Oh boy my book came today;  "Bury Us Upside Down". I read a couple of chapters at lunch time.

Wow, very emotional stuff. Sen. McCain wrote the forward and was in the next cell to one of these characters, the Misty pilots.

I'm really really stoked to build my TF-100 when it comes. Hannants has announced that it has shipped, so it can't be long. Box and sprue shots when it arrives.

tcepilot, you need a handle. Also i suggest you put out an order that sprue pic's are a first requirement.

Stikker, do you have any recco's for good books on the Hun, like Squadron's or others?

PS Thank you for the PM. Very nice thoughts.

Bondo, I know the recent re issue of the Squadron F-100 in action looks good, as does Osprey's F-100 Super Sabre Units of the Vietnam War.  Then there was a novel that I read a few years back written by a former Hun Driver, Mark Berent called Rolling Thunder. I could not put the book down. It had a vibe so real that put you there in 1966 when the story takes place.

...but I'm thinking about getting another 1/48 Revell F-106 if I can find it...

Which brings up a question. I do not think the -106 was ever in theater (correct me if I'm wrong), and is your GB limited to the SEA theater, or the era?

I think it's wise at this point to limit it to aircraft. To follow Stik out the door, oops he's the pusher; a successful GB is all about the host. The good ones are always present, and offer comments such as thanking people for posting, keeping the roster current, and generally doing housekeeping.

Daywalker, HvH, Stikko and Bish are some of the best I've served under.

no I don't beleive the 106 was in theatre but it's just a kit I enjoyed. And it is limited to aircraft only of the Era not just the sea. And I will be on top of everything, you can count on it!

Thanks, clears that up and yes the six is a really hot ride.

Stik, in 1966 I was sitting in my 4th grade classroom eating my baloney sandwich. I drew a/c like a maniac though, in the margins of my note books. I got in trouble in art for doing a full color side view of some generic fighter bomber. might have been a Hun.

So I took it home and Mom was upset that I had a slogan on the bomb, although I don't remember what.

Dad thought it was pretty cool.

You all understand that we got a LOT more war information back then. Life Magazine, Look, Time, Newsweek. It was all there, blood and guts and all.

Nightly news too.

tcepilot - Good group build subject.  Gotta like it.  Also, I gotta get in with a 1:72 AM F-4J in VF-142, a/c # 214 (Mig killer) markings.  Please accept this application.  Thanks!

It'll be the first jet of my modern model building era.

Smile

P.S., I probably won't get started until early autumn sometime - I have a few other gb's to make good on first.  But I will get it done Wink.

Flight deck:  Hasegawa 1:48 P-40E; Tamiya 1:48 A6M2 N Type 2 ('Rufe')

Elevators:  Airfix 1:72 Grumman Duck; AM 1:72 F-4J

I just want to ask anybody. What air group was in the Philippines during the 'Nam war? I see some F4's taking off and landing at Clark during the war.

3rd Tactical Fighter Wing flew F-4s there. And most units that deployed from the US to South East Asia, passed thru Clark on their way to their destination.

Why brown for the seat harness? Those straps are made of nylon, not leather. They should be a Sage Green (a grayish green with a hint of blue) or Khaki Olive, or something along those lines. OD for the seat chushions is good. Here are a few pics...

Pilot, what do you mean by newer version of kit? I wasn't aware there was a new monogram f-4c. I assume it still has the raised detail (panel lines etc).

Just a guess, but I presume that he means the latest re issue of that kit. Looking on Revells website and the download of the instructions the only changes since the original release are that it now includes a set of AIM-9L/M Sidewinders from an earlier re issue of the kit. That variant of the Sidewinder was not used in Vietnam and did not make its combat debut until a decade later in the Falklands and over the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. Air Force Phantoms in Vietnam carried the AIM-9B early on, later the AIM-9E, and finally the AIM-9J made its debut at the end of the Linbacker campaigns in 1972.

A SWAG says yes on the U-2C. Looking at my copy of Vietnam Air War Debrief, the U-2 flew sorties over the combat theater from 1963 until "well after the end of hostilities".

Troublemaker, ya gotta love the F-8. Even sitting on the deck with its wings folded it looks fast and mean.

Are you a Phantom Phan Professor? Wink

As far as I know teh kit has been issued 5 times by Monogram, Revell/Monogram:

The original issue with markings for Stever Ritchie, Robin Olds, and and a USAFE out of Spangdahlem

the "Call to Glory" issue associated with that TV series

The ADC issue

The High Tech issue that included a small Photo Etch fret to dress it up and the later AIM-9L/Ms

and the latest re issue

And Revell Germany has issued the kit as well

I remember the first model I ever attempted to build. It was one of my dads kits from when he was younger. I remember it sitting in the top of a closet and my grandparets house and I couldn't reach it. I spent days contemplating how much trouble I'd be in for pulling it down and going to town on it. Well, I finally grabbed a chair and promptly turned it into a glue blob. It was a F-106.

So, long story short let me know if that's an acceptable kit...I believe you did say "era." I was thinking of grabbing one at hobby lobby. Just to revisit some memories.

Yes the 106 is fine, just don't get too far off topic :)
