DJF - I'll agree, great work!  And I, also, detect a creative soul at work in your daughter's camo pattern.

Ordie: Thanks, yeah about the only thing that beats a shark mouth is a pretty gal in her birthday suit!

I think you'll like the Hasegawa kit, other than the plugs (which I may have screwed up myself) the kit went together great. I added some PE to mine but frankly the cockpit looks good enough that it doesn't really need it all that much.

I finally got the box open and some parts off the sprue, LOL!  Big Smile

This is my sixth build, fifth plane.  It's my first three-color camo paint job, and it is my first Hasegawa build.  (Don't like the tail plug deal already, but am moving forward with an open mind.)   All my previous aircraft have been Revell kits.  After lawdog114's beautiful build, all I can say is, I'm going to do my darnedest to not totally embarrass myself ... Embarrassed

I've been following along - there must be several of you build-mates about to enter 'completed' status.  Looking forward to seeing more of all your great work.

Gamera - I'm digging the 'alternative' P-40 nose art ... not that I've anything against the old shark mouth, LOL!

DJ: Nice work! Looking forward to seeing how she looks with the green sprayed on and seeing an update on your daughter's fighter.

I started painting the camo.  I got the tan on and masked it for the dark green.  But Isaac was close enough to make it a bit too wet and windy to finish the painting.  Hopefully it will be dry enough this weekend to go out and spray the green.

My daughter has not had a chance to work on hers since our last update.  She still needs to mask the bottom so I can spray the top.

Thanks Pzl66, other than the fuselage plugs she's been an enjoyable build so far.

Eric: Hopefully the RRB will be back around soon. As he said he's been having some problems with the new format. The P-36 sounds pretty cool to me if he allows it.

RRB, I'm down for a P40C but I left it Minnesota. Just bought an Academy P-36 Hawk (which I could do in French colors). Not a P-40, but we're kind of talking William Pitt, or Helmut Moltke or Pliny - The Elder. What do you think? We getting tired of olive drab?

RRB: It's not a problem! Maybe you could just check the forum twice a week or so? Things aren't moving that fast here.

I'm very sorry about my in-activity, could anyone who who is not on the roster tell me? I would appreciate it very much and I would save me changing in and out of the pesky mobile site.

Well my P-40N is painted and but I need to clear some photos from my camera's memory card before I can take photos so I went ahead and started decaling her. Will get photos up when I get off my butt and copy my photos over to DVD-rom...

We got the wings on and are ready to paint.

We got the base coat on, but then ran out of tape, so we will have to wait to paint the camo.

Good to see you again RBB, I'd thought you'd left with the forum change till I checked and saw you'd been on about a week ago.

Welcome back!!! Hopefully things will sort themselves out eventually.

I'm sorry I haven't been active at all really. This mobile site sucks and is a pain in the neck to navigate through.

DG & Frightful: Nice work guys, really coming along!

Sprayed the underside of my P-40N today and will hopefully have some photos up when I get the topside painted.

My daughter got the pilot set and closed up the fuselage.

Then we started on our wheels.  She is doing her wheels up.  I had to paint the wheels because Revell decals have the wrong color.

Hi DJ

I'm glad to hear you're building it with your daughter. I think its a great hobby to share and great for your daughter to get some one on one 'daddy' time.

Cheers

Tony

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

Thanks Ordie.  We are having a blast with this build.  This is her second model.  On her first, the only thing I did was spray it.  She did all of the hand painting, cutting, gluing, and masking.  I think on this one she is strong enough to do her own spraying.

We got a bunch done in the last couple of days.  I will post more pictures tomorrow.

DJinFlorida

We have our pilots done.  I am overcoming some shoulder issues which is causing my right hand to be numb, so the detail isn't where I want it, but this is proving to be pretty good physical therapy.  Sorry about the low quality photos, all I have is an iPhone.

The figures look good to me - keep it up Smile.  Also, how fortunate you and your daughter are, to have this activity together.  It's what the world needs more of ...

I got the fuselage together.  It was not a great fit.

I need to fix the seam and paint the headrest in the cockpit.

Also, the left half had a defect at the front, which left a hole that will need to be filled.

I will paint over the green chromate under the rear glass now that I know the paint guide is wrong.

Next up is the wings.

I'd like to contribute the Academy 1/72 P-40M/N please. At this stage I'm thinking RAAF, but that may change.

Cheers

AVG (Flying Tigers) Info

This site has the pilot, plane, tail and fuse numbers.

Fuselage Band Colors:

 1st  = White

  2nd = Blue

  3rd = Red

Some of the AVG Hawks may be in these pictures taken at the Curtiss Factory in spring of 1941.

Revell Decals

Angel (sitting) and 5 kills = Fuselage # 77 Pilot R. T. Smith CAF(Tail) # P-8173*

*Crashed on take off, Engine Failure, 23 February '42

Tail (Chinese Air Force) # P-8127* = Fuselage # 47 Pilot R. T. Smith

*This plane was transferred from 2nd Squadron to 3rd. It still carried Bert Christman's pedaling Panda (for John Petach). It was updated with repainted fuse band and Angels (standing) added to the nose. It also had 10 kill marks 1/2 the size of the 5 from P-8173

Fuselage # 14 = P-8127 after the take over by the USAAC

Wheel Decals = Wrong Should be Red, White, and Blue. 3rd Sq. had these. 1st and 2nd had either Brown or Gray wheel covers.

Roundels = ? Some 2nd squadron planes had oversize underwing roundels. The standard was about 36" so about 3/4" for the model. The camo stencils Curtiss used marked out around the RAF roundel position where the decal instruction sheet shows. The CAF roundels were actually painted further out on the wings and partially overlapped the masked out portion.

I hope all that helps any and all out there.
