Hey guys,

Working in my evenings during the week i have just finished the Wildcat's pit:

Had to mix my own bronze green and it could have been slightly more bronzy and a tad lighter but the flat white drybrush did help matters and the black wash gives it somewhat of a more worn feel. A nice feature that comes with the kit is the IP panel. The peforated dial holes are backed by a film with the dials printed on it. The lighting in my mancave didnt catch it quite well but it looks great!

Next stop will be the quite detailed engine...

You are very welcome and good luck! One note though if you are a first time user: Alclad is a "hot" paint. It will slightly bite into the undercoat. Therefore you will want to give it light misted on thin coats with a few minutes inbetween to let it sit down, slowly building up to the end result. Patience is your best friend here.

B17pilot,

As far as my knowledge (and opinion) goes either way would work. You can work with different shades of undercoat (greytones?) and then cover with your alclad or use different shades of alclad in succession picking out panels as you go.

Contrary to popular belief though i must say that the gloss black basecoat is not really neccesary. Only the high shine alclads need it. For instance their normal aluminium shade (alc101) doesnt need the black whereas their chrome finish (alc107) does. I found that, even though it makes the alclad 101 slightly richer in tone, another model i painted using my favourite (white) primer gave the same basic aluminum alclad satisfaction though slightly lighter in tone as one would expect. It does not affect the paint in terms of peeling off or behaving bad.

Just my 50 eurocents there...

OK, I was able to get the black base coat on, still need to sand it smooth, a little rough I would say.  It took two coats to cover it all.

First time Alcalad user question: I plan on using different shades to break up the single color look, so should I cover the whole thing in the main alunimum color and then go back with the different shades or leave the areas to be covered in different shades the black under coat?  Just asking cause from what I've read the base coat determines the exact color of the top coat, so I was just wondering if the main alunimum color would throw the other colors to come off.

I should point out that I'm pretty sure those were painted silver, it's not a true NMF, because bare metal and salt water spray don't mix.  Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but its my understanding that the Navy painted all their planes to prevent salt water corrosion.

Ghostrider what you say is true, quite a few WWII aircraft were painted with silver lacquer, most all of the Navy fighters were along with the Mustangs and some others. I have been allowing those builds because the pigment in the lacquer was aluminum powder, and the choice of subjects would be much smaller if I insisted on natural aluminum finished.

Doogs Musta been a small show huh ????

Toast

Actually it was bigger than Austin and there were some strong competitors. I'm kinda shocked I won! But thank god they divided up among allied and axis, since there were some sweet evil-planes!

Kbuzz nice work man and IMHO I would leave the finish as it is. The shades do seem to have contrasting changes in the light all of their own. And I know how hard those stripe decals can be to apply well, and you done good. YesYes

Guys the front page has been updated with your builds, and thank you for sharing them with us all.

Kermit Welcome Sign back there buddy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Looks like you jumped right in on your Wildcat, been chomping at the bit have ya to get building ???

Ok, a month away from the bench would motivate even me. Looks like a sharp kit, can't imagine a F4F would be all that big in even 1/32th. The clear cowling is an interesting feature.

 Furyan:

Love your pictures Doogs, thanks bro.

Hey also... (which is a GREAT help) that shot of P2... Im painting the exhaust stacks atm and I did the base black, which I though was wrong, but looking at the pic of the P2 Stang maybe the pipe shroud were actually black!   hmmm?

Don't know if I'd do black, but I certainly wouldn't do all shiny aluminum like the big Stang's instructions say (at least I think they do if I recall correctly)...if it helps I did mine in Alclad Steel, which is really dark...

Yeah cheers, Actually Ive repainted them  metallic grey.. with the underbase as black they look ok so far.

@Gamera,

Are you kidding me? Ive been away from modeling alltogether for six weeks, spent my time in a mountain cabin with only dial up so no FSM either...... Yes i would say i am all ready to sniff some paint now Eats Jetlag is as good as gone now that ive slept all through one night and had a working day go by with me feeling ok-ish.

So, time for the customary intro...

Boxart:

The finishing options are curiously enough the exact same as the Hobbyboss kit in 1/48... Think i will do the USS Wasp black tail again.

I refrained from taking shots of all the sprues. Instead i took a pic of the most interesting goodies: a small PE set (mostly for posing the elevators and rudder), rubber tires and a transparent cowling for thos that wish to show off the engine:

And lastly my progress sofar:

Not much to show yet but i can tell already that this kit should offer little problems in the assembly areaSmile

Ken:

Looks great to me! Don't see the silvering in the photos and great job on doing such a great job on some difficult stuff like the fusilage yellow band. Maybe a little wash would be nice but I wouldn't go too far, she looks fine as she is. Heart

Here's the final (maybe) touch on my Academy F-86.  Haven't done anything with panel lines or weathering yet - might leave it as is.  The build was nice until I got to the decals - some trouble with the big ones and a bit of silvering, but not too bad.  Paint was MM buffing metalizer with Future on top.  It seems that the Future dulls it a bit.

Nice one Doogs, nice looking award too!

It maybe just me but this build looks noticeably less weathered than your usual outputs.. am I wrong?? Dunno.

Looks great of course but your usual exhaust burn etc doesn't seem to be there. Is this the best way to win 1st places?? I remember something about a very 'straight' hell-diver taking out an award a while back..

You're not wrong. Definitely cleaner than anything I've built since my last Jug:

A couple of reasons...

1 - Time - I finished this one literally at 3:30 in the morning the day of the contest. So I was rushing it.

2 - Jugs - For all their insane engine, Jugs didn't exhaust much.

3 - The OD - This OD is really dark, so the sludge wash just doesn't really show.

4 - It was the CO's plane...and those were usually kept cleaner, so I err that way unless there's direct photo evidence, as with Petie 2nd:

5 - The photo reference I've got just doesn't show a very battered aircraft:

Could've added some chipping, especially that patch just aft of the canopy, but again, time ran out on me.

Not sure if there's a bias toward cleaner aircraft...but I'm sure I'll be putting that to the test come September at the next Austin show!

Guys,

Lovely builds going on at the moment! Each and everyone looks outstanding. Always such a pleasure to catch up on missed pictures and threads after a visit to the US...

Doogs,

What an amazing build and congrats on the well deserved win in San Antonio. This jug looks stunning! I am always a bit perplexed with the seamingly effortless quality you display in your builds... sometimes somewhat of a splash of water in the face of us lesser godsWink But always a joy to follow!

Well,... my plane landed back in amsterdam yesterday morning...got home...slept crappy and here i am all jetlaggy but eager to sink my teeth into a nice NMF. Time for my yellow wing 1/32 trumpy wildcat i say! I am getting the bench ready as we speak and i hope to start pumping out WIP's in short orderStick out tongue

Ya know, you build the engine and place the pit and that together binding into the fuselage.. no problem, yet when you want to do a little thing like insert the radiator vent in it cause the most probs to date hahahaaa. Heads up for those that are going to build this, so far.. make sure you file the insides of the duct back and get that photo etching as tight as possible to the side of the vent. Will help untolled Wink

Anyway, like Malcolm said.. "No effort No progress, and its worth the effect cause the end result looks good enough.

The 'stangs radiator~

Some WIP pics of my Sabre.sport short the low quality, but my wife had her phones and it's got the good camera.
First primer coat is done, and the external engine and tail cart are built.
