 vetteman42:

Daywalker thanks for the How-to-Strip (paint that is) tutorial.

Oh boy... Frank and his shenanigans!!! http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2699/4195709433_74a8677156_o.gif

DANG!  Looks like you caught me in the act.  I promise- no more stripping! Embarrassed LOL...

I am thinking about putting the kit pilot in the MiG, but am curious about Tamiya's color callout.  They list the pilot's flight suit as being "flat brown", but I had always thought the 1950's Soviet pilots wore black leather flight suits.  I looked around for a photo, but the few, small photos I found were inconclusive.  Does anyone have a source for something like this?

Julez,

FANTASTIC mustang buddy! I just love that tail; must have taken some time to get it just right. Also the black striping looks very agressive. Yup....it's a hit allrightWink

I have Ospreys Koraen Air War book. It shows Russian MiG 15 pilots flying dressed like they were in WWII. A black leather jacket worn with their standrad service uniform. And a blackleather flight helmet w/goggles. They did no have G-suits at that point like US pilots did.

Thanks Carlos, that confirms what I was thinking!  The pilot looks to be wearing a heavy flying suit, so I shall go with the black leather overall on him.  Thanks again! Toast

Julez,

An Academy P38 huh? That's pretty good news and very very interesting to watch. I have had that one in my sights for a while now but heard that the tail boom alignment sometimes causes modelers to have headaches LOL. So i'll be watching this one closely and observe your own experience with itWink

Here is my WIP of my 1/48 P-47 D. Cockpit components painted and will put them together soon- will be a little challenge to route all the wiring behind the panel- the back appears to be visible when placed in the fuselage. I tried to make my own belts using wire and Tamiya tape- turned out OK, I think.

Rob, great job on the P-47D cockpit. The detail on the instrument panel and wall boxes is amazing. The seat belts look good too. Well done on such a small-scale cockpit.

... I'm doing a little experimenting while I'm waiting on the thinner to arrive so that I can strip the paint off my plane. Since I don't intend to install the fuel tanks, I going to use them to test 101 Aluminum adherence to different base coats. On one fuel tank the base coat is Future and on the other fuel tank the base coat is Plastikote Gray Sandable Primer. Both are curing now. I'll apply the 101 to both, let it cure, then put on some masking tape and see if it lifts the paint. The Alclad rep didn't think it would for either base coat, but I need to know for sure - I don't want to go through complete paint removal again! On my actual kit, I will top coat with Future before doing any masking. This little experiment is to simply see how well the Alclad adheres directly to the base coats. If I had some Krylon on hand, I'd experiment with it too.

Btw, the Alclad II 101 Aluminum is adhering to both the Plastikote Gray Sandable Primer-coated fuel tank and the Future-coated fuel tank. (In the case of the later, the Future was applied directly over the gray plastic.) However, the finish on the fuel tank coated in Future looks much more metal-like. Must be the glossy undercoat. For either tank, the masking tape does not lift off the Alclad II. Of course, you probably knew all this! :-)

To catch up -

Stik - Nice job on the F-84E NMF. Where those all enamel aluminum colors?

Julez - Super job on that Mustang. Look at the tail - wow! I like how you weathered  black stripes on the fuselage and wings. The nose cone must have been a challenge to paint. I hope my Mustang looks as good!

Respectfully, Dobby

Thanks all for the kind wordsYes I'm glad you like Mrs Bonnie...There are a couple of spots i'm not happy with mostly the tamiya canopy(again) but what can you do, struggle with a vac one or struggle with the box one...For my next P-51D i think i'll try the Hasegawa offering, better canopy but no dropped flaps, i can live with that....

Richard, Yeah mate i've looked at a few reveiws of the Has and Academy P-38 and i get the impression that the Academy has a better fit but the Has has better detail, but i am expecting trouble with the booms..I want to do this OOB as much as possible for a speedier build, 15 hours over 2 weeks if you can call that speedy so i'll close the canopy and concentrate on the exterior shiny stuff...I will put seat belts in and i'll put some of those Karaya 50 cal barrels in the nose though.....Can't wait, i think i'm hooked on NMF......Tongue Tied

Nicefit, good call useing Future as an undercoatYes

Julez72 I cant spot a thing wrong with your build at all, canopy looks good, and you did a fine job on the paint job, especially feathering in the strips and the chipping is fantastic. Miss Bonnie is a prize to be proud of. YesYes

Sorry it took me so long to comment but your build was up on the front page yesterday.

Two colors are enamels, the darker Humbrol shade and the medium Testors shade. The lightest is the Tamiya acrylic.

Julez72,

Great job on pony #2! The black really accents the NMF well!

vetteman42,

My P-51 is still boxed up until I can finish up this 'in between quick build' Well its not that simple and as usual I  am getting carried away with scratch built details. Anyhow its a victory of sorts as crossover foil has made my return rollers and idler wheel sparkle! The idea is to tone down the shine with weathering later on, kind of opposite from most armor modelers who add NMF to the worn metal at a later stage, usually with a lead pencil.

Randy,

Question....

As i am working on my B17 i cannot help but get the feeling i will not be able to finish it in time for my trip to the USA later this month. Also i have had some mishap dropping the model causing me to loose all the time i spent on sanding and filling as the fuselage split open again...Bang Head. It made the seam on this (already old) mold even more evident and will need lots of sanding and filling work to get it right again.

Therefore i would like to ask you if you are willing to let me do a NMF next to the B17, namely Tamiya's " Korean War"  F51? I probably won't be able to finish it in time also but at least i expect the problem solving part on that build to be near non existant. A welcome treat after some difficult time consuming builds....

