Kyuzo

Also guys, I was having a thought yesterday. I was thinking about painting one of my remaining Mustangs in a p51 Mustang fighter scheme. So to all of you who are dabbling in the world war 2 fighter scene I am seeking advice in every aspect of that idea from colors to patterns to markings. As of the moment I kind of have a picture in my head.

I was at our local car show last fall and a guy that has a local body shop had painted his entry to look like a fighter. If you click on this link it will take you to his website to see it. I wish I had taken some pictures because his website does not do it justice. I am also with Steve, that a blue nose would look cool as well.

Here is Moonbeam so far. I added the decals and beginning the weathering. I still need to add some more oil wash and some pastels, but I wanted to put up an update.

I third that.  And thanx George &  Steve. Then a blue nose it is. I just hope I don't screw it up. Lol. Also something that made chuckle...every time I Google P-51s for images somewhere in the list of results the Black Shark comes up. I mean that thing, as awesome as it is, is in no way a P-51 lol.

Well last night I applied the salt masks. .I think its going to look ok .. (first-time for me ) .the field applyed invasion strips came out great ..aside from some areas that had spray through here an there..but all in all satisfied. .I'll go back once I finish up the salt clean up and camouflage.

P.s I asked my wife to give me a hand at posting pictures here today. .I've been filling up my photo bucket files  . I have alot to show

Here are a couple of 4 wheeled Mustangs that are painted like jets but not like P-51s:

Maybe these will inspire your next Mustang.

So, over on the Aircraft forum, Theuns started a topic about projects you wish you never started.  I'm beginning to feel like this is one of those projects...

All the assembly's done with Miss Marilyn.  When I posted last, she was just still waiting for her final fiddly bits and some more flat.

I was feeling pretty happy with the build considering what I was up against.  I had to go through 4 different insignias on the upper wing because none of them wanted to settle down properly.  (4!)  At one point I had to scrape one off, sand, re-prime, sand again, then paint.  This was after my screw up trying to fix the wonky landing gear.  One of which I manged to break off after my repair.  I had to make a dorsal antenna from stretched spure because I lost the kit part.  Of course, let's not forget having to repaint the OD camo and its red demarcation line.  Oh, and how the @#$% did all that dust get inside the cockpit?  And don't even get me started on the lazy paint and the fingerprints.

So, I was at the point of having everything together and being ready to remove the canopy and windscreen maskes.  Once I did, I had some issues with the masking lifting some of the paint along the clear parts.  I did my best to touch it up with a fine paint brush.

*sigh*

I'm ready to throw in the towel on this one.  If I choose not to fix the blemishes, I can call this one done.  I'm tempted to leave them and move on to the next project.

Here's where Miss Marilyn's at now:

So what do you think FSM?  Should I leave the nitpicky issues and move on to my next project and call this one a three-footer?  Or do I bust out the sanding pads, polish out the chips, and repaint?

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Cheers!

Steve & Omar -  Would you like these pics for your finished model?  I know Steve wants to add some figs and base and Omar you were thinking of changes?  No hurry,  I may be a tad slower,  middle of a move.  Nice thing is, its only about 1/2 mile away.  Every Model packed up...  Ill have to put a pic of all boxes, paint, uhgg...  I think I may be a hoarder....  seriously....

Omar-  As far as the fixes...  I know when I tend to try and fix blemishes, more times than not,  I wish I hadn't.  Those are so minor I dont think anyone would notice but the builder himself. Stick out tongue

Steve,

Moonbeam looks great. Excellent work, my friend.

O, I'd be tempted to invoke the "three foot rule." How often do you look at your models as close as you got in those shots you posted. You did good work and, taken as a whole, the model looks great.

Just my .02.

Steve, Moonbeam looks great! You have inspired me to do a 1/32 scale someday so I can tackle a display engine.

O, Miss Marilyn looks great! Having come this far, even with much frustration, I would be tempted to mask, sand, and spray the canopy aluminum since the glossy finishes show those little nicks easier. I know I am way too into looking at stuff under magnification rather than the 3 foot rule. Either way you will be happy after letting it sit and appreciate it for a few days.

My 2 cents.

O,

If those are your only issues I'd let them go. Battlefield planes were not perfect. Paint was patched and tons of wear. Even from the factory they had blemishes. The enemy was shooting at them, the weather was trying to deteriorate them, and the mechanics were beating on them. I'd let it go. But that's me. When I'm done with a build, it usually goes on the shelf and hardly gets looked at except for my grandson who doesn’t care and thinks it’s supposed to be that way anyway. Adds to the mystique to let him think I did it on purpose, besides, the more I fiddle with something, the better chance of messing it up even more.

 2 cents

Steve

Nice work dude. Personally I like it the way it is. I think sometimes a little blemishes can give a project more of a real world, actually used feel

The rims for my '66 GT-350H just got here. Gonna try to do black with a chrome lip

Have to bore them out to make them fit though. Sticking a number 11 surgical blade in the hole and turning it so it  shaves the plastic out seemed to do the trick.

Well O, in the past what I couldn't fix I used to incorporate into the weathering. =]  But as I got better I didn't want to leave things like that left alone.  If you feel you can mask and fix it, I say go for it.  You'll be glad you did.  But if you're likely to screw it up, then obviously leave it.  It's really not that noticeable. Yes

Steve, very nicely done!  I'll have a detailed mustang like that one day...just probably not any day soon. =P

These are the rims for the '97 Cobra. I don't know what brand they are these are just some wheels that I bought off of ebay and random. I don't know if you can tell in this picture but I decided to do some file work in between the spokes. In this picture the one on the left is one that I just finished filing and the one on the right still has a bit of webbing between the spokes. I think I'm going to paint these black with a lip to match the body. And that is the body in the background

I was looking for some decals from a blue nose p 51 to put on the side of the car. I'm looking for suggestions on what scale aircraft to find the decals from that would best be suited for 1/25 scale car size wise.  (car is the Revell muscle '06 Shelby GT-H)

Kyuzo, you're taking your build in a really different, creative direction. Can't wait to see how it comes out.

I started working on some modifications to the Tamiya wing on my build. I carved off the cast on guns and replaced them with nested tubing. I used 5 minute epoxy to hold them in place. I used ACC on some earlier models and I had one of the barrels break loose and disappear inside the model, never to reappear. That ain’t happening again.

I really like to drill out the formation lights on my Mustangs and insert 1/16" clear styrene rod to represent the lenses. I color them from the inside using Tamiya clear colors.

Ok, so this really isn’t a modification. I painted the rear surface of the center wheel well piece with yellow zinc chromate, masked that off and painted the rest of the well with Alclad Aluminum. Then I picked out some of the cast in detail with black, grimy black, and yellow. It still needs a little touch up here and there.

Thanks for looking,

Larry

Larry, you always go the extra mile to improve your builds. Great work, I love it. The rod for the formation lights is a really great idea.

I can't seem to get the salt method to work. I have AK Interactives worn effects, but you have to use it sparingly because it works so well.

Larry,

Looking good! That gun barrel modification is really genius! I will be borrowing that in the future. Thanks for sharing!
