ME-262: Reich Defender II 10/09-7/10

Hi all, great work happening as always -- Guy that scratchbuilding and correction work on the resin is top stuff, it's proper craftsmanship!

More WIP shots soon, I have the nose gear bay and cockpit pretty much done, which means I'll be joining the fuselage shortly. The wing is assembled, a few minor details and I can drop one assembly into the other, then add the tails and the main structure will be done.

Help! I need some painting advice! I've got all the assemblies cut, cleaned and push fit together, I just am not sure about the color call-outs Tamiya gives me.

 I want to use Model Master enamels to paint my bird. I'm thinking Anthacite Gray for the cockpit, RLM 02 Grau for the landing gear, and Steel for the inside of the wheel wells.

 What color should the interior of the gun bay be? Tamiya's instructions say Aluminum, but shouldn't it be 02 Gray? What color are the chutes leading from the guns?

Any advice will be most appreciated.

Frank, don't sweat the fact it takes you over a year to build a Tamiya kit.

At your age you can't afford to rush things!

Cosmic, late war Luftwaffe aircraft like the 262 often didn't play by the rules, so areas like wheel & gun bays were often left unpainted to save time and materials.

Think the 66 is a safe bet for the pit, with black for the feed chutes in the gun bay.

I've seen 262s with their gear doors in 76 both inside and out!

 Using Model Master paints a dark gray or Panzer Gray color will work for the  pit and the Gun bays. Rlm 02 should be the primary color for things inside the wheel wells and inside of the gear doors. Ok with the gear as long as you get the silver on the springy shock parts.  Aluminium or steel wouldn't seem right for the inside of the wheel wells. Just for picking out details. The Chutes are exit chutes for the expended brass/ linkage of the 30mmm rounds. They lead out exit holes in the bottom of the nose. A grayish color with a metal/ steel wash works well to give them the beat up look from being forced in and out during maintenance.

 Anthracite I am thinking is a metalic kinda coal color?  Just find a dark gray for the pit and gun bay I'd say maybe the Anthracite for the chutes and see how it looks?

 Ah oranges and Bannanas!  Fruit growing in the back yard.  The Oranges are wild in the forest and the Bannanas grow up like weeds. Just thought they were cool!

 I guess I should stick with the beach?

Hi again, Im now after some help if poss. It seems that most 262's didnt have torque links (The scissor bits) on the nose leg. Also the nose leg swivelled at the oleo. This brings me to my problem. The U4 nose leg, twist and turns like a p40. So the wheel can lie flat in the wheel well.

From what ive gleaned from reference pics and pictures of completed Dragon kits, it HAS a torque link and to make matters stranger, its mounted side on?

Pictures of the nose leg are fairly short in supply, do you know of anymore?

Guy - from what I have read that was because that huge cannon took up so much space that was the only way the tire would fit.

I have not seen any pics as they are a rare as loose change around here at the shack.  Just use your modelers license . Its pretty hard to see up in there anyway so dont go to detail wacky.

Nice vids you posted, I got the eye from Teach as she thought I was watching vids like Aaron referenced..

Thanks Karl. I meant to ask about the inside of the gear doors as well, but I forgot. Much appreciated.

Thanks for the tips sfcmac, especially the bit about the ammo chutes. I knew what they were for, it just didn't occur to me that they would probably take a beating in service.

 Anthacite grey is Anthrazitgrau (RAL7016). It's a kind of dark blue grey, but not as dark as Panzer Dark Grey.

Well thats what i thought, but with all the pics ive gone through, it seems more didnt than did,

This last one is one of the rebuilt flying ones, so there can be no question of the torque link being removed. Now thats got you thinking, ill bet,

Guy-Nice fix on those leading edge slats and thanks for the great vids.

Since the my daily workshift (1500 to 2300, not enough time to do anything but eccentials when I get up) & weather (Typhoon that cannot make up its mind on where to go, now a tropical storm dropping a ton of water ) are conspiring against me, I decided to break sprue and try to detail the Tamiya bird up a lil since there is no way I can throw paint anytime soon.

Useing the pics of Seans & Guys birds (PE & scratch goodies) as reference, I did my best to copy some of what i saw.

I noticed that on Seans Resin parts(pg 19) there was alot of stuff I could add.Drilled and inserted wire, Tamiya tape straps, Plasticard boxes and Wire for the lines.

I seperated the Hyd tank,blowdown bottle and hyd pump to get them in a correct position. Added more wire & plastic.

I had to add some card to make the covers for the wires coming out the tub. Guy I also got a really good reference from your build on where the wires run. Guy the Vid you posted today also gave me pics to work on the snakepit on the other side. It still a WIP.

Please tell me what ya think. In real life I think it looks pretty darn good. Next is scratching the seatbelts and wiring the tub interior.

Hi:

I originally posted this model on the aircraft sub forum, and some of you were very kind invinting me to this GB! And what a GB! I haven't scrolled through all the pages yet, but the builds I've seen are already making me wnat to start another 262!

My model is a Revell 1/72 Me-262 A1-a/U3 (photo-recon). I'm using the decal sheet provided with the kit (these decals aren't the best, but are usable and with a thin film, which disaperes and fuses with the paint job after beeing cleared over), to depict "White 2", belonging to 1./NAGr 1, during the last months of WWII.

I added some detail to the cockpit (only some levers and PE seat belts from Eduard) and to the wheel weels (these were originally closed, which besides beeing wrong, hided the neat details molded on the out side of the cockpit tub).

I also corrected some problems on the reagion behind the canopy

Every thing fitted nicely, only using some putty here and there

After a primer coat, the camouflage was applied and cleared with gloss varnigh (to ease the decal aplication)

After clearing it again with gloss varnish, oil colors were used to add some weathering (not completed yet) and everything was sealed under a flat clear coat. This is it's present state

Jason, your scratchbuilding work is very impressive. Have you dry fitted the tub in there yet? With all my resin stuff i put in, i had to put a small chamfer on the top of the boxes in order to get them to fit. Luckilly it doesnt show at all. If i could do the work that you have, id bin the resin for sure.

Marco, The recon plane is looking superb. Nice paint. Have you got another 262 that your planning?

Frank cut me a Great Deal on his patented stand. Since the Resin Wheels were going to take such a bite out of my wallet  - He offered me half the setup for $279.99 (when I get flush again I will have to purchase the base)

This is where the Mono 262 progress stands..

Onward with the battle. Sure hope those resin wheels get here soon..

Ive been looking at mine for a couple of hours. Finished off the engine cowlings and fitted the alerons. I might even get some primer on tomorrow for the 1st round of sand, repeat, sand, repeat, sand repeat...you get the gist,

Great work all around guys! There are some really nice builds going on here. I have started on my 1/72 Revell B-1a/U1. This is a nice little kit with plenty of detail.

The only detail I added to the pit was some wiring to the IP.

I also opened up the main gear bay to show off the bottom of the cockpit.

Jason- I was just marvelling over your Hellcat over at the FAAGBHQ, and now this!  Incredible is the only thing I can say.  I am loving this one.

Marco- , glad to have you here!  Your -262 is looking very good indeed, can hardly believe it's 1/72!   You should be very happy with how it is coming along.   Please, feel free to start another one here as we would all love to see it!

 Sean what kinda news is there on the wheels?  Were the kit one's that poor?  I am just a poor artist seking truth , light and energy!  Maybe some sexy halloween outfits for the wife as well.

 I was thinking of going trick or treating as Guy this year.  Can't get the mask right though. ANy suggestions?
