Hello modeling world;
Sorry I got onto this so late. Been very busy. My idea when I started in the hobby was to build all the American and Japanese planes that participated in Pearl Harbor and Midway. I know, very ambitious plan. So far I've got a Tamiya Zero almost completely done, and am at the paint and weathering stage of a Tamiya Wildcat. Got a Kate, Val, Dauntless(all Hasagawa). Acc. Min. Avenger. Revell Devastator. Might not be a real active member of the build but will add my 2 cents ask for others'.
I'm real happpy with the Tamiya kits so far. The fit is pretty good and they look like what they're supposed to. Can I expect the same from the Hasagawas? Just looking at my stash and find I've got a couple each of the Kates and Vals. Have plans for a Buffalo and a Vindicator. Any help on what ones I'm missing on my list? These will all be 1:48. Can't wait to ge to my A.M. Doolittle Raider later on.
Any info on the 'Midway Series' by Hasagawa(?) I saw a Dauntless on a website somewhere designated as such.

Happy Building

I repainted the Zeke, before the paint cured (within 2 hours of first attempt). I'm using acrylics, so I figured that the 4 hour "window" I use for enamels would be too long.

This is probably as close to the original color as I can get, and I'm happy with it.

Looks good so far fightinjoe. Thanks for the link Pixilater, I'll see if I can't try and mix the color as well as you did. I haven't even had a chance to start on mine yet though... maybe I can get some time to give it a go this weekend.

just wish i had a better kit to work with. revell to me is one step above snaptogether. but that is just my opinion. the difficult fit and the lack of interior detail really hurt the overall.

Looks good, fightinjoe ! We must have been posting at the same time. My "Zeke" will be one of the planes shot down that day. Maybe your P-40 is the one credited with the "kill !"

Got the paint on the Zeke airframe. I mixed Polly Scale "old concrete" with "British Interior green." It still looks a little too "tan." I'll wait 'till it fully cures, then add more green to the mix.

obiwan - I just found the info for the torpedoes (and all explosive ordinance from Dec. 7) Its a PDF, you need Adobe Acrobat to open it. It has color details for the torpedoes on page 7.

GREAT looking figures, obiwan !

AJACKETSFAN - This is a profile from j-aircraft of a Pearl Harbor Zeke. The areas of the fuselage under the canopy, as well as the interior framing of the canopy, is black.

This page includes some photos of artifacts from the raid.

Hope this helps !

Uh oh, Pixilater I didn't know that about an out of bottle color for the Zeke... I'm waiting on some other paint I need (IJN green, and IJN gray) I guess I'll have to figure out what to do for the outside colors as well. Oh well... maybe I'll have to push back the start just a little more. I haven't had much modelling time lately so I haven't even started my a/c yet... sorry guys maybe I'll start and get some pictures up on here soon.

Thanks tupr ,nick , pix ,fightnjoe for the info and glad u liked the pics.
I'll go with the light brown for the fins.

Nick: its my first time wiring up an engine and it isn't that tough
especially if u don't wire it completelySmile [:)]oh well maybe next time.
the canopy is masked and seperated from the a/c.I'm using the
1 piece canopy to mask the cockpit area.
hows your lighty salted P 40 coming along?maybe next time you'll
try "bacon" flavour.Tongue [:P]seriously though thats a great technique.

Pix: Great pictures ,I also see u have switched to a darker background.
the cockpit detail is showing very clearly too.It looks very promising,
I can't wait!Are you gonna fold the wing tips?Tongue [:P]

fightnjoe: my finger are crossed too.

here are the pilots.two twins from a Gekko and their older
brother from a Dinah. You also can see their Austin Powers' scarfs
soon I'll put them in their "shaguar"

obiwan,

cant find the reference but if memory serves the coloring on the fins was unpainted wood. i know this is extremely vague but any brown that looks similar should be right.

btw, just primed my p-40. see the need for more sanding but shouldnt take very long now. should be ready for the first shot of real paint by the weekend. still trying to get the camera to work right but should have pics soon. (fingers crossed)

Looks great, obiwan ! Really like that engine. I'm afraid I have no info on the torpedo fins, if you didn't find anything at j-aircraft. REALLY looking forward to seeing the finished bird, obi. Keep up the good work.

Now that my "Pixi-Geswader" project is done, I've had time to return to my Zeke. I'm adding folded wingtips, dropped flaps, and a resin rudder from the Verlinden set.

Here's how she looks so far. I'll probably mask the canopy, attach it, and paint tomorrow (Wednesday). Since White Ensign is the only company that produces an out of the bottle match for the Zeke color, I ordered some Polly Scale "old concrete," which I'll darken. I tried out the "custom aotake," (aluminum covered with clear blue) and it works. You just have to apply a thin coat of the clear blue. I may even try the clear blue over the cowl to get the "cowl blue-black" color. I wish the Aeromaster IJA/ IJN colors were still available !

From what I remember seeing they were a light brown, wood colored. Sure will look pretty when she's done! The engine looks great!

sentry: I got no ICQ ,please send me an email thru the forum.

hello all,
futured the kate last night.the camo on the wings
are pure imagination(found no references)
just stuck with what looked good.

the engine has been wired up.

the torpedo has been modified to "box" type as the j-aircraft site.
got a spare fin from the tamiya betty kit.
I remembered in the film "Pearl Habour" these torpedoes
were modifed for the conditions in the habour , with wooden fins.
anybody got the correct color for the fins?
the tamiya instructions just show semigloss black.

hope u like itTongue [:P]Smile [:)]

hi guysSmile [:)]
finished "salting" my p-40, and i think i overdid it!! my hawk looks like it's spent 3 years in the sahara!![:0]Tongue [:P] still, the overall effect is quite good and very different from anything i've previously done (i have only weathered armour in the past).
hope everyone else's projects are going ok...it's a bit quiet out there!

nick
