Pix , yup it doesn't look like it would save much space.
It also looks like the modern airliners with the folded wing tips.

Finishing up on my Kate now just have to finish painting the torpedo , prop ,
attach the machine gun and add the LF antennas.

I believe that only the type 21 had folding wingtips. The model 32 had clipped wings, the model 33's wings were rounded & the same span as the 32, and the 52's wings were also shorter.
It doesn't seem like it would save much space, it may have been for the carrier's elevators.

I know what you mean about Great Models. I'm waiting for two Trimaster Heinkel 162s. The site says they're "still looking." Well, at least you've got yourbuild to look forward to. Mine's done, so I gotta "move on."

update: used a watercolour sludge wash for the panels lines of my p-40 this afternoon...worked pretty well...matt coat next then for some pastels to simulate exhaust smoke etc (i managed to drill out the hobbycraft exhausts, so i might as well try to do them justice Smile [:)]

I finished the Zeke tonight. I wasn't too happy with the fit of the Verlinden flaps or wingfolds, but at least I'm done. I'll post more pics on the aircraft page. How's everyone else doing?

The Japanese used an anti-corrosive protective coating on all interior surfaces of their aircraft. The translucent coating was applied over the metal. The tint varied from this blue shade to an intense green. Here's a pic of the landing gear on a Zeke.

The cockpits were overpainted to avoid reflections, which would impair the pilot's vision. Most Zeke cockpits I have seen are painted in this color :

The colors varied by manufacturer. The Kate's wheel wells would be the Aotake blue color, and the cockpit would be "Nakajima cockpit color." White Ensign Models produces this color. Check their website to see the shade. It is a light, yellow-green.

i'm intrigued by that blue...so that's definitely the colour? i seem to remember tamiya saying some kind of "jap interior green" which i have a polly scale pot of...oh well, it sure looks great!!
can i ask, is that colour similar to say, "azure blue": the one the brits used on their aircraft undersides in the mediterranean theatre?? if so, i might be in business when i get round to repainting my pearl zeke Smile [:)]

also, is that blue used in the cockpit interior as well? or is that the "greeny" colour that is suggested in the instructions?
finally Tongue [:P]

, can that blue clour be applied to all jap aircraft at pearl?? (thinking of my kate if i ever get round to her!!)

I got the Aotake blue areas painted today. I first shot a coat of MM non-buffing Aluminum, followed by Gunze Clear Blue. When I move the model around, it reflects like the real thing. I'm VERY happy with the results.

The flaps are PE from the Verlinden detail set, and they haven't been glued yet. I just placed them in the openings for the pic.

How is everyone else's build going?

The kit"s (1/48 Hasegawa) canopy is molded very thin & clear. There is very little distortion. All I did was wash it with dishwashing liquid, and dip it in Future. It has to be one of the best kit canopies on the market.

How did you achieve the clarity of your canopy. Did you use any Future or polish? It's clearer than the real thing! I'd love to get same result for my Zero.

fightinjoe - I think that painting has become my favorite part of building. I find myself looking for obscure Luftwaffe camo patterns, and I'm not intimidated by the complexity of them anymore. The "greenhouse" canopies are a real pain to mask, but when the tape comes off cleanly, they can make a big difference in the kit. Glad you enjoy it !

I cuoldn't resist shooting another pic of the Zeke with the black background. The prop isn't finished yet, and I wanted to see it with the canopy closed. The canopy is thin & clear enough to leave it closed, and I think it looks more like a Zeke that way.
