that is coming along beautifully Satch. Although I will point out that by the time of Guadalcanal, the red centers should have been removed from the national insignias.

As for me, two LHS have not been able to get my PE set... I am gonna try one more shot direct from the manufacturer and if no joy there just finish up without the PE...

Looking Good!

I just wanted to remind everybody that yesterday was the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor that was the precursor to subject of our group build. If there are any PH survivors that reand this post I just want to say thank you for all sacrificed for us that day!

Keep on Modeling!

Here's my contribution to the Guadalcanal GB. Not sure aboutthe markings, but the A6M3 Type 22 did fight at Guadalcanal. It's a 1/48 Hasegawa standard OOB build. The Carpet monster stole a piece or two, so it's not as I'd hoped but here she is, but this is a very nice kit. Having built several Tamiya's, I now know what most of you already know: the Hasegawa kit is a more modern, more detailed kit (although the Tamiya is one of my all time favorite!)

Here she is:

Beautiful Zero Mucker! I think you are right about the period of the markings, but it certaily was involved in the follow up air batles overhead after the Canal was secured! Thanks for partaking in the GB and go ahead and claim your badge!Yes

Nancy has been in my display case for 3 weeks now while I have been away but her 20mm came in after I left so today she is whole.  My first real build after 10 years.  The little Mig was a small warmup.

Here she is!

So at this point we have two US planes and one IJN plane completed so far. Not too bad. We have two months left in the initial (pre deadline extension Black Eye) GB time frame. Guess I better get my destroyer back on the priority line.

Here is my Yugumo as of this evening. I got everything painted gray (Tamiya IJN Gray Sasebo Arsenal) that will need to be painted. Although some small parts are still on the sprues and need to be cleaned up, touched up and then glued on. Anyways, here she is with al major components placed for the pics.

I've shook the San Francisco out and made some headway. Here's the kit:

I'm adding PE ladders, rails and radar.

L'Arsenal 5" and 1.1"guns.

First thing finished are the Seagulls:

Here are some progress pics on the Kate. I know it has been a while but with three other builds and the holidays time slipped away........

Anyway

This is the engine less the cowling. With the cowling:

Next the torpedo

I wasn't happy with the molded on detail for the harness so after reviewing my references I added a piece of brass tube to strengthen the attachment to the AC and some wire and styrene for the harness and release mechanism. Next is the my first coat of Testors Metalizer aluminum:

It is my first try at a natural metal finish so I am taking it slowly (too slowly!!) I am working on how to shade it next. I am going to use a darker shade of metalizer and either shade the panel lines or shade specific panels at random. I am leaning towards darkening the panel lines and see how that looks. Then seal and wash and the bottom will be done. Thats it for now but I am putting all my effort in finishing this one right now so I will probably have more pics after the weekend.

Hey Mucker, I've a photo in the "Squadron In Action" book of a A6M3 Model 22 belonging to the 1st Koku Sentai off the Zuikaku flown into Buin in Nov. of 43. They look to be overall Dark Green with a white fuselage chevron band. I'll try to get a photo up later.

I'm looking for info or a colorplate of the A6M2's belonging to 204th Kokutai stationed at Buin. The photo's I have don't show any markings.

I built that kit last year, and the fit is real nice. None of the fit issues I have heard that the Eduard kit has.

I'm doing the Eduard P-39 alongside the Monogram kit and have to say that the Monogram kit beats the Eduard kit hands down on fit...  "Newer ain't always better" as I like to say...

One more...

I painted it in a mix of Tamiya and Model Master paints.. The Dark Green and Neutral Gray are  Tamiya and the tan is Model Master Dark Tan.   After I painted it, I usd a thin mix of light Testor's Light Tan and sprayed several coats of what was basically tinted thinner until I got the right "Fade"..

I then used pastels in various places, like the exhaust and wing streaking..  Next, "Finishing Touches" and the detail painting, like the Nav lights, guns, struts, wheels, yadda, yadda, yadda...

Why, Tankee, Stik...  I need to change the fade on the dark green though... I don't like it... I'll probably hit with some pastel to lighten it better...  I also gotta fix that frushinlinger out-of-register wing decal...

Nice job Hans, looks way better than mine.  We should be parked next to each other.

Did you say your Grandfather served on the Canal?  If so what unit?

Thanks man... Yours looks just fine..

Did you say your Grandfather served on the Canal?  If so what unit?

No, it was my Uncle, John  Thompson... He was a P-39 driver in the 67th FS on the Canal... My P-400 depicts his as best as I can find anything on it..  I used the stock s/n and a/c number as  don't have any idea what his bird looked like, other than the "Fighting Cocks" insignia (Bet I get a "Report Me!" on that last word) on the door..

Here's the only pic I've ever seen, and this was on a website that a friend of mine sent me a link to... I had no idea about his war "escapades", he never talked about them...

You did a beautiful job, your P-400 is gorgeous, I only hope my B1b lancer or B25 come out half as nice as your great job.

Hans, do you have the book Guadalcanal: The Island of Fire  Reflections of the 347th Fighter Group? There are several citations for Lt John Thompson in the index.

No, I don't... Like I said, he never talked about it... I only recently found out about his involvement at Bloody Ridge.
