1990-1991 Gulf War 25th Anniversary Group Build

Great build wayne, really like the finish, and a nice base as well.

I will hang on until later today and see if carlos can post a pic, if he is not ablke to i'll add one to the temp roster. Do you have a preferance.

A fine model, and the photography is REALLY good.

That's a great looking "target"...

DONE. i added some gray and brown pastels to the roas wheels and edge of skirts. the top was scrubbed with light gray pastel which toned down the starkness of the pin wash. added some exhaust and some rust on the external fuel drums for some color. the gray pastel is very subtle.

think i will try a Trumpter S-tank in a winter camo for something easy/ OR the Tiger AMX-10RCR.

got the holes filled for the lost front slope tow cable, external fuel drums on and added the plumbing and some fuel spill oil washes and the side skirts. ready to start the base and the powder/pastel weathering. i REALLY like the way the oil washes worked; good 00 and 000 brushes, q tips and 4 hours of patience. very relaxing. ha Russian Symphonies in the background. if i had been any more relaxed i would have fallen asleep. will post pics on Thuts.

And Wayne, your T-72 is looking outstandin now! Very sharp with the pin washes!

nice work Stik. Unlike you my scratchbuilding is involuntary.

the ongoing annoyance with my T-72 continues. Please note, other than the rubber band track, all other issues were my fault and not the kit.

got it washed aftre buying some nice new 000 brushes and trashing most of the ones in my oil wash box. now i can't find the front tow cable and it attaches to 2 holes in front. now the plan is to make the clamps and fill the holes and play with speaker wire to try to get a nice looking cable. should just buy one of my ship guys a 6 pack and use his rope walk for an afternoon and make 10 feet of 4 strand cable. i figure by the time i finish the cable and front clamps i will find the missing piece.

had to scratch build the HMG mount too. going to leave the track on since it is wired together in 2 places and have the tank slid off the trail with sand piled up a bit on the bad side.

skirts and fuel drums  are washed too, just haven't put them on yet. next step is making my own dust from pastels and scrubbing it in.

i found some French guys including a 3 man crew for my AMX-10RCR which is too late for this build.

Thank you SB. I will get it going eventually with the figures. right now I have a single surrendering Iraqi figure, but he is more of an Infantryman type. These guys would work good in combination with him.

Some great scratchbuilding there Stik, its looking nice.

I took several photos of my work a couple weeks back, but since PB was down that day I could not get them uploaded. Life intervened in the mean time so here is the scratch work I did for the drivers compartment, as well as the jerry can racks for the rear hull fenders

11B, very sweet work on the Abrams. Looks great paired up with the Bradley. I am extremely happy that you joined us for the GB. Especially with your personal connection to this war. 

Wayne, check out ADV/Azimut for some proper ODS French tanker figures. They made some resin ones awhile back in 1/35. I bet you can still find them. I do believe they use a helmet similar to our CVC helmets, and not berets for their tank crews.

As far as mine damage a tank hitting a anti- personal mine would probably just bust the track...anything bigger and its going to damage roadwheel, torsion bars, idler arms

 

i kinda thought that too but my tank days are a generation before yours with less "practical experience". should have time to work on it Sunday.

when we deployed to Saudi in Aug. '91, we moved out into the desert and lived off our vehicles...so we looked like Gypsies with all the stuff hanging off our vehicles

Thats not good news about those tracks wayne, thats one reason i don't use those tracks if i can help it. I agree, i don't think you had much choice in the wire you used.

 

2 things i have wanted to do, have a tank with a thrown track (of which i have experience) and take one of my warwheels trucks and roll it in a ditch so everyone can see the chassis. given i do bases anyway looks like one is a go.

question. if i hit a small mine, not an IED. would it break the track without serious damage to the no. 1 roadwheel or road wheel arm? i could pull the wheel off, cut off the road wheel arm, drill out the hole and pile the track up in front as the sprocket would still be turning. small crater and have it skewed across the path as the right track would still be turning. don't want to do a lot, or any real battle damage at this stage. 

just random thoughts at this point but this little "quick build" could turn into a diorama with a French AMX-30B2. since i haven't found a modern french crew set going to use a german one with berets instead of helmets. 

i like the spare road wheel still green. adds some color and makes sense. i thought we carried a bunch of stuff on our A2s but i guess not. we never had rucks though, just a duffel bad and bed roll.

Lovely work on that 11B, really nicely loaded out as well. And its nice to build somthing that you have a personal link to.

Weathering complete...this  build is done. I have really enjoyed this group build, the 1st I have participated in. The subject has special meaning for me as I lived it.
