Hutchdh nice work on the NMF man ! I like the way the mixed paintsd worked out for you, meaning the Krylon and Alclad. The burnt metal looks very convincing too.

My P-51D is back on the bench and finally has the silver base coat on it,, Tomorrow the NG and OD are going on her and pictures will follow then.

Thought I would post a few pics of the Mono F-100D.  The Trum F-100D is on hold pending the release of some new decals from Caracal decals of the New Mexico ANG...I wanted these decals, so I could paint it in the rare light grey.

Back to the Mono build....the shiny areas are with the Krylon I referred to earlier..the other areas are Alclad, including the burnt metal areas...lots more work to do, but this ole bird is coming along nicely.

First pic is all taped off:

Masking removed:

Burnt metal area...two shots; one with and one without flash:

I use Krylon too... Big can, little price...  Those five-and-a-half-buck, 3 oz cans are ridiculous, but they still trap me...  Krylon makes the about the best (brightest) silver, plus it sheds the paint for chipping beautifully...

After using a 3200 grit pad and rubbing out some of the flecks, I re-applied another coat of the Krylon and it smoothed things out.  I will likely use this stuff again.  Like you say, it is a real bargain.

Thanks for the proof-of-concept on the Krylon aluminum, Hutch!  I was thinking of trying it, too, though I'm thinking of it to replace the kit chroming on  the Red Baron hot rod.  I stripped the kit chrome off most of the parts, because there was no way to deal with seams and sprue gate marks on some of them, without losing the chrome, anyway.  Your work shows that it could be used with good effect.

No problem...I've also tried the Krylong Metalized Silver...the Aluminum has a better, smoother, and richer tone with a lot of reflectivity.....The silver almost looks like it was colored with a crayon...good luck.

The kit has no cockpit floor, and I chose not to add one--trying to keep AMS at a minimum with this build.

AMS would have been drawing a floor to scale from plans found in a 1978 issue of "Aviation Week" then going throguh every AM P/E rack trying to find a matching part, then giving up because you used the wrong plans, which was pointed out in the Fall 1979  issue of "IPMS Quarterly" and using 125.00-worth of a different Jap bird's 'pit, then hunting down a resin seat, consols, stick, peddles etc.. and deciding to go "Old School Gizmologist" anyway, and just use styrene rod (stretched sprue), strip and sheet cut from an old garage sale sign...

As a Gizmologist, you do this:

 for 25 cents..

Yupper, my Zeke's on the way too.. Don't let those big ol' wheel cover pins scare ya... I cut 'em off a bit later, added some that were more to scale, and painted to look like bamboo (which is what they were made of, as well as the "Gear-down" indicator pins in the wings. Mitsubishi engineers cut weight EVERYWHERE)

I'm currently n the process of removing the molded-in engine facade and inserting the AT-6/SNJ mill in its place...  The Sakae engine was almost an exact copy of the T-6's Pratt & Whitney R-1340 -AN-1 Wasp radial powerplant, in the "Looks" department..

Some of the salt came up pretty easily; in other spots, it adhered so well that it's hard to remove it.

AHem..

Ain't gonna say "I told ya so", but I AM gonna give you th' look...Indifferent

 Hans von Hammer:

Anyone else I missed?

Hans, I do believe you forgot to add my F-100D.  it is coming along nicely.  I am building it the same time as the Trumpeter F-100C.  The Mono holds its own and I got it for $5.00!!!

Thought I'd add a few pics.  I am experimenting with Krylon Metallizer Aluminum from the big rattle can.  While I got a nice smooth finish on the underbelly, the topside had a few flecks.  I like the initial shine I was looking for to be followed with some Alclad, but I don't think I will use the Krylon again in this capacity....

Hi, all!

Just to prove that I've actually done something, here are photos, up to the current state, for my Zero.

