Thanks for the comments razordws.

Daywalker, I really like how the Lifecolor paints go on really thin and have a great smooth finish. Having to make several passes to get good coverage can be troublesome, especially when doing the mottle. Other than that, I like them. They bond relatively well considering they are water based, which is nice for masking. I may have to consider masking as an alternative to free-handing the mottle.

Thanks guys, progress has been slow but the weather finally warmed up a bit so the F8 has some color on it and some but not all the decals yet. I am hoping to get the rest of them on today so I can future it this evening and get the RLM 80 on it tomorrow. I am really starting to like the Model Master Acryl paints better than the Tamiya paints they seem to spray much better and smoother.

RLM 78 and 79 is on

Got most of the markings on last night, the camo will be painted over some parts of the markings so the decals had to go on first. Hummm I just might get this done by the end of the month Stick out tongue

Vetteman, the 190 is looking cool!Yes Very smooth!!! Looking forward to seeing progress on the paint/decals.

Thanks for comments Julez. I finished up the Eduard kit and managed to get a couple of photo's of it before breaking the pitot tube, boarding step, and the long range antenna off in a hard landing. Not real happy with the photo's, but here they are.

Another Tamiya kit is on the bench. Another JG300 aircraft, The late war A8 piloted by Maj. Walther Dahl is the plane I'm shooting for. Looking forward to seeing the A5 your working on. The BMW in the Eduard kit is amazing!

Mobious wow I like very much the camo came out great YesYes Man what a tough build to follow geeze.

Anyway here goes, some more WIP pictures cause I am on a roll today it seems. Got all the decals on it, there must have been a thousand of them. And got the spiral on the spinner, couldnt find the masks and my attempts at making one of my own, well lets just say the kit decal worked better. Not perfect but close enough I think to make me happy anyways.

The rest of the decals

Got the future on it tonight to seal the decals and with any luck at all I should be able to start painting the RLM80 tomorrow. If not it will be a few more days because rain is on the way again Bang Head

Randy -- looking SUPERB mate! I love this kit and you're doing it justice bigtime! You said these are Model master's acrylics range? Do they have a proprietory thinner, and what's the ratio for spraying???

I think this'll be my next F-8, I have another copy of this kit on its way, after all...

Julez, Daywalker, Mobious, and Thunderbolt wow thank you all for your kind words and encouragement, you all make me want to build to the standards of this very talented group. I don't feel I have made it yet, but think I am getting closer with each build. I hope this next set of WIP pictures don't disappoint.

Thunderbolt Model Master does have a thinner for their acrylic paints, however I haven't tried it as it is rather pricey for a tiny bottle. What I have found is that you don't get near MM acrylics with alcohol, the stuff turns to marshmallow and clogs everything in sight. I thin mine with distilled water at around 25 or 30 percent and I clean my airbrush with lacquer thinner  and rinse with water, cleaning it with my normal windex and water for Tamiya paints doesn't seem to do the trick.

Now on to the trials and tribulations of my full day motteling this 190. As I said I had very good luck with my 262 motteling with MM acrylics. Today I spent all day trying to get a decent pattern out of my AB, it would splatter, then it would clog then try to empty the cup all at once. I tried everything I could think of and still had troubles. Went thru my first bottle of RLM 80 and ran and got a second bottle, I even tried thinning it with lacquer thinner geeze, it flowed great but dried before it hit my test piece. Bang Head Censored. Now I have gone through half my second bottle of paint and thought of acrylic retarder, a run down to the local Arron Brothers and back home with a bottle of the stuff in my grimy and cranky at this point mitts. I had no idea how much retarder to mix with the paint so a few drops at a time were added until my clogging problem was solved, anyway it ended up being roughly 15% retarder to paint that worked for me. It could also be that I was trying to paint too fine a pattern with my AB too, as the 262 is much bigger and the RLM76 didnt clog my AB. Ok so here are the pictures, not what I was trying to do but it looks ok to me.

Randy -- looking good, mate. I think you have more experimental fortitude than me, a run of bad luck like that with the AB and I'd be more than disheartened. You have the ability to apply scientific method and stick with it, and the end result looks good -- clean mottle with no overspray, and the decals are by no means obscured, which is the object.

Well done! She'll be a winner on the shelf!

Cheers, M

Randy- From your description of the AB troubles, I expected it to look very bad indeed!  I don't see any evidence of paint troubles, it looks very good from where I am sitting- well done!

Thank you all for your complements it means a lot coming from you guys. I think I got the AB to paint as fine a line as it was able to but it wasn't what I had in mind. But then again that happens a lot it seems. I am happy with it anyway, and ecstatic that you all like it.

Thunderbolt I am a stubborn man what can I say

Mobious I slid in just under the wire man, got the clear coat on it today and an hour later it got cold and started raining Stick out tongue

Tomorrow the weathering starts, the rain shouldn't slow that down much, because I got me a propane heater for the mancave today.

Vetteman, Glad you managed to clear coat everything before the weather went South. Be careful with combustibles in the Mancave! Looking forward to seeing the weathering on the F8.

Got the Anton ready for primer to check seams, wing roots, and other areas. Should have primer on it tonight, and if all goes well some photo's tomorrow.

