Tonight I decided to work on the missiles and pylons that I had glued together some time back.  I had used my mix of cement and putty to glue them together, so edge cleanup was easy with some sanding and polishing.

The Eduard PE set for the Flanker's exterior has some stuff for the missiles and pylons, so I spent some time getting that stuff in place.  I used slow-setting CA followed by Future floor polish as glues for the PE, I hope they hold in the long term...

The big, pretty missiles with PE enhancements shown with a previously finished version without PE.

A closer look at the decorations...  Because of their delicacy, I haven't yet added the PE parts that attach the missile to the PE rails.

The Eduard set has PE for some of the kit's various missile pylons and rails, but not all of them.  So either they slacked off, or I'm missing a fret and another page of instructions... but based on what I see, I can easily replicate the missing parts with spare PE.  I shaved off the missile-mounting tabs from the bottom of the pylons and replaced them with folded PE parts that actually resemble launch rails.  The folded rails are wider than the pylons, so centering them is important.  There's also a bunch of tiny PE chips that look like mounting lugs to be attached to the sides of the pylons.

Even without the added attachment parts, I think that this looks pretty trick for the amount of PE added to achieve the effect.  And they're certainly an improvement over the kit's default arrangement with the tab-and-slot system.

So that's that for now...

Kaiyudsai, I haven't seen the Wolfpack resin wells, but if they are anything like the Aires set then go for it!             I have the Aires stuff, which I still may use on this kit, and it is really well detailed.  The fit is a little off and would require a fair amount of gap filling to get them just right.

Bsyamato, I've seen what you've been up to in other GB's and I can't wait to see what you do in this one.  That Mary is fantastic.

Pretty planes?   I have two more sets underway!  On one of the new sets I'm thinking of a table-top aerial display using wires, a mounting board and something odd in the way of paint.

Marc- that is awesome!  I'm just blown away by the fact that it's 1/48 and not the bigger scale- the PE work is outstanding.  You have more patience than I- there's a lot of work in yours that I'd find to be nigh-on impossible in 1/32.

If you PM me your addy, I'll send you one of the minis.  You want to choose, or surprise package?       Surprise package determined by d12 (-1 mod) roll!  (you might need to look back through the thread to see all 11 of them, sorry)

These three need to be numbered and finished before they join the second group:

As for my own big bird...

I got some of the basic Eduard PE work done in the cockpit and have mocked in the bang seats for show-

And I've done up the wheels wells; I think that I'll add some generic wiring bundles to each for effect.               I have a decent ref book to work from so it won't be total BS.  The staining is done with Tamiya clear smoke.  Once I've finished wiring the wells I'll go back with a sludge wash and really muck them up.

I went with a lighter shade of grey for the interior spaces and a brighter shade of green for the tubing on this than I did in the Su-27B kit, otherwise I've done them both the same.  For comparison, the Su-27B's wells-

Additionally, I've been assembling the various wings and control surfaces.  They're just large slabs of aerodynamic plastic for now, so no pics.

Greetings! I am joining the GB as of today. I am building the eduard Su-27UB. I started on it the other day to find that the instructions are incorrect in the PE part numbers. Eduard has fixed the instructions and reposted them on the website to download as a PDF. I will be getting going on it today. I plan to paint one of the blue cammo schemes. Looking forward to my first ever GB!

Cheers,

Oscar

In other news, I finally resumed work on my 1/32 Su-27UB kit today.  A light grey base coat for the interior surfaces and lightened haze grey in the cockpit to match the color of the Eduard PE were done via AB and some crude seam filling on stuff with a slurry of Testor's liquid cement and green putty.  Now let that stuff thoroughly dry for a few days before tampering with them further... back to the 1/350 fleet.

Kaiyudsai- I think that you'll enjoy the big Trumpeter's, even with the shortcomings.   They're BIG, but for their size quite easy to assemble (more so than many other 1/32 kits that I've done) as most everything fits as it should.  There will be seams, but a slurry of Testor's liquid cement and Squadron green putty goes a long way in fixing most of them so there isn't too much after the fact seam filling.  The only areas that required extra seam work on my Su-27B (I haven't yet sealed up my Su-27UB C) was at the rear where the flaperons mount, the exhausts and the stinger.  The wing seams aren't bad, but careful assembly ought to fix them.

