70th Anniversary Battle of Britain GB - 2010

Jeremy I'm going to jump on board with the others here, I have seen photos of two color mottling but it's always been mottle blob 1 is color A and mottle blob 2 is color B, I've never seen two tone mottling.  I thing the artist who drew up the instructions used a little artistic licence to show a feathered edge to the mottle.

Spike & Frank sorry to hear about your paint jobs, I've only had to do that once before and it was a real pain.

I sprayed the splinter on tonight and hopefully I can work on the mottling tomorrow. I'm itchin' to unmask the rest of it!

Jeremy your paint job is looking sweeeet I'm sure it will be decal time soon. As regards my Spifire I did the suggested Tamiya mix for the dark earth and it didnt look correct to me so off it all came, I've redone the sky and hope to do the dark earth this week, Frank it a shame you had to strip your F16 but it was kinda nice to know I wasnt the only one .

Thanks for the compliments guys!   I'm not the greatest at it, but painting is my favorite part of the build.

It's 71/02 Satch. The 71 looks alot darker over 02 but when its under 70 it looks really light... deceiving.

PS, not trying to be a paint Nazi, just interested.  It just goes to show that peoples perception of color depends a lot on ambient lighting and the method of reproduction.  Scale model representations of colors formulated and applied under war time conditions over 60 years ago are problematic at best.  Although RLM color schemes are some of the most documented historical examples we have, what those colors look like one's model is wide open to interpretation. 

As previously stated, your application of the pigments suspended in liquid medium is top shelf!

It's Model Master enamel. I thought I was just seeing things or maybe used the wrong color but when I compared it to the landing gear legs and guts of a few of my German birds, it's the same color. Maybe the MM enamels are off... I figured more of a grey-green color. I know that my PollyScale acrylic RLM colors are off compared to the MM enamel RLM colors, so I try and stick to one brand of paint per build.

I used MM enamel 70/02 on the wings.  It must be the lighting in our photography or the digital cameras themselves.

Would love to see them side by side in person.  Then again mine would probably pale in comparison.  Great job so far!

I don't know Satch... that's a great looking Messerschmitt you have there.   I definitely like the 70/02 combo better.

Sorry to be posting so much but i've been moving right along here. Mottle is on and while I'm not completely happy with it, I like it enough to leave it alone. Looks about right and that's good enough for me.

I really like the white.

At least it's not brown! Jeremy, as with the Regia camo, there is no end to the combos that can be made and yours looks great!!!! A good change from the more common yellow noses.

I put on the decals and I'm doing the stenciling now but I'm not sure if the white areas should have the stencils or not. In other words, would the white have been sprayed over the stenciling? I would appreciate any help on the matter.

Jeremy I saw a pic on the cover of Restored Warbirds, an Air Progress Magazine special YEARS ago that had a relatively close view of the nose of an Emil with a yellow nose and distinctly remember seeing the stencils on the yellow. After all, they are stencils, they can quickly be reapplied where pertinent information is needed. HTH! btw she is really looking good now!!!!!! Getting her own personality now!!

Jeremy I like that paint job. enjoying everones WIP pics For me life going way fast and build time a little slow. I rebuilt the gun turret on the Avro Anson. I have two of these kits and you can see in the pic a big difference in the kit vs, scratch one. The Falcon vacuform canopy looks better but it is paper thin I cant mask it so I will try 1/32" chartpac tape for the frame and leave it black. hope you all like my work so far.

Nomad, good luck with the Vac form turret I'm sure it will turn out looking magnificent. 

You probably already know this I'm sure, but better safe than sorry.  You can make vac form canopies a lot easier to handle by filling them with Blu Tack to give them some extra structure.

Jeremy the whole paint scheme is turning out to be a real ey catcher, nice job.  By the way what color is the spinner on that 109?

Thanks Mike! If I get any overspray when painting like that, I'll give a it a quick wet sanding with some 800 grit. Just a light rubbing with the sandpaper and it all goes away.

Mobious - Thanks for the props on the masking job! Like I mentioned above, if I get those darned paint ridges, I give it a light wet sanding with the 800 grit. Takes 'em right down.

Jeremy the nose bits are looking great!! Not your average 109 colors and i really like it!!!

I had been kicking an idea around for many years now and finally have reached a point with my skills that I think i will try something I haven't seen before in any scale. Somebody can shoot a pic too me if I am wrong btw. Here's the plan. I recently bought an old Hasegawa 1/72 Viggen (any ideas yet?) and have always loved the look of that plane in the Swedish splinter camo. Was looking at pics of a few yesterday and thinking bout them in between work breaks and I believe I have come up with a technique that seems good in theory to hopefully pull it off(pardon the pun) I would call it Progressive masking. Same principle of doing painted on national markings but not on top of each other. Does this sound mad or intriguing????
