What kit is the Jagdpanzer?

First off thanks guys. The Jagdpanzer kit is a Dragon kit, not a bad kit at all. The Panzer IV is the Tamiya offering and doesn't come with any schurzen whatsoever, and the kit comes with the early/standard style exhuast, I just snagged the late exhausts from the Dragon spares box. I'm also working on the old Dragon Panzer IV ausf. J Late, that one does come with the parts to make the mesh schurzen(thoma skirts). I'm pushing my comfort zone by using more photo etch on this one, so it's going to take a little longer.

Are those Thoma's kit parts? Or AM/scratchbuilt? Nifty.

Again, thanks for all the great comments. The "Thoma" skirts are assembled using the kit supplied parts, which consist of a large sheet of mesh and parts for the framing. You have to basically make a template to cut the mesh to shape then add the plastic framing parts. They can be a little tricky to make but not too bad and when finished look the part. And Dupes I have yet another 2 Panzer IV based vehicles almost done (the Panzer IV with the Schmallturm and a Panzer IV Ausf. J Late, both with more Thoma skirts) and another might be started in the near future. Thanks again everybody for the kind compliments.

After several washes, filters, pigments and dry brushes this is where the weathering stands.  At this scale I don't think I should do any more so my attention will turn to the tracks and road wheels.

The kit does not come with a tow cable.  I had been playing around with different method of twisting my own and I think I have some decent looking results.  The cable is made form 12 wires twisted.  They come form and ear bud headphone.  The strands are extremely thin, like hair.  4 wires are twisted together then those 3 resulting wires are twisted.  The sleeve is metal tubing and the insert for the loop is lead foil.

Marc - you need to stop scratchbuilding parts (fine quality parts, I might add) in 1/72 scale. You're making the rest of us look bad! Angry [:(!]

Looks pretty darn good, btw. Wink [;)] Thumbs Up [tup]

Hey wing_nut, Great looking tow cable Bow [bow] I'll be looking around the Bunker for thinner wire and the metal tubing. Very useful tip in any scale, but really amazing in 1/72! Nice work.

Thanks guys.

Mobius, here is a pic so you can see some size comparisons.  The thicker cable is made the same way, 12 wires...1st 4 twisted then those 3 twisted, the wire if from a lamp cord.  The little rod buythe small cbale is a #80 drill bit.

Hey wing_nut, I'll be looking forward to trying that tip out. Thanks for posting the tip. I'm sure I will find it extremely useful. BTW, I had to look back a few pages just to find out the PzIV F2 is 1/72 scale. That is an awesome job on the AFV.Bow [bow] Looks like a great kit too.

Guys: It's been awhile since my last update...here's some WIP pics, I'm about 90% done.  The decals, if you recall, have been a sore spot...I did the best I could to make lemonade from lemons.

Hey SMJ, Glad to see the old Tamiya kit still builds into a decent model. Nice job on the weathering, sorry to hear about the woes of the old "Thick" decals. I built one of these awhile ago, with the short barrel 75mm. They are fun kits to build.

Steve,

Are you kidding me??!!  That thing came out GREAT!  Unbelievable - the way those decals used to stand out like a sore thumb, you've done a really nice job making them disappear.

Awesome!

I have only one complaint about it Steve.

You have not asked me for my home address yet.  How are you going to know where to send it? Big Smile [:D]

Panzer88 -- stupendous work!

Dupes -- your cable technique is amazing, I have got to try this one day!

SMJ -- my hat is off to you, that's one of the finest AFV paintjobs I have ever seen. Not just the painted save on the decals, but the sensation of this being a heavy, metal machine, not a piece of plastic!

No progress on my own Guderian's Duck yet, I'm over at Corsairs scrambling for my badge in the next four days (had to start something new -- long story...)

Cheers,

Mike

Nice job, Steve.  What an intricate paint job.  And a great save on those decals!  I remember some of your earlier photos and thinking that there was no way you were going to fix the silvering short of removing them and starting over.  What a difference. Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

Gotta say the stylistically, I tend to the less weathered end of the scale, but you've done a really fine job here.

Appologies, Wingnut my friend -- eyes are crossed here (it makes it hard building things!) No, of course, I'm talking about your breathtaking braidwork, making miniature bowden cable, complete with endpieces. How do you get the cable snugged into the ends? Do you crimp the tubing down around a double pass of wire to create the loop? I bought some Eureka copper cables for a couple of projects, but your homemade cables at even better!

Hey wackjob,

Hopefully one of the things that you will realize here soon is that (to most people - don't get me started on the exceptions Tongue [:P]), your number of posts is meaningless - well, unless you come off as a big fat turd with your first post, but this is your second, so you are good to go Evil [}:)]...

Seriously though, I don't think anyone would tell you to shut up or to see your comments as negative - you pointed out something that you saw.   You made a valid observation and did it in a constructive way.  No reason to shut up with that type of feedback.  That is the kind of give and take that most of us look forward to.  And, knowing SMJ just a little bit, I doubt he will take any offense at your comments - he is one of those guys who puts his stuff up here so people CAN tear it apart because he is constantly striving to 'reach the next level' with his builds (he's kinda crazy like that Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]).

So, anyways, Sign - Welcome [#welcome], and keep up with the good feedback.

Boyd, TBolt... thanks guys.

TBolt I am just bustin' cojones mi amigo.  We both spell our names with a C so that must have thrown you off.

I am now standing front and center to accept my promotion to Obergefreiter.  My qualifications are listed below with the 1/72 Dragon Pz IV F1(F).  As good a kit as it big brother.  I may do a few more of these.

Mobious/bbrokwniii/glamdring/wing_nut/T379/stick man/pordoi: Thanks for the kind words guys, I really do appreciate ithem...and it's good to hear the decal "save" doesn't look too hokey.

wackjob: No offense taken whatsoever.  In fact, I'd like you to expand on your comment if you would please.  Does the amount of wear on the undercarriage look underdone, or does it look to clean?  If it's the wear please be more specific as to where you think it's underdone. If it's just too clean I may add some dirt...which I was already considering.  That's why we post our stuff, by-the-way...to get input, to have others point out obvious stuff we sometimes miss, re-affirm something we know we should have done or just to get a friendly "atta boy"...which is great to hear after all the hours of hard work.  Glad to have you here!Sign - Welcome [#welcome]

wing_nut:Shock [:O] I didn't realize that was 1:72!  Is that the one that someone here said their wife thought it was "cute".  I agree it's just lovelyBlush [:I]  Seriously though, great work on such a small subject!

well first i must say thankyou  because i  wanted to be sure i was not being a &*^  .

that said, you asked if i meant too clean or too underweared  (underweared  i made a funny)

i say both .     it needs some mud etc.. also with the kind of abuse that tank has taken to show that much wear on the top i think  a couple of the tyres should have some chunks missing , and the lower part of the fenders a few dents and maybe  a bit of the edges on one or more corners  missing  as seen in many wwii photos of war weary armor

thank you