Blame it on yourself and Julez for building those gorgeous mustangs the pat few days.... I want one toooo!! *whine whine*

Just say yesWhistlingAngel

Kermit your kidding the B-17 had a mishap happen to it ? Censored man what a bummer ! I do hope you will be able to save her without too much trouble.

Hey I don't mind taking the blame at all for anyone wanting to build a Mustang, any Mustang at all. You are right it would look quite sexy parked next to your B-17 all shiny an stuff so .................

Of course your F-51 build is in ToastYeah

Just took the time to get something of an introduction goingWink

Some box/ sprue shots,....bla bla lol:

This box has been sitting at my LHS for a while, decalsheet is a tad yellowishSmile:

And this is my intended finish out of a possible three options: Buckeye Blitz VI

The pilot of this particular airplane, Capt. J.W. Rogers was nicknamed "Whistlin' Joe" because he attached a whistling device to a wing in order to scare the enemy when he came in low and fast. One time he actually cleared a path down a hillside for a platoon of pinned down British troops by strafing it clear with his machineguns.

Also he has been one of the very very few F51 pilots actually scoring a Mig 15 kill. As a group of four migs was passing him overhead he got a lucky shot in the Mig's belly. His killcam malfunctioned but he and his wingman saw it catch fire and go down.

So, lots of history on this plane, a thing i always likeWink Problem however is that i have seen pictures of Buckeye Blitz VI with yellow fuselage bands, nose and wingtips as opposed to the red depicted on the boxart.... wonder which one is the one.

Can't wait to play with this one as i have never built the Tamiya P51, only the Hasegawa oneBig Smile

Kermit -- I built that one for the Korea GB last year. Another entry in that group did Buckeye Blitz, I did Col. Clarke's plane, yellow trim, on the other side of the box. It's an absolute beauty, even the decals went on superbly. It's my first modern-tool P-51 and I have a couple more in the stash, one's on the end of my bench right now and will be going into 1969 camo/El Salvador markings.

There's nothing to watch out for, really. Yes, the canopy can be a bit tricky to line up, but that's it. Even the exhausts and prop can go on after main painting. I did a weathered metallic finish, I wanted to capture the beat-up look of the planes that served in the extreme weather in Korea.

Have fun -- it'll always be a favourite build of mine and I expect to have a shelf-full one day!

Richard, I as well know the horror of watching a build fall to the uncompromising piece of real estate you stand on. I was working on an old MPC CH-53 that was absolutely going together like a DREAM!!!! I had to do my building in the cellar/under house access area (we lived on a carved out rise) and went upstairs after a bench session and had it setting on the box. I went to open the front door and inadvertantly tilted the box just enough for it to loose traction and SMASH!! So I do sympathizeSad Looking forward to seeing the Mustang!!! Yes, I love hearing the stories of the prop jobs bagging a jet!!!

Kermit,

I know how you feel.  While working on my B-17 for the first NMF, it slipped out of my hands.  Luckily I caught it before it hit the floor, but in the process of catching it, I broke the wing joint and the putty work.  Well long story short the joined was fixed and the plane finished.

Hi all,

Thanks to everyone for pitching in their horror stories; seems like i am not the only one...Wink

Been busy on her today after spraying the interior green for the F51. Talking about putty...Tongue Tied:

Don't worry, i know what im doing LOL. And yes, she could have used a bit of cleaning before i took the shots....

Also had time to do the trickiest masking jobs, namely the sperry ballturret and the nosecone:

So, yes i started on a second build but this beauty is all but forgotten i assure youWink Also went to the local DIY market today to pick up some laquer based gloss black; your equivalent of krylon. According to swanny's website it is a good primer to use on high gloss finishes. Planning on decanting that paint as well and shoot it through my trusty airbrush.

WIP....

Sorry guys been a bit under the weather the past couple days.

Supressionfire I really like what you are doing with the tank, nice work foiling those tiny parts. I do want to see how it turns out, are you post WIP pictures on the darkside ?

Kermit I havent been lucky enough to have built a Tamiya P-51 yet so will be watching this one closely. Thank you for posting the kit pictures and decal sheet. You have chosen a nice subject also, I really like Capt. Rogers mount and want to do that one someday.

Great save on the B-17 too Toast That masking must have taken you a week to do lol, have your eyes straightened out yet ?

Theuns Welcome Sign your build is in and thank you for joining us. Post WIP pictures anytime and grab the group badge if you like.

Oh you are building the ICM F-51D I cant wait to see how that one goes together. I have ICM's MiG-3 on the bench now and am very impressed with the kit so far, it has loads of detail. The only draw back is there are no locating pins.

Randy,

After all the revell stuff i've been building for so long i must say that this one is just a dream, i just dryfitted the fuselage and pit floor together and it is near seamless and fits together like a glove. The tamiya kits cost alot more but you certainly get something back for itSmile Have to say that the hasegawa offering was slightly more detailed though. But that is almost a year ago and my memory is a bit clouded... Love the posable flaps option on this kit nevertheless. I would certainly recommend the kit to anyone.

And the b17... The first filling/ sanding session took me a modelling session day in the weekend. This subsequent session took me slightly less, i would say...... 10-12  hours total? And there's nothing wrong with my eyes sofar but a cloud of dust comes offa my clothes everytime i slap em LOL. Just the way i like it.Geeked

On a more off topic note: Picked up the movie "twelve o' clock high" this afternoon (1949 with Gregory Peck)  and must say that it is really nice to watch. I just love them old black and white war moviesBig Smile. Just sayin'...... Lotsa nice B17 for you to drewl on and actual war footage for the action scenes.Stick out tongue