Spike, thanks for the comments on Yellow 11.  The Eduard kit is amazing. The detail doesn't end with the BMW power plant, the rows of rivets down the fuselage and across the wings are mind boggling. I built the week end edition, but I have the A8 full kit in the stash that I hope to get started on when I have more time. Maybe build an opened up190.

 A shot of the Tamiya 190 A8.

Some wet sanding and it should be back to the booth for another go.

Mobious, Vetteman, Krow - top stuff, as always! Krow, that engine looks awesome - how much of it is your own work or is it all the kit. Also, what is the wingspan of the model in 1/24?? I have a shelf but not a particularly big one...

A wider question for you all - I primed my D-9 in silver and then pre-shaded in Nato black. All Tamiya. I've now added the Luftwaffe blue to the underside and fuselage but used Xtracrylics, 50% thinned. The Nato black doesn't seem to like the Xtracrylics at all and has an agitated appearance (almost as if I'd painted over thick dust). Have you had any experience of one type of acrylic paint affecting another??

I'll soldier on, sand and remedy but this is surely the build that never ends....

Krow, That's fantastic. Nicely detailed and paintedYes

Stumpjumper, Not had any experience with the Tamiya paint line. Hope you can get it sorted out.

Vetteman, Thanks for the tip on the retarder, I've upped my thinner solution and the acrylics are spraying wonderfully smooth.

Looking forward to seeing more progress!

Thanks for the compliments ,the work on here is some of the best so far for 2010. The wingspan of the 1/24 Trump D-9 is exactly 17.125" .The engine on mine is well documented in my thread on the aircraft forum. The kit is rudimentary  but very usable. There is a link on page one that goes to an excellent blog of the kit, speakin' of page one I'm gonna see if I'm on page one here....D-9'S ROCK!

Mobious the A-8 is looking good cant wait to see how it turns out after that last beauty you finished

Krow113 that engine is no less than spectacular am gonna have to locate the thread so I can watch the build

Julez72 this is my second Tamiya kit, the first was an A6M5 Zero. I like the Tamiya kits but this one didn't seem to go together as easily as  the Zero did. But then again the wing root fit could have been my fault it wasnt really all that bad. I am so used to the Revell problems that this one was a breeze.

Daywalker I wish to thank you for hosting a group that has been no less than a blast, and for making the new guy on the German block feel welcomed here. My hat is off to you Sir, and all here.

Finished picture time Big Smile Yeah

I used Model Master Acryl paints and weathered it with with Tamiya Buff lighterned with white paint for the slight fading. For the exhaust I used ground pencil lead brushed on and dry brushed with Tamiya smoke. For the panel lines I used Burnt Umber oil wash. You sadly cant see them in the pictures very well but for paint chipping I used Talon Aluminum Powder applied with the tip of a toothpick, I think it came out very well, nice and subtle not a glaring at you kind of look.

For the weathering on the bottom I again used Burnt Umber washes and dry brushed water colors. This build is a first for me I dont usually build them with drop tanks and bombs on board but to my eye the Trop was screaming for them. so here are a couple I like showing the load she is carrying and the gear.

Thanks for looking, and please any suggestions of how I could have done better are quite welcomed.

Again Daywalker thanks for hosting a grand group Bow Down

Randy- Welcome to the finish line my friend!  That model came out beautifully, my hat is off to YOU!  For a self-proclaimed newbie, I would say you most definitely know your way around one of these birds.  Thanks so much for being a part of the GB!  Only critique I can offer is the stance of the landing gear looks off (not sure if it the camera angle or possibly an alignment issue?), seems to be sticking straight out of the wing, as opposed to raked forward.  The position of the gear doors seems to support this, as the longer portion is parallel to the ground.  Are the legs inserted fully, and seated properly?  Other than that, I think it is perfect!

Daywalker thank you for pointing that out, you are right. The legs are raked forward a bit but not enough. I was more concerned with the side to side angle than the rake I have to admit. After looking at other finished pictures, shoulda looked at some before I glued the legs on, I did miss the rake by a bit. The struts are pushed into the sockets all the way but were lose so I had to hold each one until the glue setup. I hadn't noticed it in the past but it seems like the 190's sit really high on the gear.

Oh on another note I was planning to use needles for the wing guns but this is the very first time that I HAVEN'T broken them off during the build, so I decided they had earned the right to stay there.

Hopefully I will be able to join round 4

Vetteman, Fantastic!Yes The camo looks great. An excellent build, and the paint scheme is the icing on the cake. Top notch work. Glad you enjoyed building the Tamiya kit. Hope to see more in RDIV!

Stumpjumper, Thanks for the comments. The D9 was the Tamiya 1/48 kit. It's a blast to build. As for all the answers, I'm still learning myself. There are a fine bunch of folks here that all have shared techniques and tips. First on the list is our illustrious obergruppenfahrfennuegenmiester Tongue Tied

Spike, Got paint on the Anton. and a couple of clear coats. Should be ready for decals.

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/DSC_0003:550:0]

I was afraid the lines maybe too hard, but after looking them over a dozen or so times, they should be ok.
