JailCop

Hey guys, sorry I haven't posted any WIP yet, but construction on my Monogram F-86 Sabre is complete, and the Aluminum buffing metalizer sprayed on nicely, along with the metalizer sealer.  I don't like the kit decals, so now I'm waiting for some aftermarket ones to arrive!

Hi JailCop,

Nice looking F-86!  Good job!  Yes  Look forward to seeing a picture of it when it is done.

JC: The sabre is looking good, did you buff any of the panels before you sealed it?

KBuzz: Starting to resemble an airplane, nice detail. Those intakes look real flush. If you get that resin attached as neatly as those, it'll look factory.

Jailcop - that Sabre is looking nice.  Yes  I've also had good luck with the buffing metalizer - used it on my Academy F-86 and several others.

Gamera - The A-20 is coming along great.  I think the Havoc and Invader were good lookin' aircraft.  A long time ago, my unit had an A-26 Invader (aluminum finish, tho).

Keep up the good work, guys.

I have a little more progress on the TF-102:

JC: Nice looking NM there!

Guys, here's where 'Ridin' High' currently sits. You should be able to see part of the white strip I messed up on the tail fin. Sorry the photo is a little blurry since I didn't feel like setting up the tripod.

Hey Ken,

Hadn't posted much since not much to report. Put down the last decal (a skull on the tip of the nose with the guns coming out the eye sockets, how cool is that???)  last night. I've got a few problems like a white stripe on the tail that's crooked I need to clean up.

Hope everyone else is doing well.

Hi Everyone!

Tonight I painted the smaller diameter wire yellow.  Now I will wait for it to dry and then cut another thin strip of electrical tape and see if it turns out a small enough size to pass for 1/48 scale.  I did buy a cheaper brand of electrical tape, but it is the same thickness.  I did think of another idea.  My Dad and I used to paint cars and we would use a special pin stripping tape for detailing.  I will stop by the auto paint shop and pick up some black and try it.

So how is everyone else doing?

Son Of Medicine Man

Greetings everyone!

I apologize for being missing in action for the last two weeks.  The stress level at work has been incredible!  I actually thought I was nearly out of a job there for a while.  But things have finally settled down.  I need to learn to not worry about things that I have no control over.

Cliff:  Great work on your Havoc!  Looks very nice indeed!

Buzz (the other Ken):  Wonderful craftsmanship!  In your remark about the putty, were you referring to the brand of putty or just putty in general not working with resin?

Dom:  You are the master of putty my friend!  On the subject of the trip to the museum, I would rather stay away from the weekend unless someone specifically said that was the only time they could come.  Then by all means I would be all for the weekend.  It is a lot less crowded during the week than on the weekends.

Well as for my progress, school and work is still getting in the way.  I am once again remoting into the servers at work.  Then I have my final exams coming up in three weeks.  Once that is over then I am free and clear.  I will try to get something squeezed in before that.

Ken

Forgiven Ken;

Yeah, I try not to worry about stuff I can't control either, but I seem to worry less about the stuff I have control over, because that usually works out okay.......until pieces of my neighbors' houses landed in my yard, I never worried about tornados either......yeah, I do fear the unknown....only thing I fear more is the almighty.......man, talk about the power to taketh away........lol....still employed myself.......lol....

All the best with your studies and exam. I know you are going to ace those tests Ken!

Weekday idea sounds okay, 'cept the traffic....lol.....I liked that little off site hotel. Mind you, breakfast was great but the bar staff was better at the OC.

Earlier is ok.  Then I may still have a few $ left after all the stuff I have to pay for every month.  I might even have enough to pick up a souvenir kit. lol.  If we do it on a weekend so more folks can come along, then the 9th. would be better for me.  I don't get my Disability check until the 4th. so I couldn't do it on the 2nd.

Kbuzz: Great, she's coming right along! Never heard not to use putty on resin, I've done it before without any problems.

People here doubt the power of PUTTY?

Another shot from Berny...????

Here's a little more progress on the TF-102.

The wing and the aft fuselage are now glued (thin liquid glue).  A bit tricky but a good fit.

