Great work so far everbody. Special cudos to Suppressionfire on the medal and great paint job Gamera. That is one ofthe most realistic I have seen in a while.

I will be posting some pics early next week for my two builds. Iam in the middle of a 262 build for the Reich Defender II GB and up agianst the deadline on that one. But since mine are already started I will put some photos of the work to date.

Again keep up the good work and happy modeling!

Good evening everyone,

A quick update to pass along on the Eduard Bf-109E1.  So far the kit is going together quite well with no fit issues at all.  To the front office we go:

Here is the pilot's right-hand panel.  All colors are from Vallejo: Model Air #044 for the base color (tints and tones) and their Model Color line in other places.

and the left-hand side

It was at this point that I encountered a minor issue - I wanted to use the injection molded instrument panel as it allows me to maintain a consistent color (and weathering) composition within the cockpit and I prefer the three dimensional effect.  However, while the molded panel is accurate insofar as the placement of the instruments is concerned, the size of the bezels is understated to the point of being useless.  Ugh!  Scratch building a new panel would put me outside the time-limit of the GB so I opted for plan B:

This is the lower portion of the instrument panel rendered in Eduard's beautiful color photo-etch.  As a compromise I added T-handles to represent the landing gear retraction/ extension and emergency extension controls.

and another view from the top looking down:

My attempt to photograph the cockpit was futile; half of the subject was in focus while the other half was blurry, so I've elected to post a photo of it at a later point.

Thanks for checking us out and Happy Modeling!

Not a prob Patton there's plenty of time in this build for finishing.

I actually pulled out the Spitfire last night as well as the Eduard zoom set I've got for it and discovered a little issue.  The fact that some of the PE is nicely colored green is great but the color bears no resemblence to the Model Master RAF Interior green that I use.  No biggy and at least I don't have to prime the parts.

Sorry FastEagle I had my little update in edit for so long this morning I missed seeing your post come through.

Great looking work on the cockpit particularly the shading and highlights they look great.  Btw did you mean that you used various lighter and darker shades of Vallejo 44 to obtain the weathered look?

Cheers

Cheers everyone,

Before I talk about the -109, let me wish your World Cup teams good luck in the tournament (I hope to watch both matches tomorrow).

Okay, back to the subject at hand.  Using the airbrush, I applied Vallejo's Light Grey Green to the interior as a base coat and followed it with mix of 50% white + 50% base color to pick out the highlights and 30% black and 70% base coat in the shadow's and recesses.  The remaining details were picked out with a brush.  To complete the process, I applied a several coats of highly thinned acrylic paint to blend all the colors and soften the color transitions.  I wish my photography/ lighting skills were a bit more polished and conveyed more of what I see with the naked eye (I am working on this!).

As for the color itself, I agree that it looks "sandy" in my photographs.  I attribute this in part to the "warm" lighting I used to take the photo's but there is no denying that Vallejo's RLM 02 matches the color of the molded plastic very closely.   I erred in not adequately compensating for "scale effect" which, I believe, would have given the subject a grayer tone, one that matched my reference photo's a bit closer.

Sometimes one must enjoy a pint and contemplate these things.  I'm off to the 'fridge.

Many thanks for the kind feedback and observations.  I'm really enjoying the quality of the work on this GB!!

Great work FastEagle!

I use Vallejo paint on figures with a brush but I've yet to try it to airbrush it so far.

FastEagle, outstanding paint, I really really like the finish and look you achieve so keep up the good work Toast and enjoy the world cup (after Saturday Wink).

Julez72, sorry it was a few pages back but splendid 110 office, cant wait to see more.

I'm slowly getting my Spit back to where I'll be able to post some progress shots, I pretty much took the whole thing apart so it looks a bit untidy at the mo.

Cheers everyone....

Hey Fasteagle thanks for the tips with highlights and shadows Yes

I know exactly what you mean about colors appearing completely different in photos than in real life.  I've posted shots here with a Spitfire looking like it was base coated in tan rather than Dk Earth.

Boy, who started the thread a couple months back about not building in the summer months?  I've had a slow go of it for the past several weeks on my 109 .  I must say that reading along with this GB has kept me inspired to keep plodding ahead.  I've not posted any pictures since completing the cockpit several weeks ago, but I am now pressing through a tough camo paint job.  I've picked up a little steam this week and hope to have something posted here soon.  Thanks to you all for the great work and meaningful information in this thread.  With your help I've kept up the work.  Rick.

Rick don't sweat not posting I understand that other things get in the way of modeling especially for you guys going through summer now Cool

Jules you have an excellent memory, it was a Spitfire from the 05 BoB GB, I trully didn't think anyone would remember.

Cheers

I have been a "bad boy" and did not do any modelling for a long time. My Hurricane and Me 109 are at the pre-paint stage, still a lot of time to get there.

My excuse: I just got my license Propeller

I am not sure what will be next: more modeling time or more flying time Wink

Chaps,

Oh how I love Gunze Aqueous paints, they go on a dream and take me half the time to clean up, I'd have finished weeks ago if I hadn't switched brands.

Anyway before I spray the green I have a question, is this Bob period scheme Hard edged or soft edged? Its just the regular Spitfire Dark Earth/Green camo, if it should be hard edged I may try masking with Mr Masking Sol R. Hope someone can help.

Cheers everyone...

As I understand it they used mats to apply the paint, so it was nearly a hard edge but not quite.  The colors blend just a bit.

Mike I totally agree with you on Gunze paints they are my primary weapon of choice these days with only a few small exceptions like MM RAF interior green which I love.

In terms of camo it's as John said, pieces Spitfires and Hurricanes were built as various locations and pre-painted with rubber mats (masks) to a ensure uniform camo once the bird was but together.  I don't know if the mats were used in field maintenance depots, but British camo is always uniform and either the A or B scheme.  So in a nutshell, yes hard edged.

Cheers

Mike  I masked my Avro Anson with poster tack. It is like putty. You roll it out like a string and place it where you want it and comes off easy.

I wish I had more time to start my other build the Fairey Fulmar. I hope to start soon. I am putting lots of hours in at work wich is a good thing. Big Smile

Thanks John, Darren and Nomad. I think I'd over thought the problem about masking and the poster tack seems like the perfect answer so thats what I'm gonna do, thanks again.

Glad to see you've got your problem straightened out and are moving forward again.

Another way to do the camo (just so you'll have more options) is if you have access to a photocopier with different enlargement and reduce settings to blow-up the drawing in the instructions till they're the same size as the model and then cut the camo pattern out and stick it to the model with blue-tack or blue tape.

Great work going on here!!

Got started on my Bf 109E3!  Finally right!  Anyway put Eduard's detail set in and got the side walls done this week, minus the weathering.  Currently working on updating the cockpit floor and seat, after that the IP.  Anyway here's the sidewalls:

First up let me apologise to everyone for England's woeful performance  tonight at the world cup, England generally go about football tournaments the hard way but that was almost to much Angry

B17, nice start Yes look forward to seeing more updates.

Just a couple of pictures of my long drawn out progress

The underside is Tamiya sky as the Gunze was out of stock.

This is the topside that I had so much trouble with, it was stripped twice but Gunze came to the rescue and I just need a few little touch ups, I used blue tack to mask giving me a semi hard edge, thanks Nomad for the suggestion.

The Camo is the reverse of the Tamiya instructions but I got hold of some AM decals which I hope to get started on this weekend.

Cheers...
