid them on top of the German gray bottle. They blended right in! Good camo!  Saw them when I looked at the pics. DUH!  I knew they couldn't be far... BTW has anyone seen my propellers? Banged Head [banghead] Really need to straighten up the bench this is getting outta hand zooming from one build to the next! I am having more fun than a flea at the dog pound!

I was all set to tack on the mask window stuff and paint but almost forgot the stuff under the canopy. Just one part looked kinda empty compared to the pic in the instructions so I added a bit of clutter.

Nothing special but something in an empty area that shows up. After it dries Ill paint the fist coat the interior color and tack it on and go to town! It's getting there! Wink [;)]

Aaron - you are making progress with leaps and bounds. I cant even begin to tell you how excited I am to see the progress you have made.  Thanks for the tips on the Fuse joining. I also commend you for the pictures Thumbs Up [tup] - when I get into something like that I just keep working and forget to stop and click a pic.  I will try the same method joining the 1/48 PBY so  mine doesn't look like I used a Hammer or my Boot ! I got the wing sections on the 1/72 CG PBY late last night, all 17.25" worth Laugh [(-D]

Believe it or not I mucked off the bench today , and have been messing with a 1/72 Matchbox JU-188 for another forum I visit. (UAMF)

Ha I enjoy Bondo's conversations! What you fellows missed is he is going to the beach Today! Supplies on the porch. Evidently I am not the only one enjoying the sunshine and outside warmth.  Frank the 68 was this morning, The sun is coming in my 2 open windows now, Fans a blowing and it's holding steady at 75 in my room!

Been working on the PBY last night and this AM! Joined the fuselage all up!  It is one very long curvy seam along the top and bottom! let me tell you!. Did it bit by bit getting as close as possible. Taked it in places with superglue and then used the liquid cement to weld it together.

Filled it bit by bit with some Mr Surfacer along the entire thing and commenced to sanding and sanding and sanding. Hey look there are my wheels! Party [party]

then sanded some more.

Did the large 5 part wing in steps.  Again little by little. Got the same seam treatment but wasn't nearly as rough as the fuselage with all the curves in it.

Got the wing looking almost perfect in the fit. Had to remove two locating pins on the rear back inside for the last two top pieces or they would have thrown off the fit. The large pieces really don't take much to throw off the angle and fit. A little descrepancy on one end equals a big gap on the other. How long is this wing like 2 1/2 feet? Looking large!

Going to take a quick food break as I am enjoying myself so much I forgot to eat then I am ready to start masking all that clear stuff that I Futured up 3 or 4 days ago!  Make a Toast [#toast]

Oh yeah? Alex! I don't think the painted type mattered as long as it was good and dry and covered the whole plastic part. Just need that barrier to stop the reaction between the rubber/vinyle and the styrene. Heck a coat of future might work too?  Yeah I know those Armor fellows... Laugh [(-D] But they deal with rubber and vinyl at lot on those kits. Tracks/ truck tires extc. Probably can trust them on that.

Hiya Gang! The BVD took most of yesterday off as I felt the flu coming on (with all the attendant symptomsYuck [yuck]Sleepy [|)]Dead [xx(]) Nyquil, gin and sleep seems to have revived me! All Hail THE BVD!

Alex! Congratulations!!! Well Done! Here's to the best forever! Now you can start your own GB! 1/1 people!

Those rubber tires.....had you not already bought one.....a tire could've been a ring! As it stands.....put them on ebay as designer toe rings! Think of it as extra traction.

I heard that if you thin the hub paint color with acetone......the hub will eat the tire!Laugh [(-D]

Armor!? Shock [:O]  You mean...I mean...Armor??  Who goes over there?! Whistling [:-^]Wink [;)]

Thanks Aaron!  I'll have to give that a shot...maybe I can finally beat the stupid rubber tires. Can I paint them with normal enamel or acrylic?  Do they have to be primed with something weird?  I have never touched those darn things ever since that Tigercat...I guess I was scarred for life!

Cheers,
Alex

I was just reading somewhere on this very forum alex about that issue. Think it was over in armor.  The fix is easy. Simply paint all parts that will or could contact with the rubber.  They say the paint barrier is enough to prevent the rubber eating the parts.