DSC01866.jpg 1866

And inlets are attached to the resin forward fuselage (CA glue and Squadron putty).  After doing this, I read somewhere that this putty doesn't work with resin, but ignorance is bliss 'cuz it worked just fine for me.

More later, Buzz

Guys, I think I've seen it on a B-24 too. I'm not sure how long it was used, I guess the green was supposed to break up the edges of the aircraft, I'm not sure how effective it was though.

That is an unusual colour of paint and limited camo scheme, who knows, maybe USAAF found a few thousand gallons in a Douglas warehouse somewhere....a rare subject.

Alot of medium bombers had that scheme at one point. By B-25 has a scheme like that, but im going with the standard OD over NG with no real embellishments.

BC: Thanks! I just pre-shaded her, and added a little streaking. I'm not sure how visible it is in the photos but the aircraft has that weird medium green spots camo on the wing leading and trailing edges and tail. Seems the USAAF dropped that fairly quickly and I've only seen it done on certain aircraft.

Sparrowhyperion

Witnesses said they saw flames from the engines and the top wing before it crashed.  It was also reported that they were seen dumping the fuel outside of inhabited areas to minimize the crash and explosion.  They also were able to jig the Hornet enough to miss a school.  To do that, they had to rise in with the bird for as long as possible and barely had time to eject.  Those crew members should get a huge medal for that one.  They saved a LOT of lives.  The turkey feathers look almost as if the birds final stage compression chamber was breached on the port engine.

Well the MIG is under way.  I have some images but I'm too tired to UL them at the moment.  I have the seat painted and the cockpit assembled and painted.  I also had time to get some of the interior light gray areas (landing gear bays etc. painted.  I plan on starting assembly of the forward section in a couple of hours to let the paint finish setting up.  Sometimes I wonder what they are thinking when they design these kits.  Pieces broken into smaller bits just to make it more complicated than it has to be it seems.  With all the fuselage joins, I am going to spend a week just filling and sanding.

I wonder why the turkey feathers are so different, crash trauma, or is that part of the catastrophe?

Yeah Rich, that starboard engine is sliding outa' the fuselage, something weird there for sure.

Yeah, in the 50's, they had a talent for making super complex aircraft very simple, and why I love the old Monogram and Revell kits with a passion. Today, they give you individual fingernails for the pilot in 1/48.....LOL....and screws for the pilots watches......

OK - gonna bore you with some more pics.

Oops, looks like we had a big wreck here!  Not really.  Ken, beware of what it says in the instructions - don't cut the fuselage where it states.  At least, that was the case with my instructions.  The main resin piece is cast to show where to cut out for the leading edge of the wing.  Use that as your reference for where to make the cut on the F-102 fuselage.

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t65/kbuzz_photos/TF-102/DSC01790copy.jpg?t=1333324571

Here's the old and the new:

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t65/kbuzz_photos/TF-102/DSC01820copy.jpg?t=1333083086

After I did a lot of fitting (cutting, filing, sanding, etc.) to fit with the resin piece, I glued the upper and lower wing sections and the fuselage halves together.  I used liquid glue with a touch'n'flow.  My first time with that thing, but seems to work.

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t65/kbuzz_photos/TF-102/DSC01853copy.jpg?t=1333324600

Then filled the remaining gaps which were actually quite small (a pleasant surprise) with multiple applications of Tamiya liquid surface primer.

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t65/kbuzz_photos/TF-102/DSC01861copy.jpg?t=1333324615

A lot of effort and I haven't even got to the hard part yet!  Tongue Tied

Buzz

KenBuzz....if your pics are boring, there's no hope for me man, the guys must look at my posts to help themselves fall asleep....LOL.....Wink

Yeah, I'ld rather be bored by your pics than mine for sure.......Big Smile

Please keep posting those pics........!Geeked

Cliff - the A20 is looking good!  Nifty looking quilt it's parked on,too.  (My wife is into quilting.)

Bocks - the resin piece is nicely symmetrical, so must be the visual angle.  The slightly engraved panel markings on it are almost non-existent tho.  Not sure what I'm gonna do with panel lines, since the remaining F-102 parts have raised lines.  Haven't decided if I'm into removing and rescribing yet.
