Regia Aeronautica GB II (06/15/09 to 06/15/10)

Good grief Aaron and Guy, those beasties are comming along nicely and looking might fine. Dont know if I would have the guts to work with all that resin and hack up a perfictly good kit.

Been making progress on my 88. The canopies gave me a small bit of trouble to get them to all line up, tricky assembly to boot.

All the masking done and off to the paint shop. Did a bit of pre shading and then hit it up with the RLM 65.

Just finished the paint and is drying as we speak. The pre shading went well considering I usually have a heavy hand with the A/B.

I have one quick question for you guys. Just found a review of this kit and laughed all the way through it as he was spot on on all the problems. The biggest is the colour callouts. It calles for the bombs to be painted RLM 65. I know that not right. In the past I think I used RLM 71 but is there an offical colour used.

Looking great Steve. Youu pre-shading looks alot neater than mine but as I found out it really doesnt matter. For me it is in the way you control the paint going over it. Spraying it on a little heavier in one spot and a little lighter in another. To neat and it looks exactly like what it is a darker color sprayed in neat lines under a lighter color. I usally paint my Luftwaffe bombs blackgreen though I am pretty sure they were not all painted that color it look right to me. I think there were some luftwaffe bombs that were painted light blue. Someone posted some pics along time ago but I do'nt remember what type of bomb it was. All of that masking on that canopy scares me! I am looking for the Eduard set for my Promodeller Do 217 E-5. right now.

Thanks SC, I think I normally do them in RLM 70 or something simular. Its pouring snow here today so guess what, I get to work on the bench all day and hope to get a topcoat on. I might even get to work on my 262 or the 177. Gotta luv these days

Steve, the 88 is looking superb. Great job on the pre-shade, it almost looks hand painted on. Excellent stuff. As for the Bombs, I had to check my refs. One of which is this site,

The main bombs that the JU-88 carried were either SC250 or 500. The 500's were, apparantly sky blue but the 250's were either Field grey, sky blue or aluminum over-all. With Yellow stripes on the tail. Have a look on the site. Its a goodun.

The sun is out, the rain starts tomorrow, and there is supposed to be snow down to 1000 feet sunday night, which is about 900 feet up the mountain behind us.

So I took some snappies of the SM.81 as requested.

I also picked up a bottle of ivory paint, MM "Radome Tan". The fusey halves are real beauties, new sprue.

Here's my first multi-kraut monster:

The Revell 1/72 Junkers G-24, in the only scheme offered; Finnish airline Aero O.Y. Actually I really liked the livery. This is a new boxing of an old kit made by VEB Plastikart in the DDR in the 1980's, with floats instead of land(ing) gear. I thought it was an interesting subject when I saw it at the LHS, so I grabbed it. I liked this kit a lot. There's all kinds of minor issues- no interior to speak of, thick trailing edges, but to counter that, how about a tri-motor with floats and watercooled engines?!? A real corrugated cruiser! But is that an open cockpit I see?? With the white towel looking like fresh snow and all, the though of an open cockpit at over 120mph makes me shiver!

Y'all are making me want to build a multi now. To bad I have other more pressing commitments. And the only multi I have in the pile of an AM B-25. Not really an axis plane.

Wow Bondo that Junkers came out great. I just watched the show on the History channel about the Ju 52. All these years and I never payed attention to the fact that the original design was a single engine version floatplane. Now that you posted pics of the Sm 81 I have to have one for sure. That looks like a great kit.

Wow, Bill, Shes a beauty and a worthy addition. The nmf came out beautifully. Top marks your Bondliness. As for the SM.81, that looks like a stunning kit. Ive admired it from afar for a while. It will be interesting to see it built up. Bonus ninja points for it being a Reggie and a multi. As soon as i come across one on my travels...Shes mine.

As for my Ju-290 build, heres a little update on where im at,

A quartet of power eggs, with some nifty PE cooling fans,

Heres the fuselage with the lower wing section attached. There was a little step at the rear that ive filled with Milliput fine,

and ive started on masking the ton of glazing on the bird. I have the eduard masking set for it but that doesnt include the very forward nose section. I spose its too new still,

Working tomorrow, but not till 2pm ish, so i might be able to do some in the morning if i can persuade SWMBO to go shopping LOL,

She's a beast Guy! I am going to assume that one will be hanging from the ceiling when it's done. I love those big boys but I just do'nt have any place to put them when they are done. I have a 1/72 scale B52 that a freind asked me to build a while back but I have'nt made much progress for two reasons. Number one is the old Revell kit is pretty crappy and those huge fuselage seems are going to need tons of attention and secondly it takes up so much room I can not work on anything else at the same time. Keep up the good work there oh fearless leader of the RA GB!

