1,000 Roadwheels - 2009
Posted by dupes on Sunday, November 16, 2008 11:47 AM

1,000 Roadwheels – The Panzer IV and its Variants

Alright, as mentioned in the preparatory thread in the armor forum, this GB is all about the Panzer IV and all of the German designs based off of its chassis. The list is long – even longer than you might think. Current count has us over 25 different vehicles able to be represented, more if one wants to do a bit of scratchbuilding to model one of the many prototypes that were designed but never put into regular service. With that in mind, the GB should probably be called 800 Roadwheels (25x32), but with all the prototypes (and spare roadwheels!) I think we can agree on 1,000. Wink [;)]

GB rule-type stuff:

Running dates will be from January 1, 2009 until December 31, 2009.

Any/all aftermarket, scratchbuilding etc. etc. is fully allowed and encouraged.

Kits unstarted. No GB crossovers. Kit must be based on the Panzer IV chassis.

Badges: anyone who joins the GB is eligible for the first badge (Soldat). As you complete builds, remove your old badge and replace it with the appropriate rank. If anyone finishes more than 5 builds, I'll make another badge with Officer status. Thumbs Up [tup]

Soldat -

Gefreiter (one complete) -

Obergefreiter (two complete) -

Hauptgefreiter (three complete) -

Stabsgefreiter (four complete) -

Oberstabsgefreiter (five complete) -

So let’s try to list all of the vehicles that are eligible. Here’s what I’ve come up with so far – feel free to mention any that I’ve missed so that they can be added.

  • Panzer IV (Sd.Kfz.161) Ausf. A, B, C, D, E, F1, F2, G, H, J. In addition to these, you have the Panzerbefehlswagen and Panzerbeobachtungswagen modifications within the different Ausfuhrungs, as well as uparmored versions.
  • 10.5cm K18 auf Panzer-Selbstfarhlafette IVa, or “Dicker Max”
  • Sturmgeschutz IV
  • Jagdpanzer IV Ausf. F (Sd.Kfz.162), Panzer IV/70(V) (Sd.Kfz.162/1)
  • Sturmpanzer IV (Sd.Kfz.166)
  • 3.7cm Flak 43 Auf Sfl Pz.Kpfw.IV “Mobelwagen”
  • Flakpanzer IV, 2cm “Wirbelwind”
  • Flakpanzer IV, 3.7cm “Ostwind”
  • Leichter Flakpanzer IV 3cm “Kugelblitz”
  • 8.8cm Pak 43/1 auf Fahrgestell III/IV “Hornisse/Nashorn” (Sd.Kfz.164)
  • 15cm sFH 18/1 auf Fahrgestell III/IV “Hummel” (Sd.Kfz.165)
  • leFH18/1 Gw IV b (Sd.Kfz.165/1)
  • Leichte Feldhaubitze “Heuschreke 10”
  • Munitionstrager auf Fahrgestell III/IV

  • Panzekampfwagen IV 88mm
  • Panzerkampfwagen IV Bruckenleger

This list is NOT complete – there are a lot of different prototypes, one-offs, and individual modifications that happened to different vehicles that don’t warrant their own variant names or Ausfuhrungs, but are nonetheless a Panzer IV – based vehicle (think things like “vorpanzers” which were essentially a standard IV with some extra armor bolted on).

Reference goodies (kits, books, URL's, etc)

Kit availability – there’s no way to list everything that’s ever been boxed that had a Panzer IV chassis underneath it, but I can come up with a good start, anyway (I’m positive there’s more CH stuff). Will organize by manufacturer. Only doing 1/35 scale…lot more stuff in 1/48 and 1/72 if you’re so inclined. Some of these are discontinued kits – but can be had on the cheap if you’re that type of shopper.

Dupes,

This sounds like a great time so count me in.  I'll build the Tamiya 1/35 Flakpanzer Wirbelwind.  I've got my eye on a CH Vorpanzer... it calls to me, so we'll see about that one later.

I'm in!  DML Dicker Max is on the way right now, though I still hope to get a DML Brummbar sometime by Christmas.

So I'll be going with either of those subjects.

dupes your a very nasty man. I have promised myself that after my 251 is finished i will spend the rest of next year building aircraft to get my stash down as its twice as big as my armour one. And i decided that i would be very strict with myself and not be tempted to do anything with tracks.

And now you come along and do this. Angry [:(!]

I have an Ausf J and 4 AA versions of the Pz IV. I will most likely enter one of the later. I will finish my 251 and the two aircraft GB's i am commited to first then get back to you.

I hate you Big Smile [:D]

Hey dupes, I see you've finally got the Pz IV GB going!!Thumbs Up [tup]  I've only got 10 minutes today to spend in the forums, but as soon as I saw this thread I had to respond!  I know my GB participation is suspect these days Disapprove [V] but I promise to get involved in this one as much as I possibly can! (BTW, I haven't forgotten the 251 halftrack GB!) I've got 7 variants of this tank in my stash, but the Tristar Pz IV Ausf. D kit keeps jumping out at me.  Can you please put me down for that one?  It will be my first Tristar kit and I'm eager to work on it. Smile [:)]

Dupes,

I see that the Trumpeter Sturer Emil is in your list. I always thought it was a development of Henschel VK3001 Tiger prototype, not a Panzer IV variant. I guess I am a little confused. If it is really allowed, I might pick one up, either the 1/35 or 1/72 and build it for this. I always thought it was cool.

I also have a 1/72 Dragon Jagdpanzer L/70 that is currently in my poll for the IMS3 GB, but if it does not get chosen, I could build that. I will let you know what I decide.

Dupes,

Count me in for the Trumpeter Bruckenleger.   Never built Trumpeter armor, so this will be interesting.