I hate rubber tires!  Ever since I built my first AMT Tigercat at the age of 8, just to have the rubber eat the plastic wheels, I've despised the use of rubber in kits.  I usually buy resin wheels, or dig something out of my spares box so that I don't have to use them.  Of course, the Academy Catalina comes with rubber tires...Of course, no one makes a resin beaching gear set in 1/72...Of course, my spares box comes up empty the one time it matters...

Ranting aside, how can I use these tires, (since it looks like I have to if I want beaching gear) without having them eat the plastic rims?  Sean, does your Catalina have kit have rubber tires? Blech!  I hate those things!

Cheers,
Alex

Stick weights are good, but as Nam recently figuredout, on a rare lucent day, go down to the tire shop and they'll give you old lead wheel balance weights for FREE!!! Always makes me happy!!!

Good grief pick on Aaron day?

Aaron!  We're only picking on ya cause we like ya!  You're right, though, telling you guys about it completely slipped my mind...Sorry...Too many Catalinas!

I did it right.  I took her Dad out to the Boeing Museum of Flight (he's an airplane guy too) then to a nice Italian restaurant without her knowing and asked for his blessing.  A few days later, I took her up to her favorite mountain overlook of the city, then got down on one knee, in the middle of the snow and yuck and freezing cold in Seattle, at her favorite mountain overlook of the city at night on New Year's Eve, and...she said yes!  We watched the ball drop, and the fireworks shoot off the Space Needle.  Then we went back to her folks' house and told everyone and had a big party!Party [party]  I had gotten a ring, and brought it up with me, without her knowing a thing about it...so I put it on her finger then.  She loves it!  We haven't set an exact date yet, but its going to be late July or early August of this year.

And, yeah, I shaved first! LOL!  I'm actually a pretty clean shaven guy, it just grows really quickly.  If you've seen me in the last 2 Secret Santa GBs, I haven't shaved that morning...one day later, and its like I never shaved at all.

Anyways, we've been busy planning wedding stuff ever since.  She has a big deadline on Monday morning, so she's been at work all day today, which means a break from wedding planning, some time on here, a nice cold Coor's
Make a Toast [#toast], and some modeling time!  Hooray!

Thanks for all the congratulations, everyone!  We're both really happy!

PS - Aaron, check the cushions...that's where I lose things all the time.

Cheers,
Alex

Hmmm Great stuff Sean! Great tip on the prop shafts!  Still haven't found my wheels? Huh? Musta put them in a real safe place to dry. The will turn up. Always do..  Been messing round painting stuff on and off all day to let it dry in between.  Trying to be a patient little builder.  Really I have amazed myself. These wheels have to be with-in an arms reach of my chair. I am just astounded!  I don't really need them right at the moment anyhow but it's odd ya KNow? Thanks for the info and offers but this is getting personal! Grumpy [|(]

Sean, that is a great idea!  I'm gonna have to try that, as I usually lose my prop shafts for that exact reason.  Thumbs Up [tup]

I came across another cool website just now...its not useful to me, but all you guys building rescue birds should check it out...

http://www.pbyrescue.com/

If you go to their photos section, there's a lot to look at.

On another note, can anyone tell me if the part of the wing that the float retracts into is actually chromate primer, like Academy calls for, or if it was oversprayed with the undersurfaces color?  I'm toying around with an idea for a neat effect.  'The Dabster' was beat all to hell, with chipped and faded paint everywhere...I'm thinking about painting that part of the wing chromate primer, then applying chipped black paint over it, so the green shows through...Whaddya think?  I'm not sure if it would look odd or if it would work.

Cheers,
Alex

The 1/72 CG PBY progress has been good today. I actually could have joined the Fuse halfs , but since I decided to order a set of mask for this and the  1/48 scale PBY  .. I also ordered a Vacuform canopy set - waiting for that before I go any farther.

Bondo - this is for you, you commented on another thread about my Prop. Shaft blocks  - I did the same on this build. I like the prop to be one of the last steps. No mishaps that way. Thanks for the link.

I actually have all thos pix saved.

I did watch a video on youtube that had a quick glims of what I needed to know.

By the way, while tinkering with the bulkheads and floors I realized the cockpit floor on the Academy 1/72 is wrong.

There shouldn't be that big open slot down the middle.

Time to use the 1/48 for reference to make a new one that will accommodate the wheel well below.

Since I have thin vacformed windows it will be seen. Wink [;)]

Eric, for your interior...for what its worth, check out this build.  I'm sure its been posted before, but it is immaculate work, and he didn't bother doing much at all to the interior of the wheel wells:
