Frosty - thanks. yeah, I think Sherm deserves alot of credit for moderating this little event. A couple days I noticed him posting at three different times of the day.

I don't know about that Ron P, but thanks for saying it
Sherm - thanks, I will get on that ASAP
nmayhew - the detail was great, the fit was great - I just glued two pieces together to make one straight piece - then used a small amount o f heat from a hair dryer to get the shape. Only thing was - with a sherman there is little sag - made it hard to glue the last joint together
Dwight, fieldgrau, boybuddho, and RAF - thanks. I did have a great time being part of this

Thanks guys.
Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war.
See ya when I get back.
Ron, I should be picking up some new besaque's for my 14thc. harness and looking at the progress of a new sugarloaf bascinet. A firend of mine is doing the mainn work and I'm doing all the brass applique for the nasal, visor and vervelles.
BTW, has anyone else thought to go through the archive of this build and compile all the build and kit info into a reference book. I have begun going back and all the posts that dealt with build info, pics, and kit info regarding the Shermans we chose and am putting it together for my own reference library. All in all, so far it is a pretty good source of info. I may go back and do it for the panther build and the Tiger build.

Renarts, That sounds super! (the armor and the book idea).
I took a look through my 70th armor reference pics for a post D-Day M4 and the only marking I found on any of the tanks was 'Joe Peckerwood', who was a little turtle, standing on a globe, wearing a tanker helmet and holding a round under one 'arm' while saluting with the other. No company, unit or vehicle numbers, no stars. (HQ vehicles are covered with bumper numbers as well as 'Joe'). Since I painted Joe on the side of my tank last night, the rest of the markings should be easy eh? I did put an air recongnition star on the back deck!
BTW: a 'Peckerwood' is old slang for a poor white person, I believe (I've been one all my life and never even knew it!)

Hey guys & gals! Thanks for the generous comments!! Although I haven't posted a whole lot in this topic, I cannot express how much I have appreciated the pics of everyone else's builds. I continue to be amazed at the paint jobs, but the scratch building is really impressive too.
Frosty, the 'texture' you might see is all part of the kit. Nothing special done from my end (other than wash, oils, and pastels...) PS I'm particularly enjoying your pics and progress!
Build22, I really like your paint job. The cargo and 'rope' look very realistic!! Nice job
I just realized (from looking at the pics) that I didn't drill out the barrel?? I guess I'm not completely done after-all... I assume there was some sort of antenna on these things, so I'll have to flip back through the previous posts to see if there's a pic of where it goes... (my lack of knowledge/experience with armour is really starting to come out now...)
Still want to build some sort of small base for the kit, but I doubt I'll get that done in 3 days...
Cheers!!

Totally off topic trivia:
Peckerwood comes the old logging industry. A peckerwood was a worker (a "pecker") that stripped the bark off of the trees before they went into the saw mills. It was a job that required a lot of strength and stamina, but they had a reputation for not being the brightest - and they were probably "white-trash" as well.
Back to modelling!

gnsnow, WOW! That's a super piece of info. I'd bet most of the old guys in the 70th Tank Battalion Association don't even know that one. I was going by their definition. I'll forward that to them. So, I guess in many ways I'm still a 'peckerwood'! LOL.
My best friend from the 70th died this past year. He sure was a fine person.

Fantastic Progress by everyone so far. There are some really great looking Sherman's out there.
Robert, if nothing else, you have definitely caused a lot of fine modeling of the Sherman to take place!!!
Just to show that I haven't fallen off the face of the earth! (I've been building a BARV!!!!)
Here is a picture of the latest progress.
And here's another
Now all I need to do is drybursh (a bunch), get the pastels after it, and get the tracks on. At this pace, I should make the final date.
As usual, constructive comments are wanted and welcome!

well, I got a digital camera camera and now I'm just waiting for this field telly to dry, so i can put it on. then I noticed one spot that needs snow, then I'll take some "good" pictures.
|

Build, Latch very nice work guys. I still think the BARV was actually something out of the old TV show Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons!
Need batteries for my camera, so I'll post the prepaint pics of the Achilles soon. Still redoing the 17 pounder shells, but I can finish everything else and just leave the hull separate for now (the beauty of the M10/Achilles hull is that it hangs over the lower hull).
|
|
yep, I am not completely attached in case i need to take the hull off to install that smoke generator. I am finished and pics are on the way to robert!!!

SITE UPDATE
Coming in fast and furious now !!!!!
Final pics have been added for both RAF120 and Build22.
New pics of M1AbramsRules M10 have also been added.
Latch - your "Ship of the Line" looks fantastic. You certainly haven't been slacking out there.
My progress - slow but sure even if work keeps getting in the way.
Ram - just finishing the camo netting, a little drybrushing, mud and pastels and she's done.
Firefly Ic - just finishing up the indy tracks, a little netting, drybrushing, mud and pastels and we can call her done too.
Happy Modelling and God Bless