The Condor now has the wings attached and ready for the Nacelle's . Havent been taking many pics as I need a Panorama type camera...

Thanks for the comments guys. I did the preshading by brush and I use Floquil grimy black. It came out pretty good to my eye. Thanks for the website Guy. Think I will play around with the colours. heres where i am right now. top and bottom painted. If it dry enough tomorrow I will begin the splinter camo.

Bill, awesome work on the Corrugated tin can.  Open cockpit... sheesh, that's got to be cold!!! I like the look of that SM.81 too. 

Guy, that build is bringing back a lot of memories for me.  Can't wait to see that new nose attached as mine had the basic standard issue one.

Steve, the Ju 88 is looking great as well! 

SC, the beauty of this kit is the way its manufactured. There are minimal seams to fill, thankfully. The whole top centre section is an insert with glue optional. As mine is going to be a 'Roof Hanger' its all being glued up tight. Even the loading ramp. I would have, and was going to leave the ramp open but the fuse sides are very prominant with loads of ribbing. As i wasnt going to 'rib' the thing. Shes staying shut.

Dont you lot have a similar company in the US? The only prob with Hannants is they take forever to deliver. So im always ordering in advance. Panoramic camera my ar$e. Get those photos up. Ive got a 1/72 condor that i may have to break out. Your 1/48 is pushing me in the right direction.

Steve, the paint is looking fantastic, Seriously. I cant wait to see a splinter on it. Im a sucker for the early german camo's. Heres a question though. The recess on the rear fuselage, whats it for? I think its some sort of radar? If so what colour are you doing it? My JU has one and im not too sure. No colour callouts. The insert piece is clear.

Dave, the kit comes with the early nose as well. Revell have just added the extra sprue for the new nose and a couple of opther doo dads, oh and a new glazing bit.

 Well that is where I got my super secret project from!  The reason is it had to be kept secret because if Guy had realized it was so close to him he would have surely Hijacked it!  Now he will have to find that port hole under the bed again but will have to overcome the barricade of girly mags!

 I only mention it now as my shipping tracker which is very English informed me it has left the country of origin to be delivered by the 11th of Dec.

This my fellow inmates  will be a real challenge!

Thanks for the nice comments guys. Guy to the best of my knowledge it is a radar/directional finder. I am painting it interior colour for the supports then there are two pieces inside, one that looks like a compass ( kinda like spokes on a wheel) and the other on top is to be painted in a leather colour. All of this is topped off with a clear dome piece. There are also two clear pieces further down the fuselage and had no clue what it they are, Ive never seen them on any kit or photo in real life. After a search I have found them with aerial wires comming out of them to the main aerial. Perhaps some of the experts can shed some light on exactly what it is.

Hey, we're back!!!  Looks like we got a bunch of new smileys too.    Honestly don't know what was wrong with the old site and I don't know about you guys but the new site is slower than Ritchie doing a string bag or Frank doing a Spinner!    Why isn't their a laughing smiley anymore.    At least they have a couple of and what's with all this stuff?   Oh well, I'll stop complaining now, at least they have a spell checker now and I don't have to be   I'm off to my little (ie: work bench)

As for the 290. Its going strong. Ive managed to get a fair bit done. Im in the middle of detailing up the U/C legs at the mo. I have a great book on the 290/390 and its invaluable to the detailer in me. LOL.

Great news boys! I got my shiney new digital camera today! 12.1 MP and with the memory card I bought for it I can take up to 45 minutes on high quality video woth it too! I forsee alot more Scott Baio videos in the near future. This thing is sweet!

I hope this new version of our beloved forum works better than it has been. I am definetely not liking this huge banner on the side that takes up 1/3 of the sreen thats full of advertisment. Very disapionting. The smiley selection is slim pickin's too. I do like the spellcheck feature though. Well I have some stickers to put on my 262 so off I go!
