Thanks, guys. I should have a photo of the first stages of construction up in a day or so. I like the old Hurricane kit, but keep hoping Airfix will add a metal-wing version to round out their recent fabric-wing offering.

Hi Wayne

The supplier for the decals I wanted to build my 1/72 Swedish Hawker Hunter J34 is out of stock, so I'll have to scratch it from this GB for now, so please delete my entry. I'll keep going with the Patrouille Swisse version though.

Cheers

Tony

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

Progress on Airfix Hurricane:

All this consists of only 11 pieces--pretty basic.  Harness was made from painted masking tape.

I didn't take any photos, but the seat has been installed, wings and canopy attached and ready for painting:  Dark Earth, Dark Green and Sky.  Probably take a day for each color to be applied and to dry.

Thanks, Duke. Yup, it's not too stressful, but there are places along the wing roots that take some filling and work. Otherwise, not a bad kit for it's age.

Thanks, Tony. Didn't accomplish anything today; went to see "SPECTRE," before it got displaced by "Star Wars."

Been working on the paint now, and have accomplished this much, at least.

The propeller.  Most profiles show the plane with a de Havilland spinner and prop, but a comment I read over at britmodeller called that into question, based on the serial number of the plane.  Since I didn't have an AM de Havilland prop, it was an easy excuse to use the kit's Rotol prop and spinner.

The kit wheels are a weak point in the kit, so I replaced them with after market wheels from S.B.S.  There's not much of a demarcation between the tires and the hubs, so it was a little tricky to paint.

I added a black pinwash around the struts to accentuate the shadows, a dark green wash into the hubs--and I did eventually dust away those little white particles on the tires.

Painting is finished up:  Colourcoats used throughout.

Sky, Type S undersurfaces.

Dark Earth/Dark Green uppers.

Added a pin wash around the raised rivets and panel lines, and some light dusting in the fabric-covered control surfaces with Doc O'Brien's weathering powders.

I had to source four decals sheets to get a semblence of accuracy for the markings.  This was RST's first Hurricane (previously he flew Spitfires), when he assumed command of 257 Squadron.

The decals that came with the BoB Experience offering.  The codes were white, which I don't think was accurate.  All I used from this one are the serial numbers, black walkways, and the Burma flag (which looked sharper and crisper than that on the other sheets).

A couple of decal sheets from Airfix's years-old boxing of RST's Hurricane--an aircraft he flew later in 1940 or '41.  I used the squadron codes from these, since they seem to be in the correct gray (grey?) colo(u)r; also the fuselage roundels, but not the little red circles for the center.  I did use the gun-tape decals as a pattern to cut new ones from some red decal stock.

A sheet from Propagteam.  I was going to use this sheet for the upper wing roundels, but the red center "mottled" when I applied it.  Don't think I've ever seen anything like it before; it looked terrible.  So I removed the wing decals, and replaced them with Xtradecals.  I ended up cutting the small red circle out of the fuselage roundels and applied it over the Airfix fuselage decals.  Also included on this sheet were a line of little white swastikas that RST had painted below the canopy on the port side.  Being white, they don't show up in the photo.  RST had fourteen victories when he took over 257 Squadron, so I only used that many, to reflect his early days as squadron CO.

A generic BoB RAF markings from Xtradecal.  I wanted to use the brighter red colours from this sheet.  All I needed were the upper wing roundels and the tail stripes.

From the profile in Osprey's Hurricane Aces book, I thought the tail markings with 12" stripes worked best.

One item not included in any of the sheets was a caricature of Winston Churchill, apparently painted below the victory swastikas on the port side.

It seems no photos of this particular aircraft exist, so who knows where the profilers and decal makers came up with all this!?  With the exception of little Winston, I think I got it looking pretty close to published illustrations.

Thanks for hosting the GB, Wayne.  I appreciate the opportunity to build still another Hurricane from the BoB.

Here's my finished project, the Hawker Hurricane Mk I, piloted by Robert Standord-Tuck

when he took command of 257 Squadron on 11 September, 1941:

nice Hurricane. if anyone is still working on builds add them. i will probably do another OTS later in the year though i will be preparing to teach a continuing learning class on THE GREAT PATRIOTIC WAR. eight 2 hr classes. a lot to learn and a lot to condense.

i just stumbled across moddel collect and they have a bunch of cool MAZ vehicles and a HEMMT PERSHING. plus i have some JGSDF stuff in the queue

got lost parts for airbrush and back in the game. i got the atomic cannon basecoated. here are pics of the tractors. i thought i had put the wrong backs on the wrong fronts for the tires, figured out how to moubnt them, then realized i was correct the first time. the gun is together and clamped. Dragon doesn't have the largest mounting pins and it is annoying. i think i will CYA some braces on the underside of the carraige. as this will be on a base on a rutted road no one will know. i won't weather this one muchj, just some road grime and a bit of dust. though i may do a lighter uper surfaces overspray.

Looking good Wayne! Did I post pics of my Atomic Annie here or not? I finished her some months ago. I even had a comparison pics showing her next to Dora. What a contrast! I also finished up the Tiger Models M1A2 Abrams SEP TUSK II as well as Dragon's M-103 recently. I built a couple of those Modelcollect tanks; one even won at the Columbus Nationals: my TOS I. They are great models that are fun to build and have exceptional detail! I want to get one of those MAZ transporters, the HEMMTT Pershing, and the SMERCH as well. Trying to save up for them now. Let me know if you want to see any of these models I mentioned, I'll post them here for you to see. I don't have a dedicated Thread posting my work anymore because it always falls to the third page by the next day due to people not looking at it.

