P-400 WIP or why I hate PE!
Posted by satch_ip on Saturday, November 7, 2009 9:27 AM

I get to build inbetween two jobs and a wife and kids so it's slow going.  Been out of the game for a bout 10 years also so my skills are rusty.  I do remember now why I hated PE...

contents

cockpit build with Eduard PE

dry fit

fuselage halves put together with pit

Now I'm back in NY for a week so Nancy will have to sit at home and wait for my return.  Fit was ok, fuselage was a little warped and the instructions weren't quite clear on cockpit assembly placement within the fuselage.  Some of the PE is sooooo ridiculously tiny that I omited it.  Just too small for 46 year old fat fingers and eyes to handle.

I have two weeks off in November so I hope to finish her before Thanksgiving.

Thanks for looking!

Satch_ip Now thats a sweet cockpit you have built there, I do have to agree on some of the PE being just rediculously too small to work with. From the looks of what you have so far I cant tell you ever stopped building. Looking forward to seeing more of it.

Here are the latest pics. I meant to put these up the middle of last week but couldn't find the time.

Front View after Joining

This is the front view after joing the fuselage halves together. The next is a side view.

Side View After Joining

I am working on the engine now and getting the main assembly ready to paint. Speaking of that does anyone have any words of advice on applying Model Master Metalizer paints? I have never used them before so I am reading up on them as much as possible. That's all for now so everyone keep enjoying your builds!

P-400 WIP update
Posted by satch_ip on Monday, November 16, 2009 10:50 AM

I got home from NY to find Nancy waiting patiently on my bench.  I proceded to hadle her all over.

Fuselage and wings are put together.  Significant fit problem with the wing to fuselage joint caused much filing and gap filling super glue. Wing fillets also require filling.  I think the lack of fuselage attachment pins caused a slight missallignment.  Also halves were slightly warped.  It may look ugly now but give me time to fill, sand, polish, and scribe.  I should have her done this week.

Thanks for stopping by.

Coming along a good pace there Satch! I cant wait to see more progess. I can see what you mean by lots of filling and sanding. But it looks like you have things well in hand.

Looking good, Satch.I'm ready to start mine this weekend: Limited by time (my personal time, not the GB time) I'm going with the 1/48 Hasegawa A6M3 type 22. My brief research shows this variant wold have participated in Guadalcanal. I'm thinking these were green (not the bamboo/grey) paint scheme.

Would anyone have pictures of a Guadalcanal A6M3 Zero out there?

Mucker I looked threw one of my books and found pics of them painted both ways grey and green. I only found 1 pic which is of zero crashed on Guadalcanal which is green whitn white circles around the hiros.

P-39Q will have different exhaust stacks, no internal wing guns- they had single podded .50s beneath instead of the twin .30s in each wing, and a 37mm short barrel cannon, instead of the longer 20mm cannon in the nose hub.

The only shot I have in mone of my books that is certainly Guadalcanal show a type 32 in the overall gray scheme. Aside from that it all depends on the point of the campaign, early on they were in the monotone gray, as the battle wore on, the field applied green uppers apeared.

I found this shot of  this A6M captured on Munda, summer 1943, still in the overall gray.

What's with the GB falling to the second page?  Let me bump it with and update.

Primed with Mr Surfacer, underside is Tamiya Sky, mask is picture hanging putty.

Tamiya XF 61 Red Brown

camoed, glossed, decaled, and flated.

I incorrectly glued the wheels so I had two left feet.  Now I am waiting for the True Details wheels and an Eduard canopy mask and I can finish Nancy.  Should be done by this weekend.

Skills are slowly comming back.  I see impatiance as my worst enemy when building.  So many mistakes and mess ups but each project is a learning experience and a chance to improve.
