Thanks guys! Came totally out of the blue - I actually submitted months ago, and just found out probably a week before the issue came out. Definitely been a Jug-heavy couple of weeks!

wvp51 - Your Lindberg is totally welcome! What scale/type?

Its a 1/48 scale P-47D. I have heard less than stellar things about Lindberg kits...I opened up the box last night and could see why. Gonna take alot of paint and aftermarket decals for this one! Hopefully I can get it to turn out ok but my main aim for this build is to just have fun with it. I'm thinking invasion stripes but we'll see how it goes. Thanks for letting me in on the group build...its my first one.

kermiy- Excellent work you are doing, my friend!

WVP51guy- Welcome to the GB, I have seen the Lindberg on the shelf at my lhs and was wondering what could be done with it.

doogs- The tail stripes on Punkins are paint and decals. I first painted Insignia yellow, then used the Zotz black stripes. Other than a few adhesion problems (probably of my own doing) the decals laid down nice and only needed a little heat to conform to corners and such. Congratulations on FSM, nicely done!

Joe Rix- Thanks for the compliments. I bought the decal sheet for Chautauqua, but as soon as I saw Patsy I knew I had to build her. Eight Nifties should be quite the interesting nose art as well!

Doogs - Getting your P-47 in FSM is well deserved. Congrats!

Kermit - Very Nice work on that 1/72 Jug.

WVP51 - Thanks for joining us. Looking forward to seeing what you do with that Lindy.

Took some time this weekend to do a little testing and practicing with Alclad prior to actually shooting it the model. Broke out a "stunt" kit and sprayed one part with Alclad Black primer. It went on very grainy, most likely a product of holding the airbrush to far away. But it sanded and polished nicely. I then sprayed another part with Tamiya Gray primer as this was also recommended on the Alclad website. Only required a quick swipe with a polishing pad. I then sprayed both with Alclad aluminum. Both produced very nice results but it seems to me the Tamiya gray produced the smoothest and cleanest finish. Thus. I believe I'll prime with the Tamiya gray. I must admit that I am hugely impressed with Alclad and its finish.

Richard: Hey, looking good!

WVP51: Welcome and good luck. I too have never had much luck with Lindberg kits.

Joe: You know every time I've used the Alclad black it orange peeled on me. 'Course I've been having the same problem with a lot of gloss paints. The Alclad grey primer works great though, it dries with a little rough sorta orange peelish finish but a little buffing with fine sand paper ends up a great smooth even finish.

Got my copy of FSM yesterday and congrads Doogs on 'Hairless Joe'- beautiful model and great photo! Just wish they'd printed a bigger picture but I'm just nitpicking. Yes

So...don't know if anyone's seen yet, but Great Models is doing free shipping all this week. I took advantage to splurge on PCM's Reggiane Re.2005.

Only tangentially relevant, but interesting little tidbit I thought I'd share - the Re.2005 is actually a sort of distant relative of the P-47. Both were largely evolved from Seversky designs, including the P-35 (Reggiane's designer came from Seversky...). You can see the common DNA in the shape of the wings and stabilizers, and to a lesser extent the tail (the Re.2005's more resembles the P-35's tail, but still).

A day of EPIC Failures.  First my air compressor went TU.  Then I tried putting decals on the Jug and they crumbled to pieces.  Super Scale Int usually puts out good sheets but these were either old or substandard.  Total fail on every one, except the white background to all 28 kill markings.  Go figure.

So I have to buy a new compressor.  The new Grex is sweet.  I have to find alternate markings for the Jug.  Either find another Robert Johnson sheet or try to remove what's on and start over with a different bird.  UGGG!

Satch: I know what you mean- sometimes I need a hobby to de-stress from my hobby...

This isn't even in the same league as what happened to you but still-  last night I went and airbrushed a M-16 from a large figure gunmetal and then was going to mist a little Alclad duralumium on for highlights and the airbrush suddenly just went WHOOP and sprayed full force all over the M-16. I had to just put it down and walk away.

Dunno what happened it, the airbrush is a GREX XL too, and I love that baby. Confused

Doogs: Interesting, I can see the resemblance there. Looks like the Re.2005 is the aircraft in the before and the P-47 is after gaining a bunch of pounds and chunking up Smile Burger

Satch,  I feel your pain!   I was going to decal my Academy P-47N with the kid decals, but they splintered badly.  I've got all the paint on the bird, so I' m going to try to piece together a fictitious aircraft from that squadron.  It should be all right.  Rick

Nice to see everyone coming along. Congrats Doogs. Saw your build in FSM!

Well, folks. "Jabo" is finally done. 7 weeks Whew!.1/32 Hasegawa P47D.

Alclad NMF. Various colors. Duraluminum, Aluminum dark aluminum, over Airframe Aluminum.

