2015 Messerschmitt Bf 109 Group Build

Doug, nope, you have not misunderstood. That is indeed the bit I was reoffering it. I know I painted it yellow on my 72nd G-6, hasegawa just decided to make me doubt myself I think.

Clemens, I am pretty sure its yellow as well. Just nice to get some confirmation. And thanks, will have some pics later. I am enjoying this, though once again I have tried lawdogs cockpit painting method and once again I failed.

JCon, great looking 109 there. Nice work on the scheme. Did this kit not come with the Swastika's for the tail.

Ok, time for my first update. But before I post the pics, I would like to make a couple of observations I have made from the perspective of making such a large jump in scale. Hopefully this may help other who are considering a change in scale, even if like me its not a permanent switch.

The first thing I have noticed is that this kit is bigger than what I am used to.

My second observation is that this thing is bloody HUUUUUUUGE.

Now never let it be said I do not pass on useful information for my fellow modellers.

First thing I have been working on, I am sure you will not be surprised to hear, is the pit. After removing the moulded on detail, the PE and plastic parts were attached.

Next up, a coat of Alclad black primer followed by Xtracolour RLM 66. As I mentioned before, the pre shading didn't work for me again, so i'll have to rely on washes to create the shadows.

This was followed with a dry brush mixing the enamels with white oil.

As I have used oils, I will leave it until tomorrow night before painting in some details, adding the pre coloured PE and doing the washes. In the mean time I have made a start on the wings.

All comments and suggestions are extremely welcome. I am mainly trying to think of things I might have to do differently in this scale than I would in 72nd.

Mike, Yes it is a Hobbycraft D.  I used the H model decals from Czech.  I like them.  They seam nice and thin.  I just used the setting solution around the panel lines.  Very little carrier film around the decals as well.

When I try to black preshade, I just end up painting solid over it. My airbrush patience needs major work.

Bish thanks for the kind words,your office looks very good sir! As to the swastika I have them but wasn't sure if they were on this plane of his, some of his planes had them and some didn't... would be easy to add them if I knew for sure!

Greg, ye, that's the same for me. And its not like I lay on a heavy coat, after the first pass it just seems to have covered it. I think I will just stick to post shading.

JCon, that's an interesting one, I have never come across German aircraft without the swastika before.

Joe: That's a beautiful 109 you've finished there. I didn't even know that Hobby Craft did anything in the 32nd scale offerings. Great work on that! Jump in here with a kit man!

Bish: Great start. Huge? You should build a 1/24th scale 109. I've just received a 1/24th scale Trumpeter Fw109 D-9 and that thing is definitely big. Gotta wait a little bit on aftermarket stuff for that pig though. I spent a slew of bucks at the hobby shop in Austin.

Thanks Joe. Well, i do have a 24th Stuka, I know that will be massive. getting some AM for that, not sure when I will build it though.

Nice work JCon! I like it. You can go ahead and add the swatikas. Swastikas were mandated right up to the end of the war. You might see a late war 109, K-4 or G-10, with a partially or maybe even fully worn off swastika due to poor paint quality in the last days of the war. Mid-war G-6 would have them 100%.

Better late than never but yes that line is yellow and has two metal fittings a  clear viewing part.

Great job in your pit and at 1/72 scale that makes it even harder at least for me.

It's been a while since I posted any progress but got behind a bit with my BBQ grilling island I'm building (will post some pictures later) and more commissions to complete.

I need to get cranking on this G-6 since I just procured the new Trumpy 1/32 K-4 and what a freaking beauty, including a full engine.

I decided to open up and detail the shell ejection chutes on the belly so I was going to make the tiny boxes from plastic sheet but managed to find something similar in my spare box from a left over tank model.

I drilled out the squares

Then made the cutouts to accept the new parts

The small hollow boxes were Tenaxed in place

And the rest of the parts glued on giving the chutes a more dimensional look.  

The outer wing panels needed just a bit of Perfect Plastic Putty to get a better join along the top of the wing. I applied the putty, let it dry and used a wet paper towel to wipe away the excess with no sanding necessary.

This is where I'm at the moment and nearing my favorite part of the build, the painting stage. I need to add the tail feathers and do some masking.

Just looked at the completed builds on page 1. Great stuff, but I only counted 21 and there are over 50 signed up for. Don't want to rush anyone, but we are into the third quarter so hopefully everyone's builds are still coming along. I know the summer can be too busy to get much modelling done. I have been working on a WNW Fokker D VII. Nice kit for sure, but I am missing 109's. I think I will try to get one more in before the end of the GB. Trying to decide what I want do. I have most everything E-K so it will probably come down to finding a scheme I really like that's different. Keep up the great work guys!

I think there are a couple since my DB 605 that still need to be added. My second build is under way and I think we have a couple more as well. A few GB's lately have struggled to get 50% complete, so I think we are doing well. Mustang's GB's always attract a good crowd.

This is what has been kicking my butt and keeping me from the work bench. Between this Florida Summer heat and my bad back it just drains all the energy out of me.

I'm using the left over pool tiles for the counter top in diamond pattern. A ton of cuts but thank God to Harbor Freight's  small wet tile table saw.

And the stone work. Very time consuming as much as the counter tiles and not fun working at near or over 100 degree heat.

I usually have several (4-5) builds going on at the same time but I'm struggling with the almost completed F-20 and this G-6 which I'm getting close to the painting stage.

That's quite an ambitious project, Ernie. And in that heat, oh my, not for me.

But it's looking outstanding and you'll enjoy it when it's ready to go. Especially when it cools off a little.

I think I will go with the Hasegawa G-14/AS next. Mainly because I have the fuselage and wings 90% riveted already, but also because I have been really into the late war camo lately and I have four of these I picked up on a Sprue Bros super deal a few years ago and haven't built one yet. It uses the same fuselage as their G-10 so if I build it as a G-14/AS I will need to move the oil fill to the lower location, but I may build it as a G-10. It just depends on which scheme I find that I want to do. I will throw a bunch of AM at it. Don't know how quickly it will go as I still want to finish the D VII as well.

That's some snazzy-looking riviting, Jay. Curious what riviting tool you are using?

Greg, I use a beading tool to emboss them one at a time.
