Yeh, I won't know how well they actually came out until I get all of the painting done and take off the masking.  I have some extra thin clear plastic here.  So if the Krystal Clear doesn't work, I'll give the other method a try.

Lots of progress.  Engine nacelles, main aircraft and weapons pod have all had their silver and red done.  It took me just over an hour to mask everything for the red.  My hands kept getting shaky while I was trying to position tape on the engine nacelles.  I have images...

Silver sprayed and dried.  I had to ELO two of the engine pods and reshoot them.  Some bubbling.  They came out good the second shot though.

The two I had to reshoot the silver on.  They came out well this time.

The weapons pod after it's first coat of silver.

Everything masked.  You will notice the forward end of the engine nacelles have not been taped.  It was easier to use Micro-Mask gel on that area.  I found that the guide lines for that artistic curving shape at the end was too faint to see under tape, so I just painted Micro Mask where needed.

The engine nacelles drying after the Micro Mask was applied.  Yes I cleaned off that drip of micro mask.

I know it's hard to see but these are the nacelles after spraying the red on.  And the weapons pod is in this one as well.  The red is actually fairly dark, but the flash makes it look very light.

And lastly the B58 with all of the red on it.

Now all I have to do is further mask and do the black areas in front, and the white dart on the wings and tail.  Then it's off to see how tough my decals are. lol

Hi, Rich,

I have the same problem with the two windows I cut out above the cockpit on my B-52D. I have a sheet of 0.27 mm clear plastic that I'm going to use for these windows. Maybe something like that would solve your problem if the Krystal Clear doesn't work.

Cheers,

Russ

Russ: Ahh, ok I see it now, I don't normally look back up at the top. Propeller

Guess my first modeling memories were buying kits at K-Mart and Ben Franklin's (old I think extinct five-and dime). I was always a big fan of Monogram. I built kits by Lindberg, Airfix, Revell, MPC and a few others but Monogram was my big favorite brand.

My first 'high-quality modern' kit was an Italeri Panzer IV. I was amazed at how many parts the thing had and the detail. It set me off on buying a whole line of 1/35 armour kits from them and Tamiya. I'm not sure what was my first Hasegawa and Tamiya aircraft though. I remember going from the department stores to ordering stuff from Squadron. You filled out the form in the back, mailed it and waited about two and half to three weeks for your order. Gosh I love the internet shops today!

Russ: Sorry it took a bit to get back to you but I've been running around all weekend. I'm not sure about an option to preview posts since I normally just post it, and then go back and edit any mistakes. I'm sure there's an option around somewhere though.

Mike: Congrads on the Bugatti, beautiful plane and the reviews I saw of it seem like a really nice kit.

No problem, Gam. I found out how to do it - when you use the "Use Rich Formatting" option for a reply, there's a tab at the top that lets you preview your post.

Okay.  Now one of the most annoying things about this kit is that Aurora didn't include glass for the side windows.  I guess they wanted the pilots to catch a breeze or something.  Although they DID include the cockpit windshield.  Kind of dumb I know, but this was 1969.  So being creative and having had this issue before, I just smudged in a whole ton of MicroScale Krystal Clear on the inside of the fuselage half to form a window.  When it dries it should look really nice.  Some future will finish it off and make it very durable for masking before final paint.

I agree with you there.  I always thought that was redicules.  But then the answer is always, "its all about the money".

Yes, I have a DVR and a nice feature is the available settings to record with.  I very rarely watch anything live anymore.  I set it up to only record "new" episodes of my favorite series.  Then I can fast forward through the commercials.  I hate wasting my time watching the same old commercials over and over again during my favorite shows.

Cable networks are terrible for it. I flicked on discovery the other day and saw one of the first episodes of mythbusters. Followed by an episode of dirty jobs that id seen about 4 times.

Hi Mikey,

I am sure you will win with the experience you have under your belt.  By the way, do you get the "Military Channel" there?  They have a series called "Great Planes" and they just did a spot on the AH-64 Apache.