Funny you mention that, I've had it on my hand-written list with "???" written after it, indicating I needed to do a bit of further research. You are correct, it is indeed NOT a Pz.IV variant, and will be removed shortly! Thumbs Up [tup]

All of you guys should consider yourselves added to the list...even you, Ernest. Wink [;)]

Any suggestions as to how long you'd like to see this run (considering all of '09, even though I dislike GB durations that long) or what you'd like to see for a badge (I'm thinking some sort of escalating badge system based on how many you can complete?) would be highly appreciated! Big Smile [:D]

dupes

No your not, you did this on purpose. I could have resisted anything, even another big cat build. But I never even dreamed anyone would do this. As SMJ said, how can any real armour modeler, especially those that mainly do German, not take part in a Pz IV build.

I will probably go for the Dragon 1/35 Kugelblitz as thats been on the shelf for years and i am dieing for an excuse. But i will 100% confirm once i have caught up.

I would say 9 months is good, till the end of sept. But, if you do decide on the escalating badge, maybe a year would be better.

O no, that means i will have to spend a whole year building Panzer IV's. If my wingy stash doesn't come down, i want to make it clear that it's your fault, ok.

As for the badge, i think it should have a Pz IV in it Big Smile [:D]

Hi,

Looks like I got at least two kits that fits the bill. Both Tamiya, one StuG IV and one PzKw IV, and at least one them I like to join in this GB. I got to figure which kits to join in the IMS3 GB too!

Cheers,

I'm very glad that you guys are all fired up! I was originally planning on doing this later in '09 when some of the other GB's wrapped up, but the interest is there right now, and it looked like someone else might whip out a Pz.IV GB on me. Been thinking about this one for a while, so the time is NOW!

I would love it if this were a "required GB"! I don't know how you could build armor and not want to participate in a big way. Wink [;)]

Ernest - TWO? I'd settle for you finishing just oneLaugh [(-D]

Bish - don't hate me too much, brother. Sad [:(]

I thought that the Sturer Emil didn't belong in this but just wanted to make sure.

This pretty much is a required GB if you build any armor. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Dupes, I have a Taimya 1/48 Panzer IV Ausf J that is semi-started but I would like to tear it down and do some mods to it like zim and some other stuff. Would this be allowed or not. It is never really made clear if the kit must be unstarted or not. I would really like to do a Dicker Max and a Hummel if I am able to as well. My budget and available time might not allow it though.

Just a quick question to all; was there ever a Flammpanzer IV? My references only so a III, Hetzer, and a Char B1 and I think it would be cool to make a Flammpanzer IV.

I'm definitely fired up about this one!  I love the Pz IV and all its variants.  The Pz. IV was the workhorse of the German Panzerwaffe and served from the beginning to the end of the war.  I also believe it was produced in greater quantities than any other German AFV (or at least any other German tank).

I just KNEW you were going to say that dupes!!!Laugh [(-D]  I think I'd also settle for just one!!  BTW, have you decided which version you're going to build?  I think it would be really cool if we could get one entry for each of the Ausfuhrungs, A-J.  That would be something at the end of the GB....to see at least one of each PLUS as many of the variants as possible!!   This GB is going to be SWEEET!!!

I should have made that more clear...this thread is still a "work in progress". Whistling [:-^]

Tell you what, you have a pic or anything so I can see what "semi-started" means? In theory if you're tearing it down to do a full rework I'd think it would qualify, unless you really have a lot done already.

Have seen no references to a Flammpanzer IV...anyone else?

I'm with you on that one! Kind of why I'm holding off to pick a kit to build, want to get as many different variants out there as possible...and I have a couple to pick from in the closet. Heh.

The tough one is going to be the A - no one kits it (to my knowledge) and it's considerable different than the B. Maybe someone with some scratchbuilding experience will jump on it.

A; mostly resin, with PE, maybe Friuls (?).  It's supposed to be a really nice, accurate kit, but it's out of production.  Sometimes it pops up on Ebay.  I almost put a bid in for one last month but was dissuaded by the cost....over $100!!!Shock [:O]  At the time I couldn't justify the cost with so many other versions in the stash, but now with this GB coming up I'm regretting not getting it!Sad [:(]

I won't even attempt to scratchbuild this one....way beyond my skills.  Plus it would take me YEARS to complete it!!Laugh [(-D]

Ernest - let me see if I can come up with a summary of changes to backdate a B to an A...maybe it's not as drastic as I think. I do remember seeing the cupola (which is considerably different) and wondering if one could be had somewhere.

Moose - I'll get you on the list, you glutton for punishment. Wink [;)]

I should have made that more clear...this thread is still a "work in progress". Whistling [:-^]

Tell you what, you have a pic or anything so I can see what "semi-started" means? In theory if you're tearing it down to do a full rework I'd think it would qualify, unless you really have a lot done already.

Dupes,

I have the two halves joined and the turret together with a very sloppy first coat on it. A combination of the paint can nozzle not functioning properly which resulted in a really horrendous first coat of paint and my mistake in ordering zimmerit schurzen makes me want to almost do a complete rebuild of it. Nothing else is painted. The running gear is not touched as well. Some parts have fallen off and I would like to take the halves back apart to do a little work on them inside and out. I would also like to reopen some hatches and do a little more detailing. I would be stripping most of the paint off as well to apply the zim. I can post some pics later tonight if you would still like.

WarHammer25 I don't think there was a Pz IV Flamm, your best online reference would be Achtung Panzer, but i am pretty sure there wasn't.

Dupe's cause i don't hate you bro. I just have the breaking strain of a kit kat and i just can't say no to this one. But i will be joining a bit late on.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so