Aside from looking at the sprues and comparing them to the -27UB, I haven't yet gotten into their Su-30MK yet, but it looks to have incorporated some of Zactoman's fixes (and he is not happy about that!).

Wolfpack has listed a resin cockpit for the -30MK but I haven't seen it listed as ready for sale yet...

Thanks......   Do you mean the flaperons???   i got those from quickboost.....   they are Resin.......

Yes   all that detail comes with the Aires set... it is a great cockpit.. amnd probably one of Aires' best ones... however there is some fit problems....  the base needs to be sanded down almost to the point of the bottom being sanded out... to accomodate the nose gear.... nest time I build this kit i will remove the front nose wheel well and replace it with a thinner scratchbuilt one or resin.... the kit well is incorrect anyway..

as far as wing drop... Im not sure what you are talking about.....   I find the wings have the appropriate angle...   at least compared to all of the CADD drawings I have aquired.... This kit is not without it's problems though.... the vertical stabs have some definite issues....  panel lines are way off on them....   the LERX is also a bit off....  and the nosecone needed to be replaced....   I also found the intakes to be poorly constructed...

Im building the 32 scale trumpeter one next   as well as the Su-30..... I have all the zactoman corrections... Hands down this trumpy kit is the best Flanker kit in any scale.....    but I think the Academy kit comes in second.....  for the most part it is a pretty good base kit....  but it def needs alot of aftermarket to be acceptable  IMO...       But I think this kit is a very challenging build seamwise... and you def need to be good at rescribing... something I am lacking in....      I still have a few things to finish on this build.... i tabled it to complete my 32 scale Mig-29K... I just needed to put the Flanker down for a while.... Ive been at it for 4 months straight...

Dre, 3 more very interesting mini-Flankers!
kaiyudsai, that is some beautiful paintwork
JohanT, breaking open the Eduard kit Big Smile

I think I'll be wrapping up some other projects soon that will make room for my Flanker (That He177 takes up a lot of room on the bench!!), itching to get into it, already cleaned up the cockpits but haven'treally assembled anything yet.

I had hoped to pick up some of the Modelmaster enamel Flanker colours while in Halifax a few weeks back, none in stock. Now thinking - if I have to mail-order anyway - about the colours from White Ensign Models. Does anyone have any experience with them?

On the bench: Airfix 1/72 Wildcat; Airfix 1/72 Vampire T11; Airfix 1/72 Fouga Magister

Everyones kits are coming along nicely. Love the rich bright colors that  the AKAN paints gave you.  Which paint numbers did you use?  I have looked at the Linden Hill Imports site and am trying to decide which ones to order.

My work / life have kept me away from the bench for the past month, but hopefully I will be able to get some time in this weekend, I shall take some pics and post some progress.

Great looking progress kayudsai!
A couple of quick questions for you;
The detail you are showing on the elevators, would you have some breakdown drawings?
All that  excellent canopy detail, does it come from the Aires set?

Lastly - I have some mayor problems with wing drop on the 2 main parts.
How have you Academy and Eduard guys correct that?

Very Best Regards
Johan

Can't wait to see the finished plane as it looked absolutely fantastic in the previous pics that you've shown us.

I can relate to your contest woes- there's a local contest next weekend- one that I have been looking forward to all winter and have been trying to get a few things entered and now I have to travel out of town with the old lady...

It's funny that you mention the 1/48 as a practice run- I've been looking at these 1/350 birds as paint tests to see what color combinations/camo schemes look good.

If you don't mind my asking- how much of the Zactoman replacement resin did you get?    Too bad Trumpeter seems to have been copying his corrections...