Keep plugging on that model; she's looking good!

hey Duke post them here. i have a 1/35 Tiger Models French AMX-30RCR 6x6 and it looks nice.

checked on the gun carraige. had to reglue this time with CYA the left front and clamp it but the rest held fine. not a surprise given i wasn't using CYA and gluing over paint. need to repaint the barrel, touch up the cabs, and start decals. i always pit the mirrors and stuff on last and brush paint last even in 1/35.

Yeah, I always add the rear view mirrors and such last as well. Keeps them on the model longer.

Okay, here's some of the pics I offered to post...

Tiger Models 1/72 scale M1A2 Abrams SEP TUSK II:

M1A2 Abrams SEP TUSK II

Dragon 1/72 scale M-103A1 Heavy tank:

M-103A1 Heavy Tank

Dragon M-65 Atomic Cannon "Atomic Annie":

1/72 scale Annie next to 1/72 scale Hobby Boss Dora, size comparison:

Annie and Dora I

Annie and Dora II

Quite a contrast eh?

I apologize for the poor quality of Annie's pics. I'm going to try and get better ones soon.

Enjoy!

Interesting. I'm not quite sure what you're referring to.

I always like to consider the 'punch' these two have, maybe that's one thing you mean.

Thanks for the reply MC!

Yep, such a difference in caliber and explosive force.

Indeed! Some time back a friend of mine who is also a wargamer thought up a unique "what if?" scenario: a duel between Dora and Annie. The premise was that late in the War, Dora was giving the Allies fits, so the Atomic Cannon was brought to Europe to counter her. Annie's crew woiuld have to try and find Dora, while Dora had to determine where Annie was and hit her before she could fire. Naturally there were a ton of circumstances and advances and such that would have kept such a showdown from happening; not to mention the actual history that happened, but it was funny and a lot of fun thinking about and speculating on such a gun duel between these two powerhouses. LOL!

Okay, back to the subject at hand. Come on Wayne, show us more of your Annie my friend!

I'm still into wargaming myself; that's why I still attend my Hobby Days and have a member ship in the St. Crispin's Irregulars. The game never got to the playing stage; we were discussing how we could implement such a thing. We sat and tried to figure out blast radius', blast effects etc. It was quite difficult given the size and effects of each cannon's explosive power, not to mention the added effects of a nuclear blast and how we would translate that into dice rolls. The game never got off the ground. Sorry.

The game never got off the ground. Sorry.

That’s too bad, it sounds like it would have been a cool scenario.

i was a huge board wargamer and then computer wargamer from mid 60s thru 2005. kinda backed off when some but getting back into it. a friend and i may start doing portfolio beer and pretzel games.

i am slotted to teach an 8 class, 2 hours ea once a week course on THE GREAT PATRIOTIC WAR (GDW) and am working on a way to incorporate the game into the class. not playing in class but use the maops and units. i think i like it better than THE RUSSIAN CAMPAIGN. it's a lot to cover and will be my first OLLI facillitator class.

when i play now (computer games) it's STEEL PANTHERS 1 and 2, TOAW 3, some old HARPOON and maybe some CIV 4.would like to get COMMAND (modern naval) but can't justify the cost vs how much i would likely play. if i where back in 1995 i would have already bought it.

I remember Harpoon. I played the dickens out of it when I was on isolated duty in Alaska. Loved all the Civ games. My fav was Pacific War, but they never updated the game after Vista so no go now Crying. That's OK, it would suck all my spair time and tick off my wife.

Is a OTS 2016 in the works?

You guys should check out Slitherine/Matrix Games, there is a renaissance in computer wargaming... I sunk too many hours into Panzer Corps last couple years..

I've heard of many of those games. I'm not good at those types of online games; I tend tto die way too quickly and don't have the time I need to practice well enough to last long enough to enjoy it. Still, they are great games with some stunning graphics that are fun to watch!

My games I enjoy the most are the tabletop wargames we play on tables at St. Crispin's Hobby Day when I'm not building a model or six.

Wayne, I'm watching for OTS 2016 as well.

Duke  These aren't online games. Matrix is the new source for computer games, new ones and updated old ones. try STEEL PANTHERS. it's PANZERBLITZ and SQUAD LEADER with all the computer enhancements like hidden troops. individual tanks and squads. looks like the board games a bit too. easy to get into and gain experience at your own rate. on a bad day you can buy a bunch of Katyushas and turn hill 222 into hill 122.

counting me that's 3 for a new OTS already. i have a Revell BdW MAN 6x6 i want to do as a blue THW vehicle, some interesting stuff on ModelCollect and HobbyTerra, maybe a new train. let me get caught up on some stuff and i may start it earlier than planned.

and, of course, there is always DORA

Duke - As Wayne said, these games are basically hexed-based tabletop wargames in computer format. Panzer Corps is a good entry level game without complex ressuply and logistics rules, etc like Tiller's or Grisby's games. I also just got Memoir 44, tabletop wargame. Easy to learn, hard to master, amenable to solo play.

Anyways, I am in if there is a OTS 16  :) Cheers