I did the panel lines with Flory Concrete, which is a subtle dark grey. Yellow Ochre oil on the underside, with a bit of burnt umber mixed in in parts. Slight pastels here and there. Overcoat was Alclad light sheen.

I used the kit decals for the insignia. Super Scale for the rest. Thanks for taking a look!

Dave: No idea on round 2. I'm certain Doogs will be back around soon though to answer your question.

Guys, I think I finally lost what little mind I had... I went out and blew part of my 'rebate' check where I overpaid the US government on Vintage Fighter Series 1/24th scale P-47D. She came today and Censored the friggin' kit is indeed 1/24- twice as long and with twice the wingspan of a 1/48th kit. It's bigger than the foot long sub I had for supper...

Gamera, you certainly didn't "blow" your refund on a 1/24 Jug! Toast That is a wise investment, in my book! What a monster. Now this...I gotta see!

Gamera - Very Awesome. Money well spent indeed. I do hope you have the display space for that beast because I would get this question from my wife (after "How much did you pay for that!'): ' And , just where do you plan on putting that thing?'

Yeah with SXSW going on, forum time has been screwy. To be honest, it's only march and we've got a whole other nine months to go, so I haven't really thought about round two. Definitely within the realm of possibility, though.

20" wingspan is pretty crazy...especially when you consider a 1/32 Jug is  50% bigger than 1/48 - 15" span vs.  10", and looks MASSIVE.

Dying to see just how big that 1/32 B-25 is when it arrives. 25" wingspan!

Panzerpilot,

Looks like a winner to me! Love the markings too. Congratulations on a very nice and well executed modelYes

Gamera,

1/24 you say?Indifferent That's a whopper allright... Gonna be fun fun fun though building it!Wink Are you planning any aftermarket goodies for it too?

Well,... My little 1/72 juggie is starting to look like something. I hope to have her ready for the booth somewhere tomorrow. I did decide to fill up the holes where the underwing pilons go because those had some nasty sinkmarks in em...unusable.. Instead ill go for either a model without the ordnance or a single droptank under the fuselage.

Sorry about one or two being blurry.. I just shot em quickly on the bench... Lastly i did find a profile pic of the plane im going to try to paint:

Hope you like my choice guys,

Richard

Richard: Looking good! I like that French machine, very colourful and not something you see everyday.

Doogs: I assume you're going to post photos of the B-25 when she comes on your blog? I've heard so much about these kits and would like to know what you think about her.

I don't think there are any aftermarket sets for 1/24 so I'm going to see what I can whip up myself. I want to go with real fabric seat belts for one. And I intend to install a small electric motor to turn the prop and am thinking of using fiber optics for the lights. The kit set me back about  $120.00 US which is way more than I'd normally pay but gee friggin' whiz it's GIGANTIC. And I'm not sure Vintage Fighter Series is even still in business, when I picked it up I figured if I don't build the thing in 5-10 years I can flip it on ebay for twice what I paid for it.

Howdy Gents,

Some great builds i've seen come out of this forum - i just can't believe how quickly some of you can build!  Whilst i haven't posted anything thus far, i have been diligently checking in on this thread.

Ok, so, i've decided to change my build from Tamiya's 1/48 P-47M to their 1/48 P-47D.  (DoogsATX - hope this is ok).

The reason?  My girlfriend bought me the P-47D for my birthday last year and has been asking why it isn't built, so i thought i'd better build it!  I was hesitant, because of it's NMF, but thought i'd have to do a NMF one day, so why not as part of this GB?

So, here's the model:

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

Sprue has finally been cut over the weekend and here is the cockpit thus far:

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

**Note that awful discolouration on the left - i was too heavy handed with the Dullcoat.  However, i don't think it will be too noticeable once the pit is all sealed up.  Also, the pic tends to over-exaggerate it.

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

 [View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

I love the decals for the instrument panel - easily the best detailed i've ever built so far.

I subsequently added drops of clear gloss to the dials for a bit of a glassy look.

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

I've noticed the joystick needs a bit of a touch up - bare spot from cutting off the sprue.

Apologies for the poor quality pics - normally use an SLR, but it's currently with my father, so the ol' point and shoot is all I have to work with...

I'll keep posting updates, but i think i'll still be struggling to finish in time.

Look forward to seeing the other builds come along.

Richard - the Lafayette Escadrille, eh? Just so happens I'm very seriously eying on of their earlier chariots for the P-40 GB, a P-40F-5 conversion from the Hasegawa P-40M kit:

Gamera - you better believe I'll be posting pics! I'm planning to shove it to the front of the line when it comes...looking like mid-Aprilish at this point.

cml - switching ain't a problem, though you could've kept the -M in play and built it as a D-30 with the tail fillet. Any idea what markings you're thinking about?