I ended up not going.....   My daughter got sick so I stayed home and helped out....  anyway.. project got backburnered except for final stuff like pitot tubes and ordinance..... anyway,,,,   It really came out nice...  I have a few issues...  but as a whole... it turned out nice....ALOT of time into it....and I leaned ALOT during this build.... I have a 1/32 flanker that I am building with every bit of premium AM. inclusing all the zactoman corrections    this 1/48 scale one was a small scale proactice run...     I will load my final pics and pint out my problem areas  so people can learn from my errors.... cheers

Bsyamato, those are giveaways as well.   They won't be exact to the color profiles, but I'll try to get them close so stay tuned!

Owl- I still have nightmares that I owe 3 more hours for my degree, that a mistake had been made when issuing the paper!  Even when it's over, it ain't over...Sad   Good luck with the studies- we'll still be here over the summer.

Using some color profiles that I downloaded from http://www.mars.slupsk.pl/fort/sukhoi/, I printed some 11x17 pages to use as guides for the next batch of 1/350 Sukhois.  I chose some of the more colorful and off-beat schemes rather than the usual Russian or Ukrainian birds.

Then I put down some base colors on Saturday and then worked on the bottom colors on Sunday.   There's 7 different custom paint mixes in play here...

Still have to work up a bunch of Tamiya tape masks, then I can begin to shoot some camo on them.  My hands aren't steady enough to hand-paint the camo.

So... that's that for now.

Hey guys, I just found this site while looking for different colors schemes for Flankers

http://www.mars.slupsk.pl/fort/sukhoi/

It has pretty much everything we'll ever need in so far as national markings and basic colors go and even has info on bort numbers, delivery numbers and whatnot.  Click on one of the side profiles to bring up a nice, printable scale rendering of that scheme.

There's some interesting schemes in there- the African and Asian birds are especially colorful compared to the ex-Soviet bloc states.

Hope it helps someone!

Oh, that's nice.   I envy you for not having to fill wing root seams- are the bottom of the wings molded onto the bottom fuselage as well, or are they separate parts?

Those resin bits look great- it's a toss-up between resin and PE when it comes to this sort of thing.  Preprinted PE looks fantastic, but flat whereas the resin looks fantastic as well but is more of a PITA to paint cleanly.

Get cracking, because once you finish your kit and post the pics, I'll send you one of these minis just for participating in this GB!  1st. finisher gets #01 and so on.

All you have to do is participate, finish the kit and then PM me if you want one!

Hi all,

Here are some sprue shoots of the Eduard/Academy SU-27.

First a view on the upper and lower hull, cast in light blue;

Second picture, in different light it looks much more greyish...

Some of the changed detail, the wheels and seats are reqorked from the Academy;

Seat detail;

Wheel detail;

Tube detail, this is a Brassin (Resin) part;

The Seat, reworked on the sprue but supplied in even better detail in Resin;

The rear wall, again a Resin part;

I would have shown the canopy but I had to return it since the front part was missing on the sprue.

Looking forward to getting this started now, just curioues why they have choosen not to include the side panel instruments in printed etched material rather the resin?

Never mind - on with the build :)

Very Best Regards

Johan

Johan, you're not late- you still have until the end of the year to complete your bird for this GB.

Could you post some 'in the box' shots as I'd like to see what is in the box for that price tag.  Is this the kit that has the wings molded with the fuselage as one BIG piece, or is another kit that I'm thinking of?

What's wrong with the kit parts?   It seems that everyone's Flanker kits have some sort of misshape or too-short nosecone (that pitot tube seems to throw everyone off).   I don't know if Zactoman is making 1/48 resin replacements...

Hi guys,
Thanks for letting me in this late, I am very much looking forward to this :)

Just opened up the box on the Academy licence Eduard kit.
And found that the debate about the kit being pricey is not true in my case - I have 2 bags of Brassin Cool
I could post some sprue shots if you guys are interested. The rest of the kit is pretty much Academy with some odd decision making.
The wheels are replaced and are now 2 part plastic.
The tube has been redefined and so the seat - but both are replaced with Brassin parts.

I deffo need a  new canopy and a new nose cone, any advice out there Indifferent

Very Best Regards

Johan
