I went for it and ground both the engine and cowl and like how it looks. the view from behind the cowl looks like the real plane. This plane is turning out the way I wanted it to. I wanted to try some new technics and improve my skills. It is not a contest quality model but will look nice on my shelf I hope Big Smile

She looks great with the paint job, Nomad! Yes  The engines look at home in their cowls. Looks like you had to do alot of grinding to hollow out those cowls. Nice job!

Very nice work Nomad.  It's always good to see something than the usual 109 or Spit in the BoB GB.

I made some progress the past two days-painted & Futured.  Masking was a combination of utilizing the Tamiya template w/rubber cement (didn't work as well as planned), 3M Blue Painters tape (ok, but not my favorite) and finally some Silly Putty-the Silly Putty was the best method and I'll use it the next time I build a Spitfire.  There are a couple of flaws in the paint/masking, but it'll pass this time.  Close enough for government work.....Wink

With a little luck, I hope to have the decals on by Monday pm, Futured again by mid week and an oil wash by next weekend.  I may do a bit of pastel weathering.....or not....wait & see....

Looking good so far Bob! I have yet to try the silly putty masking method.

Well... I have finished. Here she is in all her glory. The only extras added to the kit are stretched sprue brake lines. Hope you enjoy...

Any constructive criticism more than welcome.

Excellent work Jeremy, Nomad and Bob!

I'm just getting back into the hobby after a long break. The builds here have really inspired me and here's where I'm at with my Airfix Spitfire and Bf109 (both 1/72). First the pride of Supermarine and just added some detail to take the bare look off the cockpit. Won't see most of it when it's closed up...

?action=view¤t=Img006 1.jpg

And same with the 109...

?action=view¤t=Img008 1.jpg

Painted and ready to close up, with some rib detail for the tiny wheel wells. Bit of a goof on the cockpit colour for the Messer but that got changed before they were glued!

?action=view¤t=ScrambleGB002.jpg

?action=view¤t=AirfixBoBGB002.jpg

The Spitfire will be built wheels up, just after lifting off the ground so put the Airfix pilot is in his seat, complete with harness from kitchen foil. Just need to pick out his goggles and he's done.

?action=view¤t=ABoBGBSpitfire3.jpg

In this pic, you can see the corrected interior colour for the 109. Also added belts from foil, and a cockpit fuel line (not seen here) This one will be displayed with some figures from the Revell Luftwaffe Pilot and Groundcrew set..

?action=view¤t=ABoBGBBf1093.jpg

?action=view¤t=ABoBGBBf1094.jpg

They're not the tidiest of builds and I know I'll never get to contest standard but I'm enjoying them and that's the main thing for me. Just wish I hadn't committed to building the Airfix Defiant!!!!

Thanks for looking and appreciate your comments.

Best wishes,

Dermot

WHAT A BEAUTY! You've done a superb job, this plane looks ready to fly! Lovely airbrushwork, flawless decal application, rigged and carbon-stained -- sweet! This is Tamiya's E-3? I built one for the '08 edition and it was a joy, i look forward to doing another.

Thanks again fellas!

Thunderbolt - Thanks for the praise... glad you like it. The kit is Hasegawa's E-4/7 offering and it's not too shabby. I've built many late model Hasegawa 109s but I've never built the Tamiya 109 so I will have to get one to compare. I hear it's a nice kit.

Ah, the Hase!  have a couple of their Es in the stash, I must give them a whirl. Yep, the Tamiya just falls together, the sort of kit that spoild you for others. I'm doing a Fujimi F-4 at the moment and while the detail is nice (if not consistently accurate) I must say it's the most filler I've used on anything in years...

I just picked up the Hasegawa Galland E-3 for $25 at my LHS.  That makes 5 Emils in my stash.

Decals on.....worst Tamiya decals I've dealt with......thick and some are two part-white background then the decal overtop.  I really think that maybe the white background wasn't necessary.  Even with liberal doses of Solvaset & Future, I have silvering.  Oh well, next time I'll either try to find aftermarket decals or paint the white background.  Hopefully I can hide the imperfections with some weathering.

That's some huge lettering and roundels on the fuselage Bob! Surprise Almost finished and looking good. I don't see any silvering of the decals from my seat.

Thanks Jeremy.  The silvering is on the wing walk stripes.  More noticeable up close.  Same with the roundels-the blemishes can be 'hidden' by creative photography.  I knew that the Tamiya decals would be challenging, but having one on top of the other compounded the problem.  And I didn't add a layer of Future to the white background before adding the colored roundel.  That may have helped.

I looked for aftermarket decals prior to the build, but couldn't find any.  Oh well, there's always next time.....

WHAT?!?!?!  Take it from us, this one is meant for the reader's gallery!  Spiffy build there my friend, love it!  That white nose really stands out, think I gotta do one like that myself.  HORRIDO!!!

Bob- You are really trucking with that Spit, awesome stuff!  I know what you mean about the Tamiya decals.  They are thick enough to wallpaper my shop with.  YIKES!  Next time, try the roundels by Xtradecal from the UK.  Great decals, and thin too.  Then again, every decal sheet is thin compared to Tamiya's LOL.

Thanks for the tip Frank-I checked with the usual suspects for decals (Squadron, Great Models, etc.) and didn't find anything.  I'll have to check out the Xtradecal option.

Bob that spit is really coming along!!!!! Like Jeremy said I can't see any silvering!!! But, if YOU know it's there than I know it bothers you. I know you will disguise them well. Looking GREAT!!!!Toast

Everone all is done on the Aro Anson. The last Items are the worst sometimes. The turret made me want to give up I crushed the top of it trying to get the 1/32 pinstriping on but future to the rescue and it looks OK. Bang Head I would like to thank everone who encouraged me along the way and I have learned alot from all of you. I have a fairey Fulmar to build and will post WIP pics. Wont be able to start it for a month or so. Hope you enjoy Big Smile