If you remember, my last update showed the pilot installed in his office, and I was ready to close up the fuselage.  That I did, and I attached the wings.  Then I applied an aluminum undercoat, in preparation for using the salt weathering technique:

Next, shots of the salt applied:

We've already had a vigorous discussion on the merits of the salt technique, and on technical details.  I can take or leave using salt to do the chipping, but if I use it again, I will mix the salt and water first, then apply it in small drops/blobs on the surface.  If you apply the water by itself, the surface tension of such small amounts causes it to form droplets that are too large, at least in 1/48, and probably in 1/72.  But if you mix a sludge of salt, you can control the application better.

Once I applied the salt, I masked the canopy, which is a task I don't relish too much.  But actually, it's getting easier.  Or rather, with this old kit, and the way the canopy is molded, it was relatively easy.  Here it is:

Then I attached the canopy.  I shot the model with some IJN dark green first, because I needed to get it on the turtledeck under the canopy:

I did have some seams to fill; the canopy doesn't fit too well on this kit (where's Gaston? He can write a tome about it):

You can also see where I removed some of the salt along the wing root.  It looked OK, but it was later covered over in the next phase, which was to apply IJN dark green and gray:

Here's an shot of the starboard wing, with more of the chipping:

Some of the salt came up pretty easily; in other spots, it adhered so well that it's hard to remove it.  I have some ideas of what I will do, once the final colors are on and touch-up is finished (yes, you can see, there are some areas where I have to fix some overspray, etc).

Here's a shot of the underside:

The kit has no cockpit floor, and I chose not to add one--trying to keep AMS at a minimum with this build.  So, you can see, I stuffed wet tissue paper into the wheel wells, to kit from spraying the cockpit.

You can also see the mistake I made.  Next step is to apply the yellow recognition markings to the wings.  Duh.  I should have applied the yellow first, then masked over and applied the other colors.  Now, I have to go back and mask far more area, to apply the yellow.  I could bag the markings, but I think I want to add them.

If this is a Mafia, I feel like Danny DeVito and Joe Piscopo in "Wise Guys"....

The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen.

Hey all.....I have officially started.  The P-51D has received a wash, the raised Revell-Monogram lettering has been filed off of the horizontal stabilizer.  Still never understood why they put it on the exposed surface rather than on interior of the fuselage....also, I filed off the molded on seat belts.  Thinking about experimenting with some foil from my contact lenses pack....backup plans include standard PE belts and I could always glue & paint the pilot as a last resort.  Hopefully I can have the interior bits painted and the fuselage assembled before the end of the weekend....at least that's the plan now.

I've been lurking while completing a build for another GB...you guys...and gal.... are doing great work.  Hope I can live up to the standards that are being set here.

EDIT-oops...Hans...I went back and read the fine print in your first post....I should have started on or before 31 March....err....yeah....I meant to say that I started on 31 March, but I forgot to post...yeah...that's the ticket....does that count?  I will (better) have both finished builds before the 30 September date....I promise....are those really violins in those cases?

I hear the TAMIYAni family is looking for new recruits - maybe I should go check them out and see if they take care of the little guys . . . .   Perhaps the REVELLoroni's are recruting?  . . . Wink

Hans von Hammer

Thanks for letting me live.

No sweat... I don't need ta whack anyone just yet anyway...Perhaps I'll one day need a favor from you... Wink

For a next term of this great GB would you consider allowing more monogram/ revell/ revell AG kits?

I'v considered it, yes... I don't want to add Revell Germany though....

What I'd LIKE to do in Round Two is add the pre-merger Revell kits... A "MonoVell Mafia", perhaps...

I was also thinking more of a "Classic Kit" GB even later on, and adding the other guys that get "Poo-pooed" regualarly, like HAWK (to include the Testor's reboxes), Lindberg, Aurora, AMT, Life-Like, Glenco, Heller, and the like... I still want to keep it "60s & 70s tech"... I need to do a lot more research before I announce anything like that though...

I've got 7 or 8 each of the Lindberg Goshawk and the Aurora F4B-4s in the stash, plus the Renwal Goshawk with that God-awful AeroSkin, all bought to make some 1/48 flight deck displays with several aircraft from the same squadron, any of those would be perfect for a Nostalgia group build.  Got the Fury and a couple boxings of the Gladiator, too.

The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen.
