I think I'll have a go at this one although I have no idea what being in a group build means..Big Smile [:D]. This will be my first. There seems to be enough time anyway even with my Trumpeter 1/48 P40 between the Typhoon I'm building now (nearly finished) and the PBY. I will likely just build whatever version is in the box - and if there are more than one, I'll have to decide once the model actually arrives at my house - I just ordered it. Hope that's OK. Do I need anything else?

Ok never too early to start prepping.  This may be old hat to some of you fellers but I want to get some info out for future refs.

Ok I have these two kits in 1/48. The Pro Modeler from 1997 and a newer release from 2002 which may be an exact box art copy of the present re-release.

 I didn't order the re-release cuz well I have 2 I haven't touched yet. Whistling [:-^]

Don't laugh bet there are plenty like me out there! Cool [8D]

I wanted to show both sets of directions for a reason. They are the same exact kit piece by piece but as you may know the Pro-modeler booklet includes some pics of the real thing for ref.

The other kit directions are just exploited drawings including a step for the crew members which were included in 2002 but apparently not in the re-release.

In reality it is only two diff figures,  Slightly different) A pilot and a gunner for the side bubbles. Pretty nice action pose you don't see everyday.

Anyways trying to think out things. I am going too in a few days scan these directions especially the Pro-modeler ones. When I get them done I'll se if I can get something readable for those who would like them e-mailed as a comparison for their 1/48 build.

Figure it can't hurt with the size of this beast!  Here are the pRO-modeler decals which oddly are much simpler than the new release.

"HOWWWWWWDYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!! I'm just so proud to be here."-Minnie Pearl from Hee Haw and Grand Ole Opry fame.

Didn't realize it had already started! Anyways as afore mentioned Nam I would like to add the 1/72 Airfix Cat in RAAF markings. Will do a bit of research and drum up some more AM bits for it in the mean time. Ohhhh YEAH I have some detail shots of a Cat flying here in Oz that was at the last airshow here. Almost forgot about them. Will post them soon as I have to sort through the pic files on the hard drive. Looking forward to these builds! Would LOVE to see a firebomber in 1/48!!! The shear size and bright colors would be totally cool!!! Later mates!!!!!

Nam,

My Cat will either be the Airfix or Revell in RAF Coastal Command colors, unless I can find one in Cousteau Society markings relatively cheap.

Hey everyone!

I was charged with designing a badge for this GB by the CIC, Sir Nam.  I am posting it here now, but he plans on adding it to page 1 as soon as he is able to sort out his computer.  Enjoy! Thumbs Up [tup]

Hey everyone, I'll get in on this. I have several other builds going right now, but this one starts far enough out to commit to.

I'll be building a 1/144 Minicraft PBY-5A... looks like it'll be the runt of the litter. Laugh [(-D]

For inspirational purposes, here's a link to a jaw-dropping 1/48 PBY-5 build. Enjoy!

I had a good look at my Airfix kit lastnight and as soon as I pulled out the box I realized it was a -5A. The AM decals I have are for a -5. Is there that much difference between the two besides the fact one has gear. What I'm asking is, would I be able to just fair over the gear wells and add the window on the fuse you think???? My research material is limited for the PBY.Confused [%-)]

Here are some pics of the 'Cat that's flying here in Oz. Will come in handy for alot of us I know so enjoy and download for future ref.

Great detail shots, simpilot! My build is going to be 1/144 so I won't be doing much in the way of an interior, but your exterior shots will be helpful! Thanks for those. The PBY is one warbird that I've never seen up close.

I'm short on PBY references, so can anyone tell me: On a PBY-5A, can the gear and the pontoons be lowered at the same time, or is it one or the other? My itty-bitty Cat is going to sit on its wheels, but I'm wondering whether the floats should be up or down.

Kevin, you're quite welcome for the pics!!! I'm almost positive that you could have them both down, you would have to do maintenance on the floats. Just I wouldn't advise taxying with them down is all. ALot of pics show them both down. I would imagine there would be a seperate retraction lever for the floats.

Hey guys, do we HAVE to hit the "quote" button and re-post a bunch of pictures?  Not everyone has a super-fast connection to load pages in a blink...  If ya need to quote, try typing in the commands for it.  Put the word "quote" (all lower case) in brackets [ ], paste the text you want to quote in next to it, then type "quote" again in brackets, with the slash in front of the "q"... [/ ]

Yes a PBY-5A can fly with both the wheels and floats down. Have a look at the photo here of her on the ground:

http://www.airliners.net/photo/Untitled-(Plane-Sailing)/Canadian-Vickers-Canso/1276119&tbl=photo_info&photo_nr=26&sok=keyword_%28%5C%27%2B%5C%22g-pbya%5C%22%5C%27_IN_BOOLEAN_MODE%29%29_&sort=_order_by_photo_id_DESC_&prev_id=1290783&next_id=1260873

And they can be lowerd in the air but i cant find a photo of that right now.

I've checked my (limited) PBY print refs.....no pics of a Cat in-flight with both LG and outriggers deployed. Not sure. But on the ground.....certainly.

Still looking into the -5.....-5A question, as well as the MTO/torpedo question.

HvH, I agree........no need to quote an entire photo array. Even with cable, things take extra time to load.....dial-up must be maddening! All one need do is use the 'quote' button.....then place the cursor just prior to the final 'quote' bracket.....then 'backspace' through the pic parts until you reach the text you want to reply to. This will wipe out the extraneous part of the post and allows a reply to the meat of the matter. I'm not saying anything new here. But it saves time.

Richie!!!!!! Thanks so much for the great photos! Just Fabulous!Thumbs Up [tup]
