Canadian GB

my HUSKY arv came in today. after i get caught up will build it but lessen the weathering to show the camo. need one more canadian wheel for  a set (have COUGAR, GRIZZLY, LAV-III done) and now this.

So I started on the markings for the Whirlwind.....OMG!!  The Canadian/British way of marking Corps, divisions & regiments could drive a guy insane!   So I decided on the The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regt) of Canada....oi vey! I now have the formation and units signs applied.  Next up are the squadron/troop markings.

I need to lay down now.....

I posted my Lab build in the Helicopters forum if anyone's interested.  I started to late for this, but now I can start on my Cougar.

I realize I'd not posted in a bit.  It's been a busy few weeks, sick dogs, broken computer, getting the lawnmower up and running, but finally had a bit of quality time on the spit.

I managed to get the engine to a point where I'm happy

and my fuselage halves joined with the radio bay and the cockpit sandwiched in between, though I'm not entirely happy (the seat seems slightly too far forward for my liking, but that's just how it went together, and there wasn't a lot I could really do about it)

And finally got to butchering up the wings to take the gun bay inserts (a lot of thinning, gouging, dry fits, more thinning) and I'm close to getting the ailerons mounted up.

I've also decided she needs an ammo belt for the Hispano, so I've started working on little stubs of copper wire in a tape 'belt' that I'll have to paint up and insert at the end.  I was very disappointed to find the CMK gun bay kit is only supplied for one wing, and the port wing only (their moulds won't fit the starboard wing Hispano).  Oh well, a little less thinning and gouging and stress, I guess.

Everyone else here looks like they're doing well (hats off to Wayne for already finishing, wow, I feel so far behind).  I'm hoping to have most of the construction done before I have to go to work on Sunday, but I'll see how much time I can spend at it and how far I get.

Nice looking engine, Andrew.  The rest of it looks like it's progressing well, too.

hey Wayne for warwheels have you considered a Bison 8x8. I worked with them when I served with a communications regiment out of Toronto. Also the little Iltis jeep. They weren't much to look at but they were a hoot to drive.

 Andrew- that Spit is coming along real nice. Like the engine detail and the cockpit. Good job.

don't see sny pics. anyone make a 1/35. i could do with another LAV-III type vehicle as my UN one is showing it's age. what other modern canadian stuff is out there. i have a COUGAR, GRIZZLY, HUSKY, and LAV-III. really don't want to do late model ones since i have 30+ warwheels including tank transporters in the stash.

I know Italeri did a bisson kit. Also I'm not sure if they went through with it but I know that Canada was looking at purchasing strikers. Again don't know if they did or not.

Nope - never got the strykers.  Though I thought those were just LAV chassis so likely LAV wheels.

Funny thing about the strykers, when I took my Sgt's course we had lectures on Stryker formations and task force compositions etc etc.  of course the project/procurement was cancelled earlier in the year but our course officer just carried on like these things were already in the regimental lines.  So I finally asked the question that everyone else was wondering "why are we learning this when we don't even own these things".

the poor Lt didn't know what to say. I guess he was hoping no one would notice that small detail....

I'm seeing these kits shaping up and am being tempted to start my Sabres earlier than planned;)

Cougar lower hull is done.  I was tempted to not use the prop guards, but then decided that I wanted it to match my Grizzly.  I've modified the top hull; trimmed down the lip around the grills, and filled in the holes for the jerry cans (don't like them, and many of the picture references I've seen don't have them, anyway).

Colin: looks good, so far.  Is this the Trumpeter kit?  If so, is it the early or improved version?  

I picked up the early version from Squadron - they're having a 30% off online sale! Any problems with the kit?

i just ordered the late model COUGAR (and a JGSDF TYPE 96A and a JGSDF 4X4 LAV). already have the HUSKY and just finished a GRIZZLY and TYPE 96B. i don't recall any real issues with the COUGAR i built a while back and the GRIZZLY was fine except half the turret instructiions were missing.

There are a few accuracy issues with the Trumpeter AVGPs, but it was guys who worked on or with them for years who noticed.  Here's a link to the Cougar tweak list.

The kits go together very well, I think.  The only frustration I've found is the rear parts for the prop guards.

Alright folks, think I've officially started here now. Running most of the night last night, a little pre-holiday-weekend-cleanup at the house. Tired eyes. Didn't want to do anything that required much effort, and the Sukhoi needs some TLC on the wing root joins. So... I get rummaging thru some of the kits I've pulled out of the stash for the near future & open up this. (Rivet-counters be warned...)



Please note, this is Hasegawa kit number... 0010! But, my brother had picked this one up for me for a birthday years ago. So it'll be built mostly out of the box. First thing I noticed when the box was opened was... apparently I glued the fuselage halves together, ??? years ago?? I mean, there really is no interior to speak of, seated pilot on a lumpy ejection seat & a decal for the instrument panel.. but no instrument panel!!



I'll be boxing in the cockpit walls & adding some sort of IP, leaving it at that & closing up the canopy.

It actually has the option of open speed brakes... but no details. Trying to decide if I should deploy them or not. Seriously thinking about posing this one in-flight, as the landing gear is meant to be attached directly to the undersurface & hidden with the doors. ZERO landing gear bay. And considering the fuselage is already closed up...

The gun bay panels sit a little proud. Fermis would probably remove them, manufacture 1/72 scale rivets out of Arizona Tea Tin... That folks would be putting a dress on a pig, speed-build is the order of the day on this one.

Wings assembled, fuselage split & re-glued at the nose to get rid of a tiny gap, wings attached, cockpit boxing started. Looks like a Sabre to me.

Not as small as I was expecting, compared to my Soviet mud-mover.

Well finally got some time to work on my little CF-5 and got the 3 tone camouflage done. Will post pics as soon as I can get phototbucket to upload them.

Hey guys, I had put my builds on hold while I moved to Salmon arm. Anyways I'm here now and this seems like a good place to ask this question. Does anybody out there know any good hobby shops in the Salmon arm, Kamloops, Vernon area?

masking with poster-tack & tape. The first few "worms" took a little work to get loosened up, NEEDED the tape to hold them in place. The final 1/2 of them... sticky in my hands immediately. I crossed my fingers & kept on going.


Unfortunately there was some of the poster-tack left behind, BUT no paint was pulled up.




Went back over the residue spots with fresh masking tape & pulled at the stuff until it came off, disaster averted. A check for touchups tonight, drawing in any lost panel lines, and a Future coat this evening. Spot painted the nose and tail panels (IFF or RWR equipment I assume?)



Annnd - not that I'll be tackling it immediately, but a preview of the Heller kit. Opening canopy, better cockpit interior, something to work with and see if I can scratch some details for it.




No plans on using them, but the good folks at Heller gave me two decal sheets? A little thick, but they look use-able.

Nice work on the camouflage.  Came out very well!

Sorry I've been a little MIA lately.

But the builds are coming along great.

Except the Arrow, I'm sad to say its still white, and that's it.  Once I get caught up in the forum then I hope to do a bit over the next couple days I finally have off.
