Vance, if you haven't yet done the fins, I can send you some 1/32 black stripes from my spare decals..
I have plenty on hand from Trumpeter. You want 'em, I will send them with the mini.
Hmmm live rounds = no stripes... approved!!! Seriously considering cannibalizing some black decal letters/numbers. Applying them to the front of the fins would be MUCH easier than painting straight lines...
On the bench: Airfix 1/72 Wildcat; Airfix 1/72 Vampire T11; Airfix 1/72 Fouga Magister
Oh, those are a *&^%$ to mask, or hand paint. And, sometimes they're almost black in color and others I've researched are a natural metal color (looks like burnished steel).
When I did the last batch of missiles for Flanker #2, I painted that section MM Gunmetal, masked and then shot the endless layers of Tamiya flat white. I will use a darkened Steel color on the next batch as Gunmetal is too dark for my tastes.
Also, the three or four black stripes around the missile body indicate a training round while the live rounds are apparently all white.
Dre How many layers of white did those take?
How many layers of white did those take?
One coat of primer, two brush coats coats of flat white enamel. Just enough tone showing through from the primer to make them not pure white. Lost our electricity for awhile least night so no model work done, hoping to get back to this tonight. trying to decide how I want to tackle the dark strip on the leading edge of the missiles' "fins".
Don't feel bad- most of us have been too busy doing other things to get anything done on our models as well.
Been away from the bench for too long, although now that I am on holiday leave I should be able to crank out the rest of the Su-47 for this one. Not really any updates since my last postings.
Matt
Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum videtur!!! - Anything said in Latin sounds profound!
Dre And easier to finish too!
And easier to finish too!
Well uhh, gee.... hadn't thought of that....
They just look so graceful with wheels up...
Well... I finally closed the fuselage on Flanker #2 last night. Some progress is being made although I'm tempted to do this one wheels-up as well.
True, closing in on it, hopefully taking "finished" pictures this weekend.
Details, details....
Yep, so do i, glad i went that route now that it's closing in on the finish line. A few more panels to pick out, some panel line highlights, weapons & final clear coat. (ohh, and the base!)
Nice save on the false canopy Vance. I like the oversprayed, faded effect that you've got going on.
I need to get a canopy glued onto your mini....
Owl!! Thanks - you must be cramming for exams these days??
taxtp Pretty good looking aircraft Vance. It's an interesting scheme, isn't it. Good save on the false canopy too, if you hadn't said so, I wouldn't have realised about the shape difference. Cheers Tony

Oh yes, once I started researching, I couldn't pass up the Ukrainian colours, very attractive. My masked false canopy is a little too wide, but even among Flankers it doesn't seem that common. I doubt most folks will be able to tell that it's too wide.
me gusta!
------------------------
Now that I'm here, where am I??
I'm just taking it one GB at a time.
Alright, deep breathing exercises completed, progress can be reported. So, the bad news - the Ukrainian bird I picked had a false canopy painted on the underside. Dropped the decal in warm water for 12 seconds, just like all the others and... DISASTER! Didn't just crack, it disintegrated. So, taking a deep breath, I masked & painted with my topside dark blue. Now that I'm looking at the decal pics again, it's not quite the same shape, but it'll do.Got decent results on the heat-staining effect - a couple different silvers & gunmetals, tried a couple of washes which helped some, then finished of with Tamiya weathering pastels...Also used the "rust" weathering pastels on the gunmetal area around the cannon. Looks a little grainy in the picture, but has the right effect "in person"...Almost time to unmask the canopy.Rudders dry-fitted in place. Looking like a clean joint. Easier to store on the workbench this way, will be the last thing I attach before my overall clear coats.
As you may or may not be able to tell above, I left all the stencil decals in place, overcoated them to give the appearance of faded-out stencils. I've also picked out some of the small access panels with lightened or darkened versions of the surrounding paint. Will be hitting the (raised) panel lines with a dark pencil next.
Well... I've returned to the two-seater that started all this. I got too wrapped up in other things and let it stall. There will be more pics to come.
i have some secret
What's about your flanker? finished and only a picture??
rtoo speed makes ugly results, too relax don't make results
I don't see how you can fit anything into a 1/72 cockpit, let alone scratch the interior... but keep it up!
Great and good updates guys
Hope some progress soon.. actually scratchin the ejection seats rows i see it in some picture but it's hard to build and fit in the cockpit
Awesome Dre, love your work !
Taxtp- no worries on the time frame as I've extended it into next year.
Reminds me I haven't started mine yet. Its a bummer about the roundels Vance, but the rest looks good to me.
Thinking I may stop where I am and do some over-spraying.
