I had no idea mask sets with inside masks existed. I'd sure like to try that in 1/32 sometime. In 1/48, I would not! :)

Neat thing about masking inside and out, one can prime inside and out. Me, I'll probably never use MM for a canopy again as I also had severe peeling issues the one time I tried it.

Greg, I believe those inside masks are pretty new to the market. I only became aware of montex early last year and the list of products is growing. I don't think I will be replacing my current stash of masks, but will defiantly consider them for any new sets I need, especially in 32nd. In 72nd they only seem to do them for the outside. Not sure why, maybe they think 72nd builders don't have open canopy's.

I like using the Montex masks. I think I wouldn't have had the peeling problem if I were using enamels instead of the acrylics but I'm done with the touch up painting on the canopies and they'e looking pretty good. Next major task is to paint the undersides  of this bird. I may be stuck using RLM 76 since I can't find the RLM 65 anywhere. Seems the online shops are out of it as is my local Hobbytown USA.

Speaking of masks, here's my puzzle of a mask. Money well spent on a set of Eduard masks.

Now need to attach all that glass and the Stuka will be ready for paint.

I'm sold on using masks for the more complex canopy frames like the Stuka. Guess I will need to get a set for the 32nd He111 while they're still available. I will have to try painting them attached to the model next time, due to the size of the Airfix canopies, I sprayed them individually.

I did get the rear gunner machine gun painted and installed yesterday. Also applied liquid mask to mask off the white portion of the prop spinner stripe, letting that dry then paint the forward portion of the spinner black. I tried taping it but was unable to get it just right. If the liquid mask don't work out, I have some spinner stripes leftover from the 190 decal sheet that might do the trick too.

I am with you there Shooter. I now try and get masks for any complex canopy what ever the scale. I still need to get the masks for my He 111 as well, as long as the rest of the AM.

Ditto, that's one of the major drawbacks with some of the old Revellogram kits, the AM guys are not big on masks for many of the kits (including the Ju-87D).  I suspect they figure most of us builders (or the kits) aren't worthy of a mask.

Great looking scheme which looks like the snake one from St.G2? I'm doing the same scheme but in 1/48.

Greg...this one is the Airfix 1/24th Stuka hence the heavy paint consumption.

Oh my, don't know how I'd forgotten this was 1/24th Airfix. And I've  been following this one of yours quite closely. I love getting older.

That certainly explains consumption even more.

LOL thanks. Don't feel bad Greg. I kept looking at the canopy and the masking set for two evenings before I finally took the jump.

Having never used masks before, I was starring at my Montex mask set for weeks before taking the leap but I did find that it was easier than trying to paint it by hand or taping off the frames. Though I did wind up with a couple of unused mask portions on the sheet and no clue as to where they were suppose to go to??

Great looking Stukas being produced.  All very impressive!

I've been working on Plan B Stuka since the mishap with the first one.  This is the 1/72 Airfix offering.  As you can tell by the 70th Anniversary Battle of Britain sticker, it's been around for a while.

There were a number of ejector pin marks inside the fuselage, which I removed with some tedious sanding.

Then I used a protractor to glue the horizontal tale surfaces in position from the inside.  It makes for a stronger bond I think--but I still managed to knock the port side stabilizer loose later on.  Fortunately it was reparable, but I was worried that I might be destroying more Stukas than the RAF did.

The cockpit pieces are kind of clunky and bland.

Here they are painted, installed and the fuselage closed up.

That's all for now; Photobucket is acting up a little.  I have progressed to the painting stage, but I'll have to post those pictures later.  Better not to bore you all anyway!

once assembled, there is an astonishingly huge trench left all along the wing length.  I'm not sure how I'd fill it and sand it without also destroying all the fine rivets Airfix  affixed to the wings; so I'm just going to leave it, and see if a wash will make it look like it ought to be there, even though we know it isn't.

Things assembled.  The prop is supposed to be installed, then the engine cover put into place.  Of course, after this photo, while masking, I managed to knock the prop off--so I have to do a little surgery and implanting to put it back from the outside.

And camouflage painting finished!

I used MM's RLM 65, 70 and 71.  My, there's a lot of rivets in the wings!

It's a relief to get things this far!

Great progress CMate. The paint looks great. I got tired of PB and dumped it for many reasons, mainly suspecting it of loading tons of malware into my PC.

CMK, oh no, you're going to finish your recovery build before mine, which I've been working on for, uh, about a year? How embarrassing. (cough cough, ahem)

I really like your idea of using a protractor on the fuselage halves before joining to square the horizontal stabilizers!

Good looking paint job there CMate. Ahhh those Airfix kits, love them or leave them. One of the issues I've always had with their 1/48 kits at least some of the earlier kits, were the decals not settling down and curling up. Airfix customer service was excellent and were always quick to send out a replacement set but sometimes even those would still not lay down.

Following the builds of other modelers here I have noticed that the paint scheme pattern is pretty much the same for all the Stuka's wearing the RLM 70 and 71 colors. Mine is identical with the exception of the sand yellow painted over the other colors.    This evening I was doing some more paint touch up with the RLM 70 and put a first coat on the bombs.  Drilled out a hole in the bottom of the antenna mask so to later run a wire from the mask to the radios.   Having issues with painting the white stripe on the spinner so I may opt with using a decal for that. Almost ready to spray on the Future. Now getting anxious to start slapping on decals.

There is one thing Stuka's don't have and that's a huge variety of schemes.
