Russ;

That makes perfect sense, In my infallible opinion, I highly recommend you continue as planned.....lolBig Smile

..... i have no idea what colour the earth was around that AFB.

I'm not sure I remember either, bud. Okinawa is an island, albeit a volcanic one. However, Kadena is right on the ocean and most of the land therebouts is sandy, so I'll go with a sandy color for the general weathering scheme.

Bockscar

Hey where are you getting the 1/72 troops from?

Dom

Well, over the years I've accumulated 3 US Pliot/Ground Crew sets, 2 US Aerospace Ground Equipment sets and 5 US Aircraft Weapon Loading sets, all Hasegawa kits, so I have plenty of troops and ground equipment Smile

Hehe, no - where can I get some? Big Smile. I had an Okinawan sunburn, but it was mostly from the beach. Most of the shops were fortunate in that we didn't have to be out in the sun for long periods. Mostly it was the munitions guys, ground power and crew chiefs that had the deep tans.

]Russ:

if I may make a tiny suggestion, Smile,

I'm not sure how far you want to go with the realism, but the tires, the rolling surfaces could use some flat or dust to separate them from the sidewalls a bit when you go the weather the beast.

Dom

Dom,

You may make any suggestion you think fit, my friend, and I certainly appreciate that one. I'm not that experienced in weathering so I'm studying up on it, but want to be sure it's consistant for the whole diorama. I plan to wait until I have all of the vehicles and support equipment built and the diorama base finished, and then do the weathering in one fell swoop. That way I can compare them against each other and against the plane. Does that make sense, or do you recommend another approach?

Kripes' a' Mighty, the paragon kit hit $257......

Wow, $257.50 for a conversion kit!  Of course like I said, it is the first time I have seen it listed in two years, so that shows how rare it is.  The auction ends tonight at 3:00 AM so it will be interesting to see where it finally ends up at!

Two-hundred and fifty-seven dollars and fifty cents!?!

Wow, and I thought Manny's $229.00 kit was overpriced!

Good luck on finding another kit, hopefully cheaper!

Well, I didn't win the lottery so no chance of getting this one!  If it goes for more than the $257.50 I will be surprised.  Of course I can't believe it got that high!  Shows that someone should be seriously thinking about making another conversion kit that knows how to do that sort of thing!

I just found an old listing for this kit on "Great Models Webstore" (a now defunct website).  This kit ceased being sold retail back in 2001 and sold for $149.  So I guess the $257.50 price tag is not too unreasonable since it has been out of production for 11 years and had a high dollar orignal price tag.  It is a big conversion kit since it is 1/48 scale.

Unbelievable!  The current price on eBay for that kit is now $306.66!!!   Surprise  Way out my current price range!

Man, the way they have the bidders identity protected you can't tell for sure if it it just two or more that are bidding against each other to drive it up so high.  But I would say the way it is going, it may well reach $450.  Either somebody has deep pockets or a credit card to burn!

I'm sorry, but paying that much for what boils down to about $5 worth of resin is just idiotic..  And people say this hobby isn't getting too expensive....

Honestly.  Id be more apt to make my own than buy it for that price.  I haven't done resin for years, but that doesn't mean I forgot how. lol

Seriously.  That thing costs half a months income for me.  There's simply no justification the seller can give that would make that sound like a good price.

Mikey;

I play a flat land game, the recent progeny of Pac Man

and it takes about 30 hours to perfectly build the set pieces in place

for the next rounds of attack.

The power always goes off in the neighborhood

when I get about 35 hours in at level 100-110.

It chews the quad-core until it crawls and sometimes freezes.

I'ld tell you the game, but the guys here would

laff me outa' town.Embarrassed

I played my last game......almost 40 hours in,

completely controlled the board, and lightening

killed my empire once again......

I am deposed, banished, never to return to fight

the evil invaders......Crying

Now wait a minute Rich, that's like saying that paying $20,000.00 on a car that is made of $500.00 worth of metal is idiotic.  It's not what the material the object is made of that you are paying for.  You are paying for someone's time to do the research, the time to create the original to make the molds from (which in itself I am sure has to be done many many times before it comes out right), then you are finally ready to make a product.  Then you have to package it, create the instructions on how to install it, and the time to negotiate with each retailer to sell your product.

Don't worry SM, we won't hold it against ya. lol  I'm more into RPGs like the Final Fantasy series.  I still have my old PS1 and PS2 in addition to my PS3 and I run Atari game via a PC emulator sometimes.  I love old games.  They seem to have more depth and originality than the recent mass of SOSEA (Seen One, Seen eh' All)  shooters and platformers they have now.  Although the clips and trailers I have seen for FFXIII look really good.  Some of the FF series I don't play since I don't like MMORPGs that much.

EEEGAADDSSS!!!

Someone out there is a member of the MMTB Club (More Money Than Brains)...  $525 for a conversion kit!!!  Plus figure in another 50 for the base kit they will need to use it on...  I think Donald Trump must like modeling or something.  Sorry, but someone paying that much indicates that his or her hobby has become an obsession...    Heck, I don't even think of AM items unless they are under $15 including shipping max...   I'm thinking I ought to get into doing resin kits...  Apparently there is a lot of money in it.

Yeh but a car requires years of design and testing.  And with a car, you have numerous employees working with multi-million dollar machines, that need to be paid for.  Yes some research is needed.  but not that much.  Figure this manufacturer made even 1000 of these,  if they are all going for this price, that's $525,000.  Even saying it only averaged for $100, that's still 100,000.  Assuming it's the manufacturer that's selling it, Quite a profit.  Once the first production run is done, I am guessing the expenses are made up for.  So further runs would be almost pure profit.  I  have worked with resin occasionally.  Not for model add-ons, but for other things.  Mostly props for people going to Sci-Fi conventions back in the 70's and 80's.  Stuff like the DS Gun from Logan's RUn.  The Blaster from the original Battlestar Galactica, the CommLock and Laser from Space 1999.  Things like that.  And believe me, accuracy was needed there too.  But the pricing on this item was just crazy.  Some kits are just as bad.  Again, some of these kit's have been being produced for 30-40 years or more.  They have long since paid their initial expense, so now you have only production and shipping costs to deal with.  But they still sell for a large amount of cash.  This I think, is why so many people have stopped modeling.  There are still a lot of us, but a lot of folks can't really afford it.  I'm on that borderline phase.  Between kits and supplies, it's starting to get too much.  I mean with shipping, you are going to pay at least $10 on eBay for Testors MM Black Bottle glue.  HobbyTown in our city is about $12.  For glue.....  Paint Jars that once cost $0.50 to $1.00 are not up around $6-$7.  At that rate, it's no wonder why sales at hobby stores are slow.  Especially in this economy.  I tell ya.  I wish I could sell something for $525 right now.

Rich

I wonder what I could get for my C57D kit... hmmm...
