This gb thread is growing by several pages a day!

I finally made an Amazon run - ordered Bury Us Upside Down, One Day in a Long War, and Navy F-4 Phantom Mig Killers 1965 to 1970 (I already have the 1971-72 volume of the same work).  Just gonna do some parallel reading for the old gb here.  I also ordered a dvd titled No Easy Days featuring about 90 minutes of flight deck mishaps and misadventures from WWII to the current conflicts in the middle east.  There are some Vietnam bits, I believe, so that counts, too Wink.

Flight deck:  Hasegawa 1:48 P-40E; Tamiya 1:48 A6M2 N Type 2 ('Rufe')

Elevators:  Airfix 1:72 Grumman Duck; AM 1:72 F-4J

professordeath

I think this is one of my most satisfying builds ever because I'm learning that I can actually deal with these issues. I think it's going to be a good looking plane when done. It's true that the old RoG kits can be polished up nicely. Doesn't change the fact that they are ancient and outdated. :P

I'll give you old... but never outdated Wink I'll tell you an easy trick for the gap like that between the wing base front end and the fuselage ... strip syrene shims of the appropriate thickness attached to the front of the wing, sanded to match the contour, before the two major parts are joined and boom, all you have left is a minor seam rather than a gap needing whatever filler you prefer.

I did that here on the rear of my Hun's tail base

and on the leading edge of the wing on a Crusader that I built a few years ago...

I'd put a pic up, but Photobucket is being quite un co operative right now... I am wasting too much time on that siteSuper Angry

Yes, after my marathon session the day before yesterday, I had to step away from the Hun so I don't burn out so close to the finish line. Last night and this morning I did a bit of work on another project that was long overdue. But this evening my Hun will be back up front.

Did every USAF F-4C have the red band around them and also did they have the antenna?

What red band? What antenna? The "towel rack" antenna?

only curtain units used the red band. each unit had their own specific markings for their birds.

Yep that antenna, and the red stripe on the aft. fuselage where the USAF emblem goes.

This stripe behind the national insignia?

That is a turbine warning stripe. It does not seem to be too common on SEA camo F-4s and you will have to research photos of individual aircraft ( OY 463 or Scat XXVII) to be sure if it is there or not.

The "towel rack" antenna was a LORAN (LOng Range Aircraft Navigation) and was fitted only to selected F-4s. Most did not carry this.

A few, like in that  pic above that I posted. I want to say that it was during the later portion of the war.

Yes I finished applying the stencils tonite. But half of the pics that I took were out of focus. The camera focused on the wrong areas, rather than the stenciled areas. But a few pics did come out good.

and a  better shot of the nose art

I still have to paint a couple more items than I can start the weathering and final assembly and finishing...

Nice work Stik, she's beautiful. I almost didn't notice the plane.

One question, did you use Tamiya acrylics or enamels ?

Cheers

Tony

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

I used Tamiya acrylics. I have never seen their enamels here in California
