ME-262: Reich Defender II 10/09-7/10

Dirk,  I'm really looking forward to your build up on that one.  It's a short run kit so some flash is to be expected.  

Progress update.  I've done a mist coat of RLM 76 over the mottle to tone it down and blend it in and I've got the decals on.  The decals are old (as is the kit) and a little yellow but I'm hoping the flat coat will make it less noticeable.

I really like the look of the paint job. If either of mine come out HALF as good I'll be very very happy.

 Wow Dave, I am well drooling over your paint scheme... What method did you use to get the mottle look?

Yea it tis sad that I am going to loose my brown jug.. We've been to hell n back.. Never let me down that's for sure..

 It was her fault yes, but her excuse was that the sun blinded her and the Police officer actually took her word.. So it fell under no fault insurance yet her insurance will be given me $$.. And the hunt begins... lol

Mike, so sorry to hear about the damage to your vehicle (been there myself, as I'm sure most of us have at one time or another - mine was 3K in damage and I wasn't even in the car! It was parked at work). The main thing is nobody was hurt.

Outstanding work everyone! I should be back to the bench by the weekend if the Yanks take care of business tonight - been a bit distracted by the ALCS, and there's no cable hookup yet in the workroom.

Well thanks to all your misplaced faith in my abilities, ive attacked the 262 again. I decided to bin the long slat inserts and replaced them with a large pice of styrene,

after the glue had gone off i trimmed it to size,

while i was waiting for the glue to dry, i plugged a small gap at the inner wingroots,

when the glue had gone off i went about making the holes for the runners to the slat. These lined up with the divots on the lower wing,

then the arms,

at this point i was fairly happy with the results, so i went on and attached the nacells. Due, I think, to the lack of location holes and that id removed loads of sty from the wing, the nacelles needed a little pressure to close the top gap,

Guy -  send me the pre shrunk resins, I will hack and slash my wings to fit them ...(just kidding )  Hey that is outstanding  scratch building. Must have to do with the moustache..  I knew that little set back would not hamper your progress..

I really like the looks of those clamps - what brand are they and please post a pic of whole clamp ..

I would have sent you the shrunken bittys, Lord Moustachio, but im afraid i chopped them up. I was going to use thier links, but decided against it. As for the clamps. I bought them today from my Local Hobby craft. Theyre called 'Berna Modelclamps'

They are also cheap as chips. Ill have to post a pic of the old flavour saver, its coming along swimmingly, with you as my inspiration.

Butz, sorry about your truck getting all beat up, hope it all works out and glad nobody was hurt.

Dave that mottle looks fantastic, I know it takes a lot of skill and practice but what airbrush do you use?

Guy, great workaround on the iffy flap problem and thanks for posting those walkaround links, they will prove very useful when I get going .

Dave the mottle on the 262 looks great. The mist coat really ties it all together. Fantastic work.

Guy see we knew since you have become even more manly with you new flavor saver you would be able to fix you slat problems with no dificulties. very well done.

Dirk - Gonna be nice to see another cannon! I saw the Dragon kit online in 1/48 and thought about it for a second but didn't want to show up Guy so I left it alone.

Dave- Forgot to comment on your 262, and IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT!!!  I can see the difference with/without the overspray.  I like it , I like it a lot!

Guy- Great save on those slats!  And just in time too, Big Boy.  Now I am not gonna use the CMK ones I have.  Wait a tick- maybe I'll box the kit and the resin up and send it to the UK and have Wingus and Dingus do their majic on it and send it back.

Bondo, cheers for the kindlies. Im a bit concerned about the rudder as its warped pretty bad.Im going to have to use the old hot water to see if its salvageable.

Hi again, just a small update, or as i like to call it a Frankdate (Not seen much yet Daywaster..err...walker)

As i mentioned in the previous post, the rudder was fairly warped,

Heres my method of straightening it (By this you can conclude it worked LOL). 1stly i taped the rudder to a straight edge. In this case a paintbrush handle. I also had a wonky LE slat,

As the rudder was quite thick, i place a thin strip of styrene between the paintbrush handle and the rudder,

Next up i boiled the kettle and poured out a cupfull. I left it standing for about a minute and then dunked the paintbrush in it. I left it in the cup for about 5 or 6 seconds,

Ta daaaaaa,

Lovely jubbly and now the gratuitous 'Mock up shot',

Did you see id attached the nose. Guess what...Not a good fit, but i was pretty sure a cup of hot water wouldnt rectify the prob. Sandpaper it is LOL.

Now let's see, what are the advantages of using Resin ?  Toxic Dust, Parts that are broken, warped or dont fit at all... Am I missing something here ?

Guy -  You know I am just giving you some aggravation.  Nice job of fixing the wonky part.  Looks like your back on track and no doubt you will be springing an amazing paint scheme on us soon.

Nice fix there Guy. Were any of the resin bits you purchased not defective. Seems like you got a load of crap instead of some nice resin goodies that you expected. I am definetely puttiing them on my list of resin stuff not to buy. Makes you really miss Meteor products. How are you going to have tea if you have a rudder in the tea cup?

Thanks a lot, I just shot a mouthful of coffee out of my nose on that one!  Yep, I might hold the record for dragging out a Tamiya kit build.  The FAA Corsair I am working on was started in August...

Thanks so much for the B-day wishes! They worked as I am all better and going back to work tomorrow night! Had a med change that Guy mentioned and it was a seizure med generic name Gabapentin. Lowest dose 100 mg not for seizures but injured nerve related pain. For once it worked very quickly!  Like a headache fading with an aspirin it all went away so quick after suffering for so long( since 20 July) I was afraid it wouldn't last but it has and things are very well!  Thanks again for the thoughts , prayers and well wishes and worries! I think that says a lot for the fellows here!

Now before we get all chumey and teary eyed I should say I am amazed at Guy's resourcefulness yet again!  Just when you think he may have met his match he springs back with some clever solution and amazing results!  Inspires me to try and push things myself!

 Again thanks for the B-day wishes!  44 years old and still able to intercept a soccor ball pass from any young english whipper snapper! I remember when Guy hit the big 40 although the stash makes him look more like FRank's age. 

Frank? Oh yeah he has a B-day coming up!  the 30th so I am 10 days older than him! Look a bit more worn as he holds the secret to  the Flannel of youth!

Sarge!!!  Good to hear you are on the mend and going back to work...  er... maybe that last part ain't so exciting but I'm sure your bank account will appreciate it. 

So what's with the pictures of the fruit (second set of photos not the first set)?  I would think rule #6 in that last photo would be an obvious one but what does a Northerner know besides don't try to catch a Grizzly.