Hey All,

Now that I've gotten some sleep, I'm ready to move on Yeah Here is my APS-104 nav radar antenna that will go into the chin. Since the plane will be part of a diorama, the chin radome will be shown removed while the radar is being worked on. Unfortunately, I only found one picture of the antenna and that from the back. I had to guess at the feedhorn assembly.

Cheers Russ. This is the first time ive had to use my Revell cement in a long time. Normally i use Tamiya extra thin. But this kit i needed to use the needle nose bottle because it kept popping.

Couple quick photos i took on the way out the door this morning.

Theres nothing inside this thing. Ive done the cockpit, welded the seams and put the core tail rotor assembly in (needs to go in first) Took me the whole damn weekend. This kit is a nightmare.

Hi Russ,

No problem, I updated page 1.  I assumed that it is a Monogram 1/72 B-52D?

Scorpiomikey

When i was a kid, dad could do anything when he was around (more often at work than at home) that was right up until the divorce.

God those kits are terrible.

The earliest manufacturer kit that i can remember (about my 3rd or 4th kit by this stage) was a revell Mi-24 Hind D Tigermeet kit. Didnt paint it since the plastic was already white. As a result the decals blistered and flaked off pretty quick. Also got my first modeling injury on that kit. Sent the craft knife through the pad of my thumb.

Speaking of revell and monogram. Ive got (Thanks to CallsignOWL) a 1:48 AH-64 Apache. Am i able to enter this? I want to get it finished before my Bugatti 100 arrives. (So 2 weeks, eek, hope i get there)

Hi Mikey,

Sorry for waiting so long to reply to your question.  Yes, you can enter the Apache.  I will update page 1 now.  I have been caught up with my Mom's brother who is close to the edge with cancer.  I took my Mom to see him yesterday (it is a three hour drive one way) so it took up the entire day.

Thanks man. I dont really like to remember those days much. But your right, when all else goes to hell, the plastic stays true.

Yeah Mikey;

Again, you summed up the reality of life.

I just hate recounting or retracing the steps to the parlor,

but then a guy like you, regular guy,

says it all over again. So that's just how it is.

The scars tell the story of our lives.

I love the Century 100 aircraft, because they

tell the story of our scars in a big way.

There was a reason why those aircraft were built.

I still believe in that reason. I will gladly bear the scars.

Besides, I worked real hard to earn the silver to

buy all those kits, and I liked the process so much

I still re-trace the steps, gladly, today.

I don't think I lived a day after getting my Aurora

F9F Panther, that I didn't want the next kit.

Until 10 years ago, I didn't know so many people were

still into the hobby......we all have similar stories,

especially the stories about how the kits anchored us,

they really did keep us sane, the kits needed us as

much as we needed them...it is a culture.

Mikey:

Those were the magic words

"get me through the divorce"

styrene kits got me through lots of stuff....

as is the same for the guys here......all the crap in the world was flying,

but the kit always was like an anchor of reality, and sanity, for us.

Says it all.

Thanks for that Mikey

Hmm, first kits. Dad always had his hobby room off the basement playroom. After showing interest dad took me to the local warehouse (Our equivalent of walmart) and we got a snap together F-15.

Shortly after that mum and dad got divorced so my memory is a little hazy (I got really sick and ended up in hospital)

The next kit i remember was a Dassault Mirage, molded in silver. Im guessing it was a 48 scale kit. No idea who made it. But i remember the pilot was holding his gut and had bullet holes in him.

I didnt paint it, but it hung from my bedroom ceiling for years.

The next kit i built was the USS John C Stenis. I painted the hull bright red. I had a thing for red when i was a kid. I remember painting the deck crane bright orange and then driving it along nan and pops fence. It caught and flipped into the neighbours flax bush. Never saw it again. I would have been 9. Nan and pop bought it for me to try and get me through the divorce. That was a visit that i managed to pinch all of dads modeling gear, there were about 100 pots of humbrol enamel. Glues, files, sanding sticks. After that it was the usual airfix spitfires and stuff. I took a break about 6 years ago when i met my current partner. Took it up again about 3  or 4 years ago when we moved back to CHCH. You guys have pretty much seen everything ive built since then.
