Official Natural Metal Finish Group Build II
Posted by vetteman42 on Monday, April 26, 2010 2:32 PM

The first group was so much fun we just gotta do it again, so WELCOME to round II.

Rules

Any aircraft finished with foil, paint, or what ever else you use for a natural metal finish. The model should be at least 30% NMF. Any scale would be fine, prop, jet, or helicopter as long as it flies. You can use all the aftermarket stuff you would like or build  OOB. Cross overs would be fine and partial starts, carry overs from the first group will be allowed also. WIP pictures are a must so we can build our skills, and they are losta fun to share. This will be a 1 year long build starting May 2 2010 and ending May 1 2011. So build 1 or 2 or more. And feel free to take a badge when you sign up, gotta give it back if you don't finish though.

The goal of the group is to have fun, build some fine looking models, and to learn something new.

vetteman42 Excellent!

Sign me up with a 49% completed Trumpeter 1/32 scale P-51 D Looking forward to another successful GB!

Resin replacement wheels came in the mail last week, the kit is put away for now yet I have new inspiration now that NMF II is going to start soon. When I get a chance I will post a picture comparing the wheels, really no comparison accept for anyone interested in the kit.

Richard,

How about a B-29 Superfortress in a smaller scale with Soviet markings depicting the ones copied by Stalin? They even left the cast 'Boeing' into the foot pedal controls. Just a thoughtIdea

Vetteman,

Can you put me down for a Tamiya 1/48 P-47D depicting the Kansas Tornado and a Hasegawa 1/48 F-86F?

These will be my first NMF models so I look forward to participating and learning.

Yes!

After searching the FSM community, the current GB NMF and a post that I placed back on 20 April, ( Thanks to Julez72, fermis, plastickjunkie, rjkplasticmod, bondoman, wing nut, and  Hans von Hammer) I will base coat them with Gloss Black and then top off with Alclads Aluminum Lacquer's.

I am looking forward to learning more from those that are versed in this process so I can deliver some positive results to this GB!

Pics to follow!

Randy - Would you mind if I join in with a cross build? I plan on building Lindberg's old XF-91 Thunderceptor for the Rocket power Group Build that starts May 1. There's going to be lots of scratch building, rescribing and swearing going on so it should be a fun kit to put together! Stick out tongue  I would love to join in if it's okay!

I think you're going to like the Alclad paint. I did my first full NMF with the stuff and it sure made a believer out of me. Yes

...them glue fumes gettin to you again ?

LOL. Always...Whistling Nah, just my dorky way of bein funny.

Ok, i've consulted my other half (girlfriends are great non-biased help in picking out your next builds) and she chose a B17 over a P51. So you can put me up for Revell's (of germany) 1/48 B17.

Rivet counters amongst us should now avert their eyes as it is a B17F.... They never really were painted in NMF untill the G version came out but methinks it will look cool anyways. Nobody will accuse me of being too focussed on absolute accuracy. Hey, its a hobby innit?WinkYes Might even slap together some custom decals for it, dunno yet

Can't waitEats

None were issued that way, but a few were in the SWP theater in NMF after they had completed their bomber careers and became executive transports.

Please say it's so

Umm...... Usually i like to be the "yes man" but in this case i have to dissapoint you Julez.... I will try a foil finish the coming year but it will not be this B17. Sorry...Zip it!

Have been thinking about ordering me some Alclad paints though as i have seen wonderful results with it the previous year. Not promising anything...

Seriously, for my first foil finish i would want to have the time and an easy kit (Mig 15?) to work with. As i am departing for an extended visit to the USA the end of May i wouldn't be able to pull it off. You guys will have to wait untill mid JulyWink

I would like to join, either with my barely-started Revell P51D (1:48) from NMF I, or a new one if that one does not qualify. I have the Revell RB-36H Peacemaker in the stash, but that will have to wait for NMF V or thereabouts lol.  cheers.

A foiled B-17 would be a very impressive build to be sure, and one would need sunglasses just to look at the pictures. But I have to agree with Kermit its not a good subject for a first foil attempt. Did get the modeler juices flowin though. Kermit I cant wait to see a foiled MiG-15.

Jmart am more than happy to have you join us here and your build is on the roster, your currant build is perfectly acceptable here. Carry overs and partcial builds are fine guys.

Julez not to worry I am sure I will be gettin even with you and Richard with questions about the paints. Eats I think you will both find the foil is not as difficult as you would think, however it isn't as forgiving in surface prep as paint is.

Randy, don't ask me, i've only ever done one before, athough i'm 70% done with another...

I'm imagining myself foiling, bits of foil stuck to my hands, face, arms, legs and the dog as well... a waste paper basket full of scrunched up foil in the corner....The Sabre will come out looking like it has small pox with all the dust i'll trap under it...Other than that i'm looking forward to it....

Julez,

Awesome! Would be cool to both do a foil finish at the same time. Makes me feel alot less scared LOL.Wink

Randy,

Your news about doing a painted NMF brought a smile to my face when i read itSmile. This year is gonna see alot of new things happening!

Let me start off right away with the first annoying noob question about foilingEmbarrassed I have already heard that ordinary kitchen foil is just fine for foiling right? Well..... Do i need to use the special foil glue or can i use ordinary glue with that and what is the difference? (actually a bunch of questions...LOL)

Well,... it's saturday the 1st of may here, early morning and i already took out the box in order to start my B17 today. Gonna be fun fun fun!Yeah

Richard, You go firstWhistling

I've read an article about kitchen foil and i think you may need a certain type of glue, but don't quote me on that...My LHS has a good selection of BMF which i used to use to mask canopys with before i started buying pre cut ones but i'd like to know what Randy used to cover his starfighter with....How does it conform to raised details ect ect ect....

Hello Vetteman42

Sign me up for a 1/48 Tamiya P-47D. I'm just about to start a FW 190 for that group build, so I will most likely be spreading it out over the next several months.

Nice looking Mustang Julez! Toast

Alright folks... here's my plan. Wink

You remember the kit, right?

It is horrible! No cockpit, no engine, no nuthin'! While digging through the stash the other day, I might have found a glimmer of hope or at least some help anyway.

I figure that I can rob some essential parts from the Tamiya F-84. Since Republic built the the straight wing F-84 before the F-84F and the XF-91 came between the two, I think that I can safely steal from this kit. Blind Fold  I should be able to use the cockpit at least but what I really want to do is use the nose from the Tamiya kit. The intake on the Lindberg XF-91 looks too large and if I can graft on the F-84 nose it should bring it down to size. Plus I'll have some intake trunking so that you can't see right through the model. Surprise

What I need to come up with is something to represent the jet engine in the back. I tried digging through the stash again to see what could fit and all I came up with was the Academy SU-27 engine looked about the right size but I'm not robbing from that kit. I'll have to figure something out though. The rocket engines should be easy enough by just adding tubing in the rear.

I plan to scratch build gear wells and rescribe and rerivet the whole airframe. Lots of work to do! Black Eye

That's my game plan and hopefully I can get started soon.

Wish me luck! The fun begins tomorrow.
