Tom: Yeah, that's what I need is a monster paint booth though it would help not to paint in my dusty basement. Still yeah Alclad is pretty easy to sand trash out and repaint.

 I also recommend Tamiya XF-69 NATO Black for tires. Looks quite nice.

So I know I said I didn't want to just work on "The Bug", but, well, I hate leaving a task unattended to...

Masked off the cowl (protecting decals with paper covers):

Masked and sprayed red triangles with Tamiya Flat Red with some Hull Red and Red Brown added to more-or-less match the decals:

Because of the way they line up, had to mask every other one, spray, then go back and mask the ones I'd missed.

End result:

Got a rare bit of daylight modeling in today since the wife took longer leaving Houston than she'd planned. Sprayed a filter of OD over the markings to fade them a bit. Unmasked the canopy. It's gettin' there...

Thanks! On a side note, I think it was Gamera that brought up flaking and alclad? I will very lightly sand my next NMF build's primer a bit, for adhesion reasons. For the most part, I have only had an issue with flaking on the leading edges, where I was handling it. I did have a tiny fleck come off around the taped areas for the OD, which caused me a bit of trouble. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to "seal" the alclad asap, before taping, etc.

I just got my alclad gloss in, so overcoat tonight, followed hopefully with the decals tomorrow, then light sheen, gear and bombs. She'll be done...er, almost. Carpet monster, or otherwise, ate my tailwheel gear strut. A call to Hasegawa today for a replacement part remedied that,...as well as an identical kit ordered, for an encore 1/32 Jug, "Wee Speck", soon.

Did some work on Lucky today.  Knee surgery tomorrow so I should be able to model without interruption!

I tried the Doogs method of preshading.

Life Color OD with some Faded OD 1 postshading.  My OD is significantly lighter than Doogs'

Tom - yeah, still need to do ordnance (bombs and bazooka rockets) too, and the bombs are still on the sprue tree. But definitely home stretch!

Once this one's wrapped I'll be doing some non Jugs, but I'm planning to do Trumpy's big P-47N before too long. Too many things up in the air for me to put a time to it though...

Well, I'll humbly slip in here with a couple photos of the start up of my Academy P-47N.

I have heard some disparaging remarks about this kit, so I had to find out for myself.  It's been setting in the stash for several years, and I just happened to have a Eduard interior zoom detail set for it.  I wanted to show the sidewalls of the cockpit.  The interior details are not all that bad for a cheap kit.

The IP painted up very well.  I used the painted toothpick rolled across the raised details to paint the panel.  It proved to be a very effective method.  The panel looked so good that I saved the Eduard panel for another day.  The cockpit worked nicely.  A combination of Eduard placards and handles, with some scratchbuilt stuff busied up the office.  Sorry, no photo.

The kit engine provides some nice detail also.  I added the ignition harness using 26 gauge speaker wire.  It's not real noticeable on the finished model, but it gives a lot of depth if you're looking close.

I've plugged along a little further, wings are all in place.  Cowl, gun barrel inserts, wing pylons are all in place.  I think I'm about ready to prime.  I'll be eventually finishing with an Alclad NMF.  Rick.

I’m calling the “Mystery Jug” done!  Getting the windscreen masked, painted, and reinstalled after I accidentally knocked it off took forever!  (It wasn’t for lack of trying, but rather lack of time.)

What did you use for the panel lines and overall weathering? Is that a bottle of Flory black, about halfway down? I really like those tail stripes. Congrats on finishing!

O- I think the 'O' stands for 'outstanding'! Great job, esp love the tail stripes- I have problems with stuff like that.

Guys, I think I've hit one of those modeling slumps here, sprayed white on the tail surfaces of '2 Big & 2 Heavy' as a undercoat since they're painted bright yellow and the paint cracked like crazy once it dried. Guess I'll have to sand the whole thing down and hope it doesn't happen again. I think it's the low humidity and the paint is drying too fast or some such. Kinda peeved and don't want to look at the model right now, I just feel a need to walk away for awhile.

O - GORGEOUS! Great job on the NMF, and I absolutely love the tail striping! I'll get it up on the front page!

Gamera - sorry to hear about the cracking - that's awful! My biggest environmental issue right now is moths. Friggin' things.

Satch - man you weren't kidding, that Lifecolor OD is definitely lighter than either OD I'm using! Looking forward to seeing it come through paint!

Bit more done on "The Bug" last night. Wash. Chipping. Guns added. Gear struts glued in. Still have to fix tires, tailwheel, canopy, inner gear doors, and paint and mount the bombs.

If your conditions remain similar, you may be able to use the same paint mix, but build up the colour in several mist coats to avoid the cracking....

Sounds like a good idea, I only have the cracking on light colours- I'm thinking it may be a result of spraying them heavier than I would a dark paint. I was thinking of mixing a little retarder into the paint hoping that if it dries slower I won't get the cracking. Still I don't think I can go wrong with a few extra mist coats either.

Tom, the weathering started out as an experiment.  I first sprayed the whole airframe with Alclad's micofiller white primer, then followed that with Alclad's White Aluminum.  Next, I used gloss black from Testors' little square bottles and shaded some panel lines.  Then I used various shades of White Aluminum mixed with different amounts of Alclad Steel to cover the panel lines and fill in the panels.  And talk about eagle eyed, yes, that's Promodeller...er...Flory's wash on my desk.  I mixed up a dark grey for the panel lines.  Streaking and staining were done with pastels and ink.

I painted them with MM OD, misted with MM "faded OD", then brushed with Burnt Umber oil.

Those bombs look sharp, I have to admit I tend just to paint them OD green and that's pretty much it. I suppose if you're going to detail up the plane you need to do the stuff hanging off the wing too. Good show!

Seems to have taken care of the problem, didn't sand down enough to get rid of all the cracking so I'm going to have to repaint them yet again but at least I'm now on the right track.

Tom-The bombs look VERY realistic, I'm gonna steal, I mean, liberate that idea for mine! I "chipped" mine the last time, but looking back I don't feel it is very realistic. Maybe on the fins where they banged around on the cart. Anyway, great work.

I finally got a new laptop and should be posting progress this weekend. As I said before, Some Punkins is done and I have moved on to Patsy. I'm lovin' the Tamiya kit! See y'all soon-

I 'almost' didn't use the decals, as many of the pics I've seen didn't have any yellow stripes, except for around the nose.

I'm going to try painting the splodey-things yellow, the masking the stripes on my Revellogram. We'll see. Still wish someone made the clusterbomb setup. Ton of work, but how awesome would this look?
