Chris - interesting to watch the Landie come together. I used to drive an old Land Rover (not as old as that, but still), and have a lot of affection for pretty much everything they made pre-'94. Have to say, I find your paint-everything-and-then-brush technique terrifying! Brush painting is far and away my weakest skill, and I usually try to airbrush everything that I can on its own before assembly.

Ok,

So i've now primed my pink panther and other parts still on the sprue tree.  I used Tamiya acrylic XF-19.

I will me mix up a batch of pink paint within the next few days and get to work painting.  I'll also be hand painting some of the items on the sprue tree, such as tyres, tools, weapons, radio etc.

Will be sure to keep the posts coming.

After most of the night spent trying to figure out how to use photobucket, I thought I'd share some of my WIP pictures.

Not much to see so far, but I'm personally quite happy with the speed of this build - don't worry, i'll get bogged down soon.

The kit practically falls together and I'm very very impressed with the level of detail.  Also, the styrene is nice and soft and reacts well to Tamiya proprietary liquid cement.

This is the first car I've built and the third piece of armour.  I've decided to try and paint the whole thing all in one go, then go back with a brush to pick out all the smaller items.  I know some of you probably do this already, but it's a first for me.  Just hope my hand is steady enough.

Hey, Just trolling around in the background here, but I couldn't help but give a minor criticism of your wonderful build, OWL.

On the back of the props, based on the weathering you gave them, there shouldn't be any yellow paint left on the tips. Don't worry, you're not alone in this. All props weather more on the back than on the front, resulting in the backside of the prop tips being stripped to bare metal (or plastic, as the case may be). IDK if they painted over the bare metal with a quick swash of black, as mechanics typically do today, but the way you weathered them, they should be bare metal.

Teriibly sorry to do this to you but i wan't to put the Arado on hold indefinately in favor of other builds that were planned. Somehow i just can't motivate myself to work on this floatplane even though it has been a wonderful kit sofar. Maybe in a couple of months.... My apologies to all of you. I think it would be best to remove it from the rollcall alltogether Doogs...

I'm currently trying to decide whether I want to do the Tamiya Spit as a crossover build. It's a natural for the Spit GB, but also ripe for some serious weathering:

I am now calling the Spitfire finished!  The final filter was a light tan, mixed with water and some flat clear (to help it flow better) applied in a few coats. Some areas required additional coats due to the Future I used for the decals still showing through. I think this technique worked very well, pooling in the recesses and around all the raised details. The plane looks too dirty to be sitting on the clean shelf, so I am thinking about making a little scene to place it into.  I've never done any base before, so it will be an experiment!

the gun stains, exhaust and darker streaking were from an additional dark gray wash that I made, and streaked in the direction of the airflow. The contrast it created with the tan is very nice.

BTW Casper the chihuahua (the real dog whom this avatar is based) got pretty excited last night flinging around a toy. He was a little too close to the model stand and a small plush toy knocked the Bf 109 off of its pedestal! Lucky no repairs necessary as the construction of the dio was quite sturdy and nothing got torn from the base.....lucky!

Casper- That dio is awsome.  Well done, sir.

Scott- Looking great! I'm going to have to do some kind of armor thing soon. WWII of course. Probably in 1/48 to fit in with the warbirds on my shelf.  You guys and your tanks have got me inspired.

Owl- Doing a wonderful job with the Spit' , one of the most beautiful aircraft to take to the skies. BTW , couldn't help but notice the gaps in the fit of the wing root area. Try fitting shims made from thin strips of sheet tyrene or stretched sprue in  gaps such as those you encountered on the Spitfire. I've started using some sort of shim in poor fits like that only in the past couple three years. It really helps with the filling and sanding those kind of seams.

Well, finished the pin wash with raw umber oil  paint. Also, added all the fiddly bits except screens and mirror.

So now it's FILTER time!

Rolling right along with the spitfire now. I dry-brushed the fading on each panel by hand. I added aluminum paint chips whee the bare plastic showed and around the wing roots. the fading was pretty stark, so I added a filter of olive drab acrylic (base paint was enamel), water and a bit of future to smooth things out. The blending was very nice, and I think I will do a similar effect when it comes to dirtying up the plane.

then I added full invasion stripes. I masked and painted them by hand. Decals and weathering next!

Casper, that is amazing. deffinatly inspired me, i have got to do a dio like that. And please reconsider, we need more dio builders, especially of your standard. Love this build.

Ok, I'm calling this Bf-109E3 diorama completed. I'm pretty happy with the way this turned out but not sure I'll be racing out to build another diorama anytime soon!

my dads favourite plane is the spitfire MK XI VE, the 5 bladed one but unfortunatly he doesnt have the time to build it.

I've gotten a lot more work finished on the Spit. The kit was a gift from MrSquid2U (thanks again!) but was missing the canopy and decals. No problem, it gave me an excuse to raid my spares box. The extra (open) canopy was left over from the old FROG kit i built last year (Spitfire chasing a Buzz bomb on a stand) and fits nearly perfectly. I only sawed off a little area behind the pilot seat. The decals will also be from the spares box.

The landing gear in this kit were super skinny and attached to the gear doors, and lacked any detail. I sanded them off and, again raiding spares from the FROG kit, fit different gear to the doors. A thin wire was added for the brake line.

the (radiator?) intakes on the underside of the wings were a see-through affair, so I boxed them in with a bit of plastic card.

I added a bit of plastic strip to the otherwise bare wheel wells to spruce them up a bit and went to work on the painting. I was experimenting to see if a pre-shade would be able to be seen through a coat of paint from a rattle can. It didn't, really! But I achieved a splotchy look to the base color by blotting and swiping the Olive Drab with a napkin dipped in a bit of thinner.  I'll be painting the undersides in a similar matter, then fading the panels by hand.
