(A)SW GBII - CLOSING

Hello everyone,

Slowly plodding along... the torpedo section is painted and  now needs to be put together. Of course, nothing fits. I added alot of extra detail to the torpedo tubes using extra PE from various tank kits, spare decals from some aircraft kit and solder for piping. I plan on making some blankets and pillows for the bunks using foil from a suture package and milliput. When I can, I have been doing some oil canning of the hull- man do I regret starting that! Since I started, I now have to finish it. I also ordered the engine section and it arrived last week. I need to add some chains hanging from the ceiling- does anyone know where I can get chains of the appropriate scale?  I'm going on holiday tomorrow to Newfoundland, so it will still be awhile before any major work will be completed.

Sorry i did not respond earlier. I just woke up after fainting with seeing these pictures. God it's so beautiful to watch..... Simply amazing.

Chains chains....chains.....

My first thought would be you can go two ways.... 

1. The bigger and or more sophisticated wooden ship building shops would carry chains for stuff like anchors... Maybe in certain scales these chains would resemble the size you need. A place to start from could be www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk even though this shop is situated in great britain. Just google something like "ship fittings" for a shop near you

2. I know my local jeweleryshop carries chains in different sizes in order to custom fit your neclace. Also steel and low grade silver. It could be a possibility to explore as well.

Hope this helps a little Rob. Some chains really would indeed look great in that interior.

Maxfax wow you have gone all out with that detailing man, looking top notch I am sayin.

I have built a few ships in my time and found some good looking chain of the right size at craft stores here, such as Michael's . You might try those stores before doin the mail order thing. They even have kits that allow you to make your own chain, that would be a thought too. Just browse the jewelry makin sections.

Thanks, guys! This GB is unfortunately pretty quiet, which is too bad because I am discovering that subs are pretty cool. I'm flying back to Ontario(and the heat) tomorrow from a very cool Newfoundland and I'll hit the craft stores. The time it has taken me to get to this point with the VIIc, I could have built two aircraft, and I still haven't actually started building the sub! I have my sights on Trumpeter's 1/200 Arizona on EBay for a good price, but that will be next year! Rob

My apologies about the ASW GB being slow going lately. I guess alot of it has to do with the topic being very specific.... Last year there were slightly more builders active but even then it was mostly smaller scale subs and the likes.

Personally i do not really mind. I love subs and what little is being built in this GB is being built by people sharing an interest in the topic and doing a darn fine job as well. In this case its about quality and not quantity

about the chains try to look at wood ships supplies sections on internet sellers.

I got the torpedo section together. I am going to reposition the lower torpedo- too much of the bad surface is visible. I made some lifting brackets using scrap PE and chain from Michael's- the smallest that I could fine- may be slightly large but pretty close. I will add some other detail like stowage/blankets later, but otherwise this section is done- I want to keep moving with the build. I've already started on the engine section- I'll post in a week or so.

Outstanding work on the sub maxfax......I am in summer mode now so not doing much building, and STILL waiting for decals for the Stoof.....be back at it hardcore in another month and get started on the Firefly

Hey Richard,

I picked them up at a craft store called Michaels- they are all over North America. They have a big selection of chains- I would have liked to get a smaller scale, but the one I bought will have to do.

Yess!!! gannet updates:

this time to avoid to fill engines details started to detail the torpedo/weapons bay.

i spotted a hole in the bay and used to drive cable to the gear wells, from reference pictures seems so.

also added some fuselage grip

that's all

tomorrow probably priming all and start the painting stage (engines!!!)

Bsyamato, i really love what you have done with the wiring running through the bomb bay, looks very realistic to me and it is most definately an improvement on the basic kit. Excellent work my friend and i hope the painting stage will go without problem Keep it coming!

not only you Richard  wips here seems stopped.

I just fear to not cover the wires with paint, they are really tiny. Left 8 months to the end, i think to finish before whishing to put a sub here if i get one.

I know my friend... it seems you and Rob are the only ones with a model right now, posting WIP's.... Hope that will change too but from what i understand there will be more builds as people finish stuff they are currently working on.

I have been wanting to build another sub myself and i just heard recently that revell will reissue the type VIIC in 1/72. And in my stash i have revell's S-100 with flak 38 patrolboat in 1/72 scale...pretty big model as well and rarely seen on here.

Hope to make another contribution myself soon but i am over committed to other stuff as it is....

Bsyamato I am guilty of lurking here but have been following your build, I am impressed with your detail work and cant wait to see your build all finished up. I too have trouble painting over wire detail but it always seems to work out especially if you use washes over it or dry brush it with a contrasting color.

I too am guilty of well, not sure I would call it over committing as much as health issues keeping me from building. I have my first sub builds in the wings for this group and a Destroyer. However before I build those I have a friend who sent me a RoG Spitfire I want to build, its really a sweet looking kit too. Just gotta finish a Yak-7 I am working on at the moment.

Thanx vetteman42 , the only chance to pop out the wires details is to paint with thinned color and after washing with a black lining between , wires are too little for drybrush soon updates, i'm just planning the primer.

Bsyamato-nice job! The wiring definitely improves the kit. I always mean to do that with my plane kits, but somehow I always forget. I am almost done the engine section, so hopefully I'll have pics up today. Richard, that drives me crazy about the re-issue! I spent a small fortune on EBay for mine. I am also looking at the S-100 in 1/72 scale. It looks amazing and would complement the u- boat. To finish off the trio, the HMCS Snowberry would great to get. I can't find one anywhere,do you have any leads???? Hopefully there will be a re-issue as well. Rob

Every now and then i see a snowberry on ebay but they are getting more scarce everyday as well as expensive.... They are bound to reissue it sooner or later though...such a beautiful kit...

Vetteman, which RoG kit are you building? Lately I have been watching eBay for 1/32 Revell kits, specifically the Mk 1 Spitfire, the Stuka, and the Fw-190F. These are all old kits, but I have seen some amazing work that very skilled modellelers have done with these kits. I'm starting to think like Hans, and would rather get these "cheaper" kits vs spending a fortune on one of the 1/32 tamiya kits. Maybe my mind will change when I actually get one...... Rob

Richard, any chance you could make that S-100 for this GB? I would love to see the WIP. There are some excellent PE kits for it. And if you don't build it now, let me know! Rob

Put me down for the ancient DML 1/700 USS Ohio and Alpha combo.  It's a kit I've been searching for, as it's got the only 1/700 Ohio boomer anywhere.  I've already started on the Alpha, man that thing is tiny compared the Ohio, and the Sea Wolf and Carter that I built for ASW I.

Maxfax Its the 1/48 RoG Spitfire Mk IXC/XVI gonna look cool swingin five blades from the nose. A very sweet looking kit as far as detail goes. I have waited too long to get this one started, my friend dun good sending me this one.

Vetteman, I built that kit for the Spitfire GB- it is an excellent kit- I heard it was a reboxed Hasegawa kit, but I'm not sure.
